I plan on creating a March Madness style bracket putting my favorite albums against each other once I’m done finding and listening to every possible Death Metal album I can find. I’m only midway through 1996 so I have a long way to go and thought it would be a fun project once I’m finished, if I ever finish. My top 5 will mostly be from 1996 and before unless I heard an album before I started this project. Genre can also be split with Thrash/Death, Doom/Death, Black Death etc. Looking forward to seeing other responses and chatting with y’all. Here we go, my top 5 so far.
1. Demilich-Nespithe
2. Dark Millenium-Ashore The Celestial Burden
3. Atrocity-Todessehnsucht
4. Anata-The Infernal Depths Of Hatred
5. Threnody-As The Heavens Fall

2. Entombed - Wolverine Blues
3. Death - Scream Bloody Gore
4. Vallenfyre - Fear Those Who Fear Him
5. Death - Leprosy

2. Immolation - Unholy Cult

Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness (absolute game changer with its morbid, atonal riffing wrapping back around to some harrowing melodies)
Deicide - Legion (riffs on top of riffs on top of riffs, arranged in an evil, twisted way)
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten (brutal, precision-hit metal)
Demilich - Nespithe (truly warped metal like it's fuckin' Cthulhu or something)
Vader - Litany (in a way, the Painkiller to De Profundis' Stained Class)

Copy/pasted from the last thread-

Autopsy - Mental Funeral
Molested - Blod-Draum
Possessed - Seven Churches
Incantation - Diabolical Conquest
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes
Septic Flesh - Temple of the Lost Race
Death - Scream Bloody Gore
Deceased - Fearless Undead Machines
Dead Congregation - Graves of the Archangels

No thought given to this and no particular order.

Given that this one is for 5 albums I will arbitrarily say cut Death, Possessed, Dead Congregation, Deceased, and Septic Flesh.

1.) Possession - Eternally Haunt
2.) Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
3.) Dominus - The First 9
4.) Bolt Thrower - Realm of Chaos
5.) Oxygen Destroyer - Bestial Manifestations of Malevolence and Death

I'm not hugely into death metal compared to other genres, so I have a few odd choices. I also really like Swansong by Carcass.

Thumbs up for this list. Kai's list is good too but it's got a non death metal album on it.

Gorguts - Obscura
Ulcerate - The Destroyers of All
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh
Behemoth - Demigod

Gorguts is number one, one of my favorite records of all time. The rest are unordered. In order to stop myself from going crazy, I only gave this question about 5 minutes of thought.

Death metal isn't my deepest realm, but at the moment I'd go with:

Bolt Thrower - Realm of Chaos / The IVth Crusade (essentially tied)
Amorphis - Privilege of Evil
Shub-Niggurath - The Kinglike Celebration
Slugathor - Circle of Death
Sarpanitum - Fidelium/Blessed Be My Brothers...

Close to the top 5:
Cruciamentum - Convocation of Crawling Chaos
Asphyx - Embrace the Death
Immolation - Dawn of Possession
Blut Aus Nord - What Once Was I (death metal in a black metal skin :) )

I remember reading somewhere on here that Nespithe is “An album recorded on another planet and released on earth.” Don’t know who said it, but it’s the only way I’ll ever describe it. It’s so alien I wonder if the members of the band have a spaceship. Timeghouls demo compilation is the only music that is 1/4th as close as sounding as alien as Nespithe.

Relinquished Souls is a great pick. Got an A grade from me for 1993. Inside the Unreal took home a B grade. They wouldn’t make my tournament but I appreciate the lesser known.

Listened to that album on my way home after working my construction job. A+ from me. Would definitely make my tourney and probably beat out a good amount of albums. I’d say it sits at 6-7 in my top 10.

Infester - To the Depths
Dyscrasia - Septical Stomach Pumped Remnants
Possessed - Seven Churches
Guttural Engorgement - Slow Decay of Infested Flesh
Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness

or something. No room for tokenism in a 5 point list, so might as well just think of the first 5 10/10 albums that come to mind.

Mortification really outdid themselves with that album. It got a B+ and probably sits right outside making it as of now. Giving it a second listen will probably help its case for me, but man how they fall off after. As I’ve gone along I cringe when they are next in the queue. Their albums after Scrolls just seem to keep getting worse as they show up on my list. Hopefully they get better but having unfortunately read some reviews it doesn’t seem like it’s gonna get better.

Exhumed of the Earth. Yes. 1000 times yes. A+. I probably play it back once a week. The best Doom/Death album I’ve heard so far. They are definitely making the tournament for that album.

Great pick. Will most likely make it sitting at an A- for me. To be honest I expected more with the reviews I read. Might have hyped it up for myself. Note to self, stop reading reviews before listening to albums.

Dismember definitely makes it with Like An Ever Flowing Stream. A+. Good pick. The Key falls short as of now. Doesn’t hit for me. Will revisit it at some point and see if I change my mind.

Rather than just list them, I'll give a reason: "Scream Bloody Gore" was just so over the top brutal compared to anything I had heard at the time- I was in high school when it came out, that it was almost too over the top. It was one of those albums that for me, really pushed the frontiers of what true heaviness was. Just the raw, crushing brutality of the thing really sold me. But that was so long ago... "Leprosy" was good too, but a little cleaner, still really heavy and gory though. This was my favorite period of Death; none of the later, more techincal and/or melodic stuff really grabbed me like those first two.

"Seven Churches" was total proto-death metal and arguably the first death metal album ever released. I thought, when I first heard it, that the vocals had more in common with hardcore punk than with metal, but remember this was 1984-85, when very little else of it's kind was out. The later material was a lot cleaner sounding. "Beyond the Gates" suffered in the mix, and while "Eyes of Horror" is a great thrash album I wouldn't say it was really death metal at that point.

Carcass "Reek of Putrefaction." Just the ultimate in pure bulldozing power, and so over the top noisy that it put cracks in the wall. I have never gotten over how heavy- and influential- that album was. Sadly though it inspired several thousands of half-assed goregrind bands that never really got even close to equalling it, though some of the better examples of Carcass-clones aren't that bad. but again, a watershed, landmark album for me in terms of pure death!

Can't really leave Obituary out of this list. I always preferred the second one, "Cause of Death" though, to the first one. Songs were better, and they had the dark, doomish ambience down, and it was super heavy and morbid.

Trying to decide on the last one- "Altars of Madness," "Left Hand Path," "Mental Funeral," and "Serpent Temptation" are all great candidates, could have picked any one of' em, so...I'll go with an obscure choice instead; the first Therion album. "Of Darkness." Yeah, it was death metal- raw, atmospheric, crushing, dark, heavy, all those things. Some of the later elements were there- keyboards were more subdued and used to underlay the dark atmosphere, but the band shifted geard and turned into some kind of progressive goth-tinged metal and I lost interest in them afterwards.

Obituary makes it for me with Slowly We Rot. A+. Cause of Death fell to B-. Hmm, a significant drop. Definitely gonna have to take another listen to see if my ears are correct on that.
“Of Darkness” got a C+, but “Beyond Sanctorum” got an A-. That’s a significant increase and another I’ll have to take another listen to.

I find the songs to be immensely superior on Cause of Death. It is what I like to refer to as "deceptive simplicity" - the riffs are practically as bare-bones as possible, and there is nothing remotely technical, intricate, or even particularly ambitious about it. Yet, it remains one of the most sincerely effective metal album I have ever heard.
