Just read this on Annihilator's wikipedia page:

"Jeff Waters is reported to have written many "hit" songs for other artists, under an assumed name, in the country ballad and pop ballad genre."

I would have to say Romanian band Voltaj. The only member left from their metal days seems to be the bassist, although apparently he was not a founding member.

Here is a song from their first (metal) album:

It's hard to find a single song which exemplifies how horrible their later music is, but here are some:

believe me, if all of you could understand the lyrics of their new stuff you'd hate it even more.

Mike Rock, formerly of Swörd (Canada) played guitar on this female pop album:

and sound engineer Glen Robinson (Voïvod, Annihilator, Gwar, Kataklysm..) mixed some of the songs.

Latin pop/rock artist Juanes began his musical career playing in a thrash metal band called Ekhymosis.

Although I think this only lasted one album before they began to play pop rock.

Also, before Dream Theater, James LaBrie sang in a band that is as far away from Progressive metal as you can get. A sentimental glam pop outfit going under the name Winter Rose.

The first track of Winter Rose's album is some pretty nice speed metal. The rest is pretty much composed of the worst power ballads EVER.

Also that "thrash" (actually groove metal) band Joey Jordison was in in the early '90s was complete dogshit and you can hear the beginnings of Slipknot's sound in it. I mean, I guess it's faster than your typical '90s Pantera song, but the riffs are actually worse.

Håvard Jørgensen, who played guitar on Ulver's first 3 albums (the black metal/folk trilogy), and Satyricon's The Forest is my Throne, then left to make an electronic project called Akki & Hojo, and currently is the singer/guitarist/songwriter of pop band Inpublik...
