Hi all! Got two recommendation requests, but I'll keep 'em short and sweet so as not to clog it up!

-Dark, atmospheric black metal with high use of chanting and a huge, cavernous sound a la Batushka and Deathspell Omega

-Crusty, angry (maybe even political?!) black metal a la Iskra

Thanks in advance all!

I'm a sucker for black metal that radiates a solitary, midnight feeling. Early Forgotten Woods - As The Wolves Gather or Nehemah - Light Of A Dead Star are good examples.

I consider Dimmu Borgir's breakthrough album "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" as a good example of easy listening black metal.

Mainly because of the striking, crystal clear production by studio wizard Peter Tägtgren.

I suppose an apt description would be Bergtatt, but with synth and clean electric guitar interludes instead of acoustic/folky ones. Blut aus Nord's Ultima Thulee also isn't too far off the mark.

Guitar solos and varied vocals would be a plus, but aren't necessary.

For the record, I am definitely not looking for anything blackgaze.

Fingers crossed.

This is oddly specific and a bit difficult, most raw melodic bm has folky acoustic interludes it seems. Perhaps Sorcier Des Glaces on Snowland? Theres really not too many breaks there though. Maybe upload one of that French band's songs on Youtube. I am curious to hear at any rate.

Battle Dagorath did this a couple of times on Cursed Storm of Ages. Big atmospheric breaks in the middle of long songs with keys done by Vinterriket.

Thanks for the recommendation. I really enjoyed the album. It's got a similar vibe to Ultima Thulee to my ears. I've also uploaded a song from the Landvaettir EP. I've never uploaded anything to YouTube before, so hopefully it works.

This description definitely whets my appetite. I haven't listened to these recommendations yet, but will give them a go right now. Thank you.

edit: I'm digging both of these songs. All of the recommendations are a bit more icy than what I had in mind, but they definitely satisfy my craving. The funny thing is I had albums from both of these bands in my Spotify playlist, but never got around to listening to them. Thanks again to both of you.

I came here to recommend Drautrans Unter dem Banner der Northwind demo but it is quite 'icy' as well. Iciness and folkiness are both intractable parts of most melodic BM it seems.

Here is some Drautran songs:

I'm looking for primitive mid-tempo black metal in the vein of the almighty blodulv, it just needs to have good riffs. programmed drums are no hindrance, as you may guess. the first song on blodulv's II gives you a good impression of what I'm looking for:

I just got done listening to Midnartiis's new album With Reverence and Will...

Seems pretty similar to what you are looking for

Man I fucking love(d) Blodulv, the song you're referring to, "Desolate" always one of my favorites along with "Dreadnought" from the split with Aska. I have never really been able to find anything quite like it, but just the other day I started listening to This: https://deathkvltproductions.bandcamp.com/album/forgotten-by-time... Listening to the first song as I'm writing this just to make sure and it definitely sounds very Blodulvish. I'm in a total raw and or winter metal mood at the moment and I'm currently searching for more stuff like this myself. If anyone else as anymore or if I find anything I'll post again.

Edit: Dreadnought is really hard to find online, I can only find it on youtube in the full split, it starts just after 15 minutes if anyone is curious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1bcPqU2x4w

well there's odelegger, the bilskirnir guy's tribute to ildjarn. both full-lengths are good, the first has some better single songs, but also some filler, while the second is more consistent in terms of quality, but doesn't have these outstanding songs. I like their demos best, however. especially the advance tracks.

also, myself from belgium, which is basically the guy behind antihumanism records. at some point I had almost all his stuff, but in the end got rid of everything except the "me, me, me..." tape, which I still think is great. caveat: very mysoginistic project.

then there's haat from NL, which I'm sure you know, and also gandr from finland.

odelegger is certainly the best out of those I mentioned. I'm sure you are aware that none of these come close to the grandeur of ildjarn, even if they may be good in their own right.

edit: I bet you know sort vokter, even it's *different* from ildjarn.

I know you are well versed in black metal so excuse me in advance if you already know these - or if way off the mark, but I'll rec a couple anyway...

Har Shatan. Just one of the many amazing German underground BM acts out there, who deliver no frills, raw and powerful BM in my opinion.

Through the Eyes of the Night

Pain and Misery

Ein Ritus der ekstatischen Befreiung

Caverne. I only have their second demo (need to get the vinyl reissues...), but it's a quality slab of mid tempo, rawness (maybe not what you're looking for though).

Ni le Lieu, ni l'Heure

Okay, this last one might be waaaaay off base, but I'm going to not just recommend this to you, but to everyone who likes quality raw black metal in it's finest, purest form.

Abkehr - In Asche. I only discovered this fucking amazing EP early this year, but bloody hell is this ever good. Bleak, raw harrowing BM. Just perfect.

Abkehr - In Asche

Honestly it's just so fucking good.

thank you guys for the blodulv soundalike recs. keep 'em coming if you have more up your sleeves.

midnartiis wasn't really up my alley, like all naturmacht releases, it seems, but thanks anyway.
I liked that norns track and will delve into the band a bit deeper for sure.
thanks in particular for the thy dying light rec, that was killer and in fact exactly what I was looking for. great shit.
will also check out your picks, CrushedRevelation, but right now I don't have enough time at hand.

