I'm normally really skeptical about harsh vocals in trad metal, but that song is rock solid. Might have to check out the rest of the album.

It's a very simple, back to basics song, but that riff just hits you in the gut over and over and the harsh vocals are pretty natural and Motorhead/Venom-ish rather than anything too crazy. It really works.

For those of us who, ehh...sail the high seas...there is a certain collection out there called "Melodic Metal Anthems Vol. 1-48." You might think it'd be a fun idea to check it out in order to sample some new bands. You might think such a wide variety of heavy/power metal artists might end up giving you some new acts to keep track of. You may even hope that you'll be pleasantly surprised by a band you'd long ago written off for no discernible reason only to find you kinda enjoy them actually. And you might...maybe...if your ears don't set fire to themselves in the process.

Jesus fuckin' Christ, that was a mistake. I almost started to hate metal for a moment there until I switched back to my usual playlist and order was restored. Goddamn.

I am looking for bands that sounds like Racer X- Street Lethal, M.A.R.S.- Project: Driver, and Liege Lord-Master Control

Neo-classical shred metal with proficient high pitch vocals and a distinct 80's vibe.

Oh man .... I am a HUGE Racer X fan.

I went back and looked at what Paolo Gilberto said he was listening to while writing SL. He said: Accept - Restless and Wild and Loudness - Disillusion.

Now, the Accept isn't at all what you're looking for but that Loudness album is right on. In fact, most of their albums would probably fit the bill but I think "Disillusion" is a great place to start.

Maybe also Impelliteri? I'd start with the first EP.

Of course, the two first Yngwie albums are brilliant and essential for shred lovers.

Also, Jeff Martin has a new band that is a bit similar to old Racer X called Blasted to Static. I'd check them out if I were you.

A lot of people love Cacophony but I never thought their songs were worth listening to.

The first Nitro album "O.F.R." is fun and shred-tastic too.

Maybe the first few Vicious Rumors albums too.

Seconding Vicious Rumors and I would include A Distant Thunder/Nosferatu too. Classic US Power Metal really with great shredding, the vocals aren't really high pitched like in Racer-X but they are great anyway. Of course Malmsteen is the god of neo-classical shred and should be the first stop. But I would make it the first 4 albums at least. Trilogy, esp. the Suite Op.5 is THE neo-classical shredding manifesto that marks ground zero for european power metal in my opinion (half of Stratovarius' career right there). But Odyssey might also be the most complete Malmsteen album. Fucking great, definitely underrated compared to the first two.

Impelliteri who's #1 inspiration is Malmsteen is also a good recommendation. Haven't really studied his discography though. I would add Michael Angelo Battio to that mix. Howeverm personally I consider both Malmsteen and Gilbert much more inspiring and inspired players. YMMV.

Also adding Denmark's Narita:

Neo-classical power that looks more to the US than Europe. It's more straightforward than their next two, which go more on a prog/power direction (with a different singer too that I don't like as much as the original, who died in 2013 btw)

Cacophony (Speed metal Symphony particularly) is great. Their songs (with vocals that is) are not that great imo. But Speed Metal Symphony or Concerto are classics to me. Magnificent. Jason Becker is my fave shredder though and Marty Friedman too...

Hello everyone,
I'm looking for some power metal that is lightning fast and dripping with melted cheese. The more symphonic, orchestral, techno/electronic nonsense the better! The closest thing I can think off the top of my head are Pathfinder and Twilight Force, but I haven't heard a whole lot of power metal so feel free to recommend the obvious.

EDIT: Also off topic, is there any way to delete crappy reviews I made like 10 years ago?

Thank you much Zelkiiro!

First off...
Victorius - Dinosaur Warfare....greatest album cover ever lol. Reminds me of the old cartoon Extreme Dinosaurs!
Hmmm, although Stratovarius - Infinite Dolphins is pretty awesome too...

Plenty of cool bands there that I'll be delving further into, a couple very similar to Pathfinder which I enjoy.
I meant to say in my OP though, whatever bands you are thinking of...no, faster!

Opus,
Yes! I've heard Fairyland, Dragonland was fun too.

I'm gonna try not to repeat anything Zelkiiro already said. That'll be hard since he mentioned most of the good ones.

You do know of Rhapsody, right? I just want to make sure.

Versailles is of acquired taste but they're great. The guitarists and drummer are especially talented.

Also I just learned of 矢島舞依 (Yajima Mai). Lightning fast symphonic power with an incredibly talented female vocalist.

Cross Vein is similar but slower, and I like the above more.

Maybe Magic Kingdom? Shitty music video aside, the song ends up getting pretty fast and Rhapsody-like. I haven't listened to them enough to really say whether or not they're what you're looking for.

Hope we aren't overwhelming you! We probably are though.

