Horrendous' The Chills is a damn amazing old school death metal album, the vocalist sounds like a mix of Chuck and Van Drunen to me.

Cool. I didn't know that they had a new album out, I really liked Murderer.

No, I gave it a good listen for sure. Probably more than I do most requests/emails that I get for bands. You know, so many bands, so little time. Even I can't release everything I like.

I'm sitting here in my room in front of the PC, completely baffled by the Ataraxy album released last month on Memento Mori. It's as if Finland and Holland collided in a maelstrom of creepy atmospheric death metal. Holy fuck this is so good!

How you keep sharing amazing bands without failing every year?

How is that one? I really didn't like Serpent Rouge at all but love the early stuff.

This Ataraxy is BADASS, where did these guys come from?

This year is going really well for EPs, in addition to the excellent Agalloch and DsO ones, Encoffination's new one is the best thing they've done, a huge relief after putting the unbearable O' Hell last year. The guitar tone is lightened up a bit, which sacrifices weight in favour of actually being halfway interesting to listen to. The first side is the same stuff as before but well done, but the second side is where it shines, lots of bells, an uptempo part with a goofy punk beat, clean chanted vocals, it's interesting and has an atmosphere which I can best sum up as a ritualistic cult which happens to convene their evil meetings in a Moby Dick era whaling town. It's interesting, it's unique, and it rules. The tracklisting is a bit weird, since it pretty much ends with song, outro, outro. But the outro tracks are cool as so it isn't really a negative.

You heard the Genocide Shrines EP yet?

Anatomia's Decaying in Obscurity is absolutely gruesome and dark. I'm not sure I heard an album which sounds as much as... death as this one. I mean, it's fucking heavy and pounding, disgusting and morbid. As if you were hearing a musical description of death itself and what does around it. You feel like death is claiming someone's life while listening to this. And with the vocals, it's beyond this world.

Only listened to it once, but I am loving the new Graveyard album, Lights Out. The style remains the same as the last album, but the areas of inconsistency have all been cleaned up. The catchy rock songs that always rocked, the slower blues tracks which used to be tedious are great, and the shorter more hard rocking numbers like "Seven Seven" are all expertly written. The vocals have improved, and the whole sound is excellent and inviting, and the whole thing is super catchy and infectious, I love it.

Indeed, Hard Time Lovin sounds like something that could have sat on any of LZs biggest albums without raising an eyebrow.
