I love how both Wintersun's Time and Anaal Nathrakh's Vanitas get leaked on the same goddamn day. two of my favorite bands just had to put out albums on the same day... guess I know how I'm spending my sunday now.

Yeah it's in my top 10 for sure after one listen, still not sure if it breaks into my top 3 at this point though, those spots are all pretty high quality.

Thy Darkened Shade - Eternvs Mos, Nex Ritvs.
Thrashy Black Metal with some punk influences.
An absolute riff fest that doesnt let up in intensity. For some reason i didnt expect it to be so good, but man am i glad i was proven wrong.

Daylight dies - A Frail Becoming is a giant disappointment so far. It has everything that Lost to the Living has.... except atmosphere. And if you can't create atmospheric Doom/Death Metal, you shouldn't be making it in the first place.

On the brighter side, the new My Dying Bride is amazing.

Behexen for the win! They've maintained a particular savage quality to their music, with a riffing style I haven't heard in other bands. This reminds me of their "From the Devil's Chalice" material.

Sinister - The Carnage Ending is pretty badass. It pushes the bounds of death metal in brutality without being brutal death, which is a clever, admirable feat. Very heavy, technical, and energetic while maintaining the brooding, cool aggression of traditional death metal. The appropriately dark yet clear production is also well done. Great album.

With less than 3 months of the year to go the best of this year largely goes to the old school for me. Rush, Accept, Overkill top the list for great albums for me. Ne Obliviscaris Portal of I was also fucking excellent. The worst thing I've managed to sit through this year is that Van Halen record. Fucking awful. Another disappointment, but not so bad was Angel Witch's As Above, So Below.

I can't even make a top 5 yet. With so much coming out starting with Anaal Nathrakh, any one of about 10 upcoming releases could clinch top spot. I am salivating. :D

So there's this guy on the front page who linked to this huge list of his of the metal albums he'd listened to this year. The top album on his list is The Stars Bode You Farewell by Bound By Entrails.

I spun that shit on Spotify and holy mother of Christ is that thing awesome.

Relive the magic. Like three members of the band showed up and contributed a great deal to the conversation. That album really is mindblowing and at the top of my list, for sure.

I'm sure they've been mentioned ad infinitum in this thread, but since this episode of Sesame Street was brought to you by the letter B, I will say that Binah and Begrime Exemious also have resisted most efforts to be removed from my CD player over the course of 2012.

The new Begrime rules so hard. I like Impending Funeral of Man more, but Visions of the Scourge is still so good. It will probably end up around the 8-10 range on my best of list at the end of the year.

Pretty sure Enslaved has my #1 spot locked up, with Candlemass close behind.

I'm sitting here in my room in front of the PC, completely baffled by the Ataraxy album released last month on Memento Mori. It's as if Finland and Holland collided in a maelstrom of creepy atmospheric death metal. Holy fuck this is so good!

I've just found out a ton of power metal bands I like have been putting out albums. A lot of listening ahead of me!

Thy Majestie's sounds pretty awesome, with only hearing a few songs. Seven Kingdoms and Magica both have albums that sound decent. Again only heard a few songs, but they didn't particularly blow my socks off. I'm also going to be checking out Soulspell (they did some big collaboration with a bunch of famous metal vocalists), the new Kamelot album, and Love.Might.Kill's sophomore effort. Then I need to check out 3 debut albums; Germán Pascual (from Sweden?), Terra Incognita (from Greece), and Still Alive (from Brazil).

Speaking of power metal, I learned today that there is a band named Custard. A serious band, that doesn't sing about cookery, with a fat vocalist, named goddamn Custard. The music itself sounded like a mix of Iron Fire and whatever band James Rivera is associating himself with nowadays, so it wasn't really all that bad, but they're fucking named Custard. There's no way it means something cool in another language, it's goddamned Custard.

I agree, it's pretty good. Solstafir isnt my thing, I even disliked them live but somehow I am enjoying Earth Blood Magic quite a lot.

I really like Kekal - Autonomy. Most of the album is listenable for free on their soundcloud and it's neat.

I can say that this band really blew me away! Their previous EP is also very good, more riffs than atmosphere and with a slightly bigger Bolt Thrower influence. Hell, they're both great records.

The new Daylight Dies is a major disappointment. No atmosphere, no hooks, nothing memorable, vocals feel weaker, bland chugging sections. I have no desire to listen to it again.

Guess I was right, huh? I've listened to it again and again and it still isn't doing anything for me. It's basic melodic death / doom with nothing going on. Sad that it took four years for such mediocrity to get released, and even worse that the band felt so personal about this music.

Edit: well, it's slowly creeping back up to mildly enjoyable.

I swear everybody has been turning the album off after "Sons of Winter and Stars". I can literally think of fifty or sixty albums I'd rather listen to. Including Shadowmaker.

EDIT: To add another name to the pile, I think thrash fans should check out Chronosphere. Some good Greek stuff, quite on the heavy side with a vocalist that sounds like Chuck Billy in his prime.

You're giving to much credit to "Sons of Winter and Stars", that song on it's own in unbearable.

I highly enjoyed Mgla's With Hearts Toward None which is without a doubt one of the top-3 best albums of this year so far. Darkside and M showed with their magnificent 2008 full-length Groza what they are capable of and with WHTN they have took everything in their catalog and comprised into everything that's so fucking great with Mgla and took the essence of all that and made their absolute best release to date.

Oh, and Down IV - The Purple Ep is by far the greatest release of this year. Love every single record they'd put out and the EP was not a disappointment, not by the least. Down right awesome all the way through.

The Purple Ep wasn't great at all. It had maybe two good songs on it.
