Excuse me for not understanding but why are these terms necessary? Just about everytime I see them used there being used to say something along the lines of "I only listen to trve black metal" making the user sound like some sort of elitist or as a way of saying my black metal is better then your black metal. I've personally only ever used them in a joking context but Im more so wondering who came up with these words and why we need to use them to make our music seem better then the next black metal listener.

Because black metal is full of elitists, and people continually trying to be more underground and evil than each other?

A tongue in cheek response, but honestly, I don't think anybody uses it in a serious sense except the idiots I make fun of above.

It's all sarcasm and ridiculousness. Basically taking the piss out of people who take black metal insanely serious. If you ever were on the fmp forum when it was active you'd know all too well what it was about. Some other favorites "i want to 7" ep" and "darker than beherit".

Well at first it was a reference to the Roman and Medieval ways of using the "V" shape as a "U" in stone etchings, theological tracts and all that jazz. So, I think it was supposed to connote the seriousness of the music itself - completely serious and intense.

However it later became parody - as the two gentlemen above me said.

Oh boy.

And to answer your question OP, these terms are not necessary at all.

Its something that people use as a strawman argument whenever anybody doesn't like a more mainstream oriented metal album. "You don't like Whitechapel? You must just be another trve kvlt kiddie elitist".

It's a juvenile urination contest, nothing more, nothing less.
