How can I be like you? I want to know what the curriculum is to listen for, so that when I hear a song or a band that a lot of people call metal, I can listen to it and be like... "oh this isn't metal... and here's why."

Like right now, I'm sort of in a comment war over BVB not being metal. I know when something is metal and when something isn't, I can't call out the specifics, I can just hear the difference.

In good time child. Lurk here and keep listening to music. You'll soon learn.

So what you mean is... you want to know what metal music is? I mean that is the bare minimum requirement to be able to say something is not metal. I suggest you start with bands and move on to groups.

Where would metal be without elitism? Manowar would be inviting everyone in the hall rather than calling out the wimps and poseurs. The Norwegian 2nd wave would be shrugging their shoulders instead of railing against jogging suits and so-called life metal. Someone has to draw the line & uphold standards (even if they are hugely subjective) - so what if you look like a prick or put a few noses out of joint? At least you defend your tastes with passion!
