Grind is subject to the laws of subjectivity just like everything else, with the exception of Horrified. If you don't love Horrified there is something very, very, wrrroonnng with you (read like Bill Murray in Stripes).

Can anyone point me towards notable grind band or three that would be too 'punk' for these archives? Compared to my interest in black and death, im merely a casual grind fan, but cant think of one i have heard that is 'punk-like'.

Yeah, that was the first one that came to mind for me as well. The swiss Fear of God (aka the real Fear of God) are also worth looking into, especially if you hate music.

Thanks all. I have one more question: where would a band such as hymen holocaust fit in the metal punk spectrum? Musically speaking of course- lyrically its some sort of porno gore.

The first few songs on their myspace actually sounds like pretty tame hardcore (maybe some Nardcore skate-punk influence?). Weird name for a band with this sound.

Slight Slappers and Bathtub Shitter aren't on the archives either, I'm sure the Chainsaw Justice clique could come up with a huge list.

edit: Apparently Slight Slappers are powerviolence. That's what happens when you reference bands you don't actually know dick about.

Basicly the most brutal of brutal.
They're so brutal that in a way, they aren't brutal.

They've passed the stage of brutality.

They are so brutal that their brutality is retroactive?

I really dig what I've heard of the first LDoH album, mostly because they still had a somewhat organic sounding production. After that the guitars get completely lost in the wall-o-sound for me and I sort of lose interest. Hard to believe they aren't on the archives. I wonder if Carcass and Regurgitate hadn't released anything past their debut full-lengths if they would be excluded as well...

Quoth Agathocles: Grind is Protest.

But yes, it's more a punk subgenre. Even the pornogrind, goregrind, cybergrind, and powerviolence genres while having some influences in death metal, industrial, and thrash metal are essentially hybrids and deviations of grindcore with said influences.

When you call someone ignorant, it's generally wise to make sure you use some half-decent grammar.

This thread lacks Blood. To me, they are the quintessential grind band. They came at the peak of grindcore, and pretty much summed it up.

Yes! Blood is absolutely essential to any grind collection. Such amazing stuff. Still need to get this.

Obviously from my username, I'm a huge fan of Carcass when they were a "grind" band. So no, there's nothing wrong with grindcore at all! Some of it is quite good, in fact.

Blood is fucking phenomenal. "Gas. Flames. Bones" is one of my favorite albums of all time. Another good "grindy" German band is Naked Whipper.

For truly punk-inspired grind (or grind-inspired punk?) I'd go with Doom. Great band indeed.

Sadly enough, I've never given much of a listen to Blood or to Doom, but I'm intending to rectify that as soon as I can!

What Doom album is best?

Oh man, you gotta get into Doom. Think about it; they're the band associated with the word "Doom", meaning they have to be good! Sort of like how Mayhem is Mayhem, Blood is Blood, Death is Death, etc etc... many have been called those names, but those are the bands that are most known under them. Get my meaning?

I'd suggest the "Total Doom" CD to someone who is new to them, as I think it has their first couple of albums on it. "Police Bastard" is their quintessential song, so if you want the band summed up in like 1:30, just listen to it. They developed more into a sort of "grind" later than this material, but start from there and just go with it. I promise you won't be disappointed!

I ll admit that my pitiful grind knowledge is limited to the more popular bands like Napalm Death, Carcass, Extreme Noise Terror etc. Mainly the bands which owe atleast some of their fame to John Peel. Other than that there is just a few bands I discovered thanks to grindcore help thread. Most bands of the genre dont suit me much. Not to mention the fact that most grind songs are minuscle and I dont think I have ever been able to see a grind album as one slab of music..

That said grind seems more interesting as a genre than the usual brutal death stuff mainly because the grind bands know when you re supposed to shut up. The 1 to 2 min songs are what suits the genre perfectly. Too bad most bands go for much shorter lengths than that.

I have a strong dislike for this Goregrind/Porno trend. There's a few good reasons why, too. First, I have a strong dislike towrads the tough guy attitude. 2: Most of these bands are so infectuous with generic slams, boring groovy riffs and blast beats that go nowhere; Vocals that you can only decipher as "breee- breee-breee(and sometimes there's not even any lyrics at all...)" don't help very much either. And lastly the lyrics are childish and rely soley on shock value. Quite frankly I would rather watch some old B movie slasher flick for this kind of entertainment.

Gimmie some ols-school Bolt Thrower, or Napalm Death's Scum any day :nods:

You just described slam/deathcore, not goregrind. Goregrind sounds almost nothing like what you just described.

I love grind of any type, but it gets old fast. I could listen to death metal for days, but listening to grindcore for more than thirty minutes at a time is a pain in the ass. For example, Nadir by Abaddon Incarnate goes for 43 minutes, which makes the album far less enjoyable because most of the tracks are very repetitive. However if it had been fifteen minutes shorter it'd be one of my favourite albums.

Most good grind albums are fairly short. Most good hardcore and crust albums in general are pretty short.

Jello Biafra from a Max RNR interview wrote:
There are threads of it, but punk has gotten so popular that the name gets attached to all sorts of things — everything from Jawbreaker to Brutal Truth. There are all kinds of communities there, all net-working with each other. None of them are as tight culturally as the death metal community where you have people in Norway swapping tapes with people in Malaysia, and all the bands sound more than a little bit alike. And isn't it ironic that death metal is the first form of rock music that has caught on with poor people over the world. When I was in Brazil, I was told that all rock music and punk was scorned by the people of the slums. It didn't speak to them. They thought of it as a bourgeois [art] form they didn't want to have anything to do with. They would rather listen to samba or death metal. Death metal is popular from Moldavia to Cuba...Partly because in the grindcore form it's easy to play and have a lot of attitude and fun with it. Also the violent and anti-Christian imagery has a world wide appeal.

Although he takes of death metal, he seems to hit toward old school death metal and grindcore. I think that's everything that's wrong with grindcore for some and that's everything that some people love about grindcore. It's angry, fast and fun. You won't see most grindcore bands trying to justify an extreme form of music by claiming " hey look a lot of stuff we do has elements from jazz and classical" like so many death metal bands.
