Seriously how can anybody like Zarach baal tharagh? I agree with a reviewer of one of some Zarach Baal Tharagh demo that he is the only musician that have more demos than fans. Pure crap haha

I love ultra raw, thrashy, lo-fi death/black metal like nobody else, but even I realize that style has some serious limitations, and it gets old pretty quick. With ZBT- my experience with his stuff is sort of like the old mining analogy of having a gold ore vein located beneath a septic tank. You will find some gold but will have to pan thraragh a lot of shit to find it. Or another way of looking at it, I bet you could put together one badass raw black/death metal album, or maybe two albums tops, if you were to cull through his entire back catalogue of demos.

I mean, this song for instance ("Darkness Kingdom")- Love it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pl_s4xhVsR8
Fast, raw, thrashy riffs, evil as hell, with a low fi ultra fuzzed out production- if you are into raw early black metal, it frickin' rules. If you like the more symphonic polished stuff you'll probably hate it.

This one:

I admit, hardly rocket science in the riff department, but it is simple and effective, and has that creepy, evil but thrashy vibe that always reminded me of early Bathory and Sodom for some reason. OF course, not everybody likes early Bathory and Sodom, and honestly I can't blame em.

But sadly, the vast majority of his stuff tends to be like this...

Just random and unfocused; honestly it sounds like he was just screwing around in the studio with a shitty practice amp and a drum machine, playing the first thing that came to the top of his head.

Keep going! I think the idea of making a ZBT "greatest hits" playlist/compilation is a really good one, but I'm not familiar enough with his work to do so myself.

What's there to say? Make enough songs fiddling with the same basic mix of techniques and sounds and you're bound to get some that come out pretty well for the intended style. It's pretty clearly by luck and happen stance seeing that this is never consistently replicated. Mr Mertz seems to enjoy the process of playing and recording music as an end in itself, so it's not really a big issue that the end product itself is not completely put together...

Make the list of best songs and send it to the man himself, maybe he'll put it out officially. I mean, why wouldn't he?

This one is kind of cool...reminds me of "Sepulchral Voice" (Sodom) or maybe a black metalized version of Septic Death. Cool track; he definatly put some more thought into the composition of this one.

Here's another decent one of his: Solo is a bit messy but the rest is good.

Problem is, he took down his youtube channel a while back, so a lot of the stuff he had up there is gone now. These tracks were uploaded by someone else, so there is a pretty small sampling of stuff (out of the millions of tracks he has recorded) to pick from to listen to now.

Some of his music is actually pretty alright, but that might've happened because he's trying to brute-force making good music by pumping out so much material or something. Maybe he's some sort of supercomputer that spits out a black metal song given a random seed.

That actually would be pretty sweet. I've been looking to get into ZBT, but I really can't be arsed to find out which of the 100 demos are worth listening to and which are shit. A large compilation, say, 2 CDs worth of music or so, would be awesome to get introduced to ZBT.
