The father of the 2nd wave BM riff and enigma behind Thorns. A figure so central to the Norwegian BM story that perhaps only Euronymous himself casts a longer shadow over it.

What happened to this guy? Does anyone have any news on what he might be up to or if he ever intends on releasing new music?

I currently can't remember what he does for a living right now, but I know he has gotten very interested in electro-acoustic music. He's composed several electro-acoustic pieces for art installations and such.

I heard rumors of a second Thorns album a few years ago but it never happened.

Love his guitar work. Ærie Descent is one of my favorite songs of all time. I heard he helped write the Satyricon album "The Age Of Nero", not sure if he played on it or anything though.

They look like they're about to play a cover of Sultans of Swing.

A year or two ago I chanced upon a forum post at the bottom of this page here describing the current Thorns situation...so apparently the album is being mixed now? Who knows...scroll to the bottom: http://www.nwnprod.com/forum/viewtopic. ... sc&start=0

It seems like Snorre works for this place at the moment http://www.histproject.no/node/74

Yes he also helped write The Age of Nero and played additional guitars on it, as he did with Rebel Extravaganza (which by the way I think is an amazing album).

Hes in that noise/ambient project with the current bassist of Thorns (called Thorns Ltd) but it doesn't seem they've released anything or done any art-gallery stuff or otherwise of late.

Given how great and unique that album was, i wouldn't mind too much if he doesn't do anything Thorns-like again.

From a recent interview with Attila Csihar:

Blabbermouth wrote:
Q: Current MAYHEM guitar player is Telloch, formerly of 1349 and GORGOROTH, among others. However, at some point, there were rumours that you asked Snorre Ruch of THORNS to work with you. Were those rumours true? Did you really ask Snorre? Or is there no truth in it at all?

Attila: Without a shadow of doubt, Snorre is an old friend of ours. And our fan through the years. It was one of the ideas, because he was involved before. I will probably ask his opinion about the album. [laughs] But it's not really decided and it's not looking like he will be involved. Snorre is living up North with his family, so I don't think he would like to join any band and go on tour, as far as I understand. He composes his own music, has his own visions. But we are always in contact.

According to Aldrahn the 2nd Thorns album has been in the works very slowly cause both live currently too far. It'll have Aldrahn doing all vocals and hellhammer should reprise his role. I remember an interview where aldrahn said he already heard some of the new material and it was something beyond any expectations, better in every aspect. While I worship Snorre's works, i hold no hope for that follow up album.

Man, Thorns have a drummer. Hellhammer will not be playing on the 2nd album.

It's a hell of a thing participating in killing a man. You take away everything he's got, and all he's ever going to have.

Did he participate, though? I heard he was simply hanging with Varg when they went up there and wasn't suspecting anything. The only thing he is guilty of, to my knowledge, is fleeing the scene of a crime. Though it could be cover-up bullshit. Euronymous' murder is just sketchy through and through.

He was charged as an accomplice. This is old old old stuff that doesn't need to be discussed again. There is more than enough material available for you to read or watch about this subject.

Varg talks a lot about the murder and being in prison, but did Snorre ever talk about it? For all his importance to the norwegian bm sound, he sure isn't a "scene person", one that seems to avoid the spotlight.

I don't think he can recreate what he did in his heyday.

Totally. He didn't even ask for credits on De Mysteriis despite have written quite a lot of the music on it. He finished Dead's lyrics as well.

I don't think he would want to.

It'll be interesting to see how the band will cope with the loss of Rune. Attila is a man of great ideas, but also an artist super dependent on a solid opposite. He had that in Rune, and earlier in Snorre and Euronymous. Will he have that in Teloch? I have my doubts.

That's because he's not just an attention whore like 99% of the black metal scene since then. And that's also why he'd never want to repeat himself anyways, he's not the same person as he was then. He shouldn't try to recreate that early sound anyways.

So, 2014 was quite productive in terms of Snorre Ruch news. In a nutshell, we had Aldrahn's facebook post saying:

23/09/2013 - Aldrahn: "The Deathtrip album is off to mastering theese days, and Thorns will be NeXT runner up.''

And of course the Satyricon show in March, which was discussed here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=103807&hilit=snorre+snorre+ruch
A member of the archives named juicebitch got to chat with him after the concert and this is what he posted:
Quote:
As a bonus, I managed to grab a photo with the man and had a brief chat after the gig.
Very friendly but shy, speaking excellent English. There seemed to be quite a lot of people who wanted to talk to him. Regarding the 2nd Thorns album, he said the files were lost due to a hard drive failure but he had managed to find studio backups and that it will be out in "perhaps a couple of years" - though he also mentioned that the album was complete, but if so, why would it take a couple of years to release? He also mentioned plans on doing proper Thorns shows with his full lineup in future. So I guess you could say the gig with Satyricon is the beginning of a revival? Watch this space...

