I would say, my favourite 2012 metal albums so far would be:

Wintersun - Time I
The Faceless - Autotheism

You don't have to leech/illegally download it. It's streaming on the Dark Descent Band Camp page.

Add The Levitation Hex's first, and self-titled.

Kickass successor to Alchemist's unfortunate breakup.

No, I gave it a good listen for sure. Probably more than I do most requests/emails that I get for bands. You know, so many bands, so little time. Even I can't release everything I like. :)

I appreciate the time you took then, it is indeed a really interesting album! Maybe in the future, who knows. :)

This year is going really well for EPs, in addition to the excellent Agalloch and DsO ones, Encoffination's new one is the best thing they've done, a huge relief after putting the unbearable O' Hell last year. The guitar tone is lightened up a bit, which sacrifices weight in favour of actually being halfway interesting to listen to. The first side is the same stuff as before but well done, but the second side is where it shines, lots of bells, an uptempo part with a goofy punk beat, clean chanted vocals, it's interesting and has an atmosphere which I can best sum up as a ritualistic cult which happens to convene their evil meetings in a Moby Dick era whaling town. It's interesting, it's unique, and it rules. The tracklisting is a bit weird, since it pretty much ends with song, outro, outro. But the outro tracks are cool as so it isn't really a negative.

How is that one? I really didn't like Serpent Rouge at all but love the early stuff.

Unfortunately, it' s a slightly worse than the early stuff. There is a slight "ethnic/oriental" influence. Still really good and typical Arcana.

Asphyx - Deathhammer. As old school as it should be, without sounding like a repetition of the early stuff.

They're Spanish, go figure! :p They're a relatively new band with a three year track record and the demo/EP/album path. I'm a regular at Memento Mori and I suddenly decided to check out the album based on its description and what do you know? It's a beast! I already hunted down the EP and the album follows as these MM editions are limited in offer.

Evoken - Atra Mors

I'm listening to this for the second time now, and loving it. Funeral doom is a tricky genre, but these guys pull it off brilliantly.

Dead Beyond Buried's new album the Dark Era is some of the most unique and punishing death metal I've heard all year. England is really churning out a lot of heavy hitters this year, Bloodshot Dawn, Winterfylleth, Anaal Nathrakh, now these guys too..

Only listened to it once, but I am loving the new Graveyard album, Lights Out. The style remains the same as the last album, but the areas of inconsistency have all been cleaned up. The catchy rock songs that always rocked, the slower blues tracks which used to be tedious are great, and the shorter more hard rocking numbers like "Seven Seven" are all expertly written. The vocals have improved, and the whole sound is excellent and inviting, and the whole thing is super catchy and infectious, I love it.

GRAVELAND - Pamięc i Przeznaczenie

More than just another lifeless rerecording of and old album, the recreation made this masterpiece better than ever.

Nope, I'll give it a go. I tend to find these sort ritualistic bands are much better in shorter forms than longer albums.

Silverthorn is really growing on me. It's probably Kamelot's darkest and most hopeless release, and with the most genuine sorrow they've ever had. I still like Khan better (well, in his prime anyway), but this proves that they're a talented band and can do well without him. If they thought this was the best choice, I am siding with them after this album - clearly they know what they are doing.

March of Progress is definitely in my top 3 or 4, along with Hellwell and Pharaoh. Sonata Arctica's is also in there - massively replayable hook-fest.

Anatomia's Decaying in Obscurity is absolutely gruesome and dark. I'm not sure I heard an album which sounds as much as... death as this one. I mean, it's fucking heavy and pounding, disgusting and morbid. As if you were hearing a musical description of death itself and what does around it. You feel like death is claiming someone's life while listening to this. And with the vocals, it's beyond this world.

Agreed. Liking it a lot more than Hisingen Blues (which was still excellent) after a few listens. Kind of a Zeppelin-feel with Lights Out.