You should try late-era Riot in your life. They didn't begin with lots of double harmonies but then they just locked into them (especially since Mike Flyntz got in the band) and it's now one of their trademarks and a joy to watch live.

Try the last two albums (Immortal Soul and Unleash the Fire), very catchy, lots of classic metal styles, ranging from hard rocking metal to insanely fast speed/power and always with hooks. Some cheese here and there (ok, sometimes a lot of it) but always in good taste.

"Immortal Soul" is excellent but "Unleash the Fire" is not. The former has great song writing the latter only has a generic singer with a lot of chops and many forgettable riffs.

So I've been listening to a bit more USPM again lately. I noticed that while Visigoth and Eternal champion have gotten quite a bit of attention there hasn't been really much stuff in the style of Destiny's End or Pharaoh the last couple years unless I've missed something of course.

Dark Forest! Especially the album The Awakening, loads of leads and twin guitars.
Here's one of the best songs ever:

Not sure if I'm too late on this, but one band that popped into my head was Axel Rudi Pell. The band started in the late 80's and still sounds of that era much of the time, Axel can and does shred, and while their vocalists haven't been terribly high-pitched, one of them was Rob Rock from Driver, so you should be content. As for a particular album, ARP tends to pump out a lot of the same style, so I think, "preferences," would boil down to little subjective things. If you like any of it, odds are you should enjoy most of it.

Eh, I have to agree that post-Reale Riot just sounds...fake...to me. And really, Immortal Soul had three or four monster tracks, but it hasn't held up as well as I'd like.

Unleash the Fire does almost nothing for me. It doesn't really sounds like Riot, to my ears. There's lots of blatant nostalgia-baiting, but it doesn't really work. I heard the sample track from their newest album, and it's really no different - I guess they get credit for energy, but the thing is just boring.

On the other hand been listening to a lot of mid-period Riot recently, and honestly I think there three albums from Nightbreaker through Inishmore are totally underrated. Stellar guitar work, monster hooks, great riffs - it's not as frenzied as the two Moore albums, but the dialed-down pace (and, at some points, lessened emphasis on riffs) is smoothly replaced by a more Deep Purple-ish sensibility and really I can't say that it's any worse. Oh, and the Gary Moore cover is fucking great.

Any of you guys know of a US-based store selling Chevalier's "A Call to Arms" ? I finally checked this out and it's a must-have. Very much in the same line as Legionnaire and Lord Fist. There's something special bubbling up in Finland.

Man, this sounds like a spiritual successor to Borrowed Time. Obvious comparison with JP on vocals, but the songwriting reminds me a lot of them too.

Fuuuuuck that most recent Night Viper album goes like hell! Really really impressed. It reminds me of the Crimson Storm EP in a lot of ways. Street-wise speed/heavy metal with some real passion behind it.

Anything with JP on vocals that isn't doom, I'm probably going to just buy on-sight tbh.

Empyreal, have you heard all the Saxon albums from 1997 onwards? If not, I'd suggest checking more of them out. Unleash the Beast, Killing Ground and Lionheart are perhaps my favourites from that era (all matching, perhaps beating Sacrifice in quality). I still need to get the newest... I'm sure it's good.

I've heard Lionheart and that's definitely really good. Haven't heard the 90s ones. I'll have to try them eventually. I feel like I've heard a fair few of their albums all over their career, but they've got a lot of em even so.

Denim & Leather is easily my favorite old one I've heard too... that always had such a unique character to it and I have fond memories of blaring it on a road trip years back.

My dad had this cassette called Soft Metal, ain't heavy, with a flower on it, and it had Saxon's Ride Like the Wind on it; I never bothered to listen to Saxon after that. Are all of Saxon's later songs like that?

Yeah Emp, definitely give those albums from '97 and onwards a spin. That's when they decided to become a straight up metal band.

For Saxon I've really been getting into Destiny and Innocence Is No Excuse lately. They're super polished arena cheese but god damn they have some great hook and Biff's vocals get really good at that point in his career. I love the Christopher Cross cover. It's great to hear hard rock by bands that actually fucking rock hard. I can't really decide which album is my favourite overall.

And yeah JP took a bus to Calgary for like 4 or 5 days to record with Matt Ries (guitarist from Gatekrashor and Hrom) for that Traveller demo, it sounds pretty sweet considering he basically wrote and recorded everything in a handful of days. I didn't even know he was doing it, I thought he was going back to the USA to visit family haha

We're premiering the new Gatekeeper video tomorrow on Deaf Forever's website, I'll post the link when it's up if you guys want another fix of new JP sangin'.

Oh man, that Traveler demo rules. That opening riff in Mindless Maze is an absolute killer!

You can't just throw a bone like that and leave us without any more information about that Soft Metal tape :D what's there beside Ride Like the Wind?