@CrushedRevelation I just noticed I have that Abkehr album in my collection but it got buried, sounds quite good :)
Har Shatan sounds great, funny name, but that's fine, inactive for almost a decade though. Caverne and Necropole are 2 I've listened to before and hope they have some new material soon.

@into_the_pit Glad you liked Thy Dying Light I've been listening to that quite a bit lately.

I feel like these bands I just started checking out in the past couple days may be Blodulv like, or at least just really good riffy/raw black metal! Most of these labels have some great unknown bands to be discovered if you do a bit of browsing through their discographies. I'm just going to drop some BC links cause I'm supposed to be working.

Thromos - I am really loving this band and there's 3 more albums after this one, I just listened to the ones on BC so far and I <3
https://waragainstyourself.bandcamp.com/album/dematerialisation
Mavorim - More German black metal that just bleeds sounds of victory and power, excellent 1 man band I look forward to more releases. Check the new EP as well, it's only 2 actual songs, but so good.
https://mavorim.bandcamp.com/album/heimkehr
Wald Krypta - Found these guys at the last second, very primitive, kvlt production.
https://eternaldeath.bandcamp.com/album/pandemic-winds
Scythewarden - Like a faster Darkthrone that never left the UaFM era, but I wouldn't call it a copycat, it just simply shreds.
https://scythewarden.bandcamp.com/releases
Black Vice Just listening for first time right now, probably the most raw of the bunch.
https://blackvice.bandcamp.com/album/rituals-of-the-anti-cosmic-doctrine

Still looking for more like these.

Edited: I realized nothing sounds as "shitty" as Ildjarn ;) Also if anyone feels like looking through my BC collection and out of control wishlist, I'm sure there's some great stuff in there.

So I've been spinning Sigh's Scorn Defeat lately and I couldn't help but think of Sabbat's The Dwelling (which I realize got released a few years later) when I heard it. Both albums have plenty of ''atmospheric'' sections with keyboards and all popping up, making them sound rather theatrical.

Also I've been digging Root's The Temple in the Underworld lately which is absolutely fantastic. Those big riffs and unique vocals mix together very well. I suppose the best way to go from here is to just go chronologically?

Kargeras, The Book, and Black Seal pretty much represent more and more fleshed-out versions of a similar creative vein; a little more experimental and grandiose, certainly much less raw, but well worth a listen - there's no other band which sounds quite like it. "The Book" would be my personal recommendation out of the three.

Well Ildjarn was a farce to begin with so it's appropriate.

So about Root, anyone have any strong opinions on Return from Oblivion? Kinda weird seeing it have no reviews. The only track I've really heard a lot of myself was the slow epic "Moment of Fright".

Spend some quality time with Hardangervidda before you say that.

Actually I have to say that I held the same opinion for quite a while, then I figured out Forest Poetry, I realized I was listening to it in the wrong way. It is to be absorbed as an album, individual tracks and riffs are for the most part meaningless. Forest Poetry is like a play in which each song is like an act or scene and the beauty of it is in how the tracks flow together into a sort of narrative.

Okay, let me rephrase. Ildjarn can't make anything worthwhile without Nidhogg's help.

Agreed. Even then, they aren't essential or top shelf by any stretch. I used to just link people to a punk forum when they asked for Ildjarn recs.

Anyway, try Bone Awl, Ildjarn fans.

Howdy!

Is there something similar to Nocte Obducta (exact blend of technique and blackish atmosphere) but with english sung songs and lyrics?

You could try Nidingr - The High Heat Licks Against Heaven

So, since I'm in a black metal mood again I've been looking up plenty of black metal bands that could be up my alley. The problem is that I'm not really a fan of the usual second wave sound. I enjoy some first wave sounding bands such as Hellhammer, Poison, Vulcano, early Sepultura but I guess I'm mostly a fan of more midpaced 90's stuff that's a bit on the unorthodox side and I'd like to discover more bands in that area. I enjoy Rotting Christ's Thy Mighty Contract, Sabbat's The Dwelling, Sigh's Scorn Defeat, Root's The Temple in the Underworld and Mystifier's The World Is So Good That Who Made It Doesn't Live Here.

I've already tried: The Norwegian stuff, although I do like Darkthrone's A Blaze in the Northern Sky. The Swedish melodic black bands. The big names of the Greek scene. Aside from Rotting Christ it's not really my thing. Also not a fan of certain more familiar bands that I've heard of such as Mortuary Drape, Master's Hammer (and plenty of other early 90's Czech black metal bands), Barathrum, Cultes des Ghouls Negative Plane, Samael and Absu.

I hope I've made it clear what I'm sort of looking for. I don't like being very picky, either!

Shot in the dark: do you know Malokarpatan's album Nordkarpatenland? It sounds like an unorthodox early 90's album, but at the same time it's quite original and refreshing.
I really like it, you may try it! :)

Also not a fan of certain more familiar bands that I've heard of such as Mortuary Drape, Master's Hammer (and plenty of other early 90's Czech black metal bands), Barathrum, Cultes des Ghouls Negative Plane, Samael and Absu.