What is more, in late March a Thorns facebook page surfaced, which seems rather official as it includes many photos of Snorre etc. https://www.facebook.com/Thornspage/photos_stream

Lastly, and the most exciting news so far is that Snorre will be mixing the new Deathtrip album called ‘Deep Drone Master’, scheduled for release through Svart Records this coming September. Here is the press release:
Quote:
Where mortality becomes a frozen pyre"!

The cosmic voice of Aldrahn from Dødheimsgard and Zyklon B has been set free to echo once again!
Those riffs! That voice! A frozen chill we have all been missing!
Early 90s-era cold Norwegian style minimalist black metal mixed and brought back from the dead by scene originator Snorre Ruch, from the legendary Thorns.

Take a Lynchian nightmare journey through bleak landscapes via abysmally grim interior reflection. Philosophical brooding and animalistic roars over discordant, jarring, familiar riffs of Celtic Frost/Bathory stature where notes bend evermore into deeper caverns. In light of the current state of black metal, it's refreshingly dark to hear the real thing again, served up by titans of the old scene.

Cauldrons full of foggy riffs, ritualistically stirred with an unhealthy dose of modern paranoia, and monstrously bizarre, spirited vocals. All of the tormented, surreal and enlightening lyrics we have come to expect and love from the founder of Dødheimsgard and more. The man whose voice made Kronet Til Konge, Monumental Possession, Satanic Art and 666 International so game-changing, enigmatic and unforgettable is a gigantic vocal presence here. A brilliantly defined and realised masterpiece that's missing from your shelf of beloved and most treasured records.

A brand new ancient and antique classic. File under "True Black Metal".

The origins of The Deathtrip began around 2003 with UK-based guitarist Host’s early compositions evoking a feeling beyond what was generally circulating in the scene at the time - namely, a propensity for technicality and overly convoluted composition over atmosphere. Initial recordings consisted of distinctive riffing on top of intentionally stripped down, monotonous drums, combined with a raw-as-can-be ‘production’. The aim was for something hypnotic & primitive through repetitive structure. Upon hearing, Aldrahn (DHG/Thorns) instantly felt a wish to become part of the beast - the essence of the music itself being an extension of his early work with Dødheimsgard - & so took on vocal duties, as well as becoming chief lyricist. This resulted in what became the rare cassette release ‘Demo 08’. Songs were sent around to a few close associates, including Snorre Ruch of Thorns who, having been impressed by the tracks, expressed a great interest in helping to develop a full-length album with the band and becoming a part of The Deathtrip’s machinery.

The full album debut, long ago established to be titled ‘Deep Drone Master’ was finally recorded, re-recorded & mixed across a span of several years. With a lyrical exploration of twisted darkness & death truly befitting of the band’s moniker, mixed with the supreme vocal delivery of Aldrahn, ‘Deep Drone Master’ looks to tread new territory in the black metal genre. The recording line-up was completed by Storm on drums and Jon Wesseltoft on bass.

“As The Deathtrip is the most interesting and the best black metal I've come across in many many years it was an honour to be asked to mix their debut album”.
-Snorre Ruch

So, if Aldrahn's saying is still valid then one can hope that the second Thorns is coming up next. I really wish this has some kind of truth in it but in the meantime, I am very excited about the new Deathtrip album!

I'm almost more excited about hearing new stuff from Aldrahn than I am about hearing new Thorns stuff (key word: almost). That dude has (had?) one of the best black metal voices, particularly on the Zyklon-B EP and the first DHG album.

This sounds great. Incidentally it looks like most if not all of the album is on YT, song by song anyway.

edit: got damn, "Something Growing in the Trees" is awesome. Sounds like a successor to that "Quintessence" song on Panzerfaust.

New and highly interesting Aldrahn interview surfaced today. There are some news concerning Thorns, as well as DHG. Link: https://adornmentsoftheking.wordpress.c ... hg-thorns/

Quote:
Now that you have been active in the recent live-performances of Dødheimsgard, can you reveal anything about the future of this band (who’s moves are always waited with anticipation by many)? How has it felt singing on stage again?

The next album is finished now as we speak, and will be released in February 2015. It will be like a continuance of 666 int. with myself on vocals throughout the whole damn thing ;)
Being on stage with DHG has been a smooth experience. I love doing it and it feels like a natural place for me to be.

How about the future of Thorns? I personally have been waiting for years for any news of the new album, which still apparently has your vocals, or am I mistaken?

The next Thorns album is more or less done , but I still have to do some vocal work, and Snorre has a lot of mixing left, so eventually it will be out, but “a year in the THORNS camp, is equal to ten regular years”, as Snorre says it himself.

Gives more meaning to the name Snorre........................... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz's until anything concrete surface's haha

The expectation of a new Thorns album will be intense... the last one was audio perfection really, such a great album. I cannot imagine anything other than second guessing one's self to be the hold up on this new supposed album... the dude has stage fright.

Same reason Blasphemy will never write another new album... it's been so long now and so many others 'wrote' their next album already that they never can themselves anymore, all that is left is rumor and teasing about 'maybe's' and making sure the old stuff stays legend.
