List bands that sadly only made one album but it turned out to be amazing.
I'll start
Demilich- Nespithe
Wormed- Planisphaerium
Lykathea Aflame- Elvenefris

Don't really know if this counts cause they changed their name later and made another album but at least:

Profugus Mortis - So It Begins

Really, this isn't a bad idea for a topic, but it's a bad start. You can't really expect to get a discussion going when you have absolutely nothing to say about the releases you hold in such high esteem.

I certainly agree about Demilich and I wonder where they would have gone had they made another album. I wonder, would it have been an even stranger beast, or would they have decided to release something more conventional?

For some reason, a lot of great doomy death metal bands seem to have put out nothing but a single album. I'm thinking specifically of Sorrow, Winter and Dream Death. All huge, massive, powerful pieces of music. aha, Immortal Fate, there's another one..some of the most tenebrous and twisted death metal to come out of the United States, for sure. I need to get "Beautiful" on CD.

Dusk is a band I worship. They only released an EP, an album, some track and another short EP. They started out as a more death metal sounding band, but their sole album is a lot more doom metal sounding. It's a lot more doom than death, but I would it classify it as doom and neither as death metal, it's pretty much both at the same time. The atmosphere is dark and almost foreboding, slightly depressive, a little mysterious too. There some awesome keys around though are only there for texture and atmosphere.

Yeah your right. I don't even know how to describe nespithe! it's so unique there will never been anything like it. it's mid paced death metal at it's finest!
IMO this is what Chris Barnes tried to do and failed.

I love the drums on that Dusk album. SO heavy and pounding. I haven't listened to that in ages!

Brimstone - Carving A Crimson Career

Easily one of my favorite metal albums. My thoughts after each song were, "Holy shit they can't top the first song on this"...and then, "Holy shit they can't top the first two songs on this..."

You get the idea.

AH yes, definitely...both bands were amazing.

Anubi from Lithuania also comes to mind for me. Very strange stuff...almost unclassifiable, but occasionally resembling black metal. Can't say I've ever heard anything at all like this band, and the album feels like a journey into a mind both magical and insane. They'll never make anything else as the mastermind behind the project is now deceased.

There is no possible way that this discussion could end without mentioning Scald - Will Of The Gods Is Great Power. The title became meaningful for the band itself, because about a year after the album release singer Maxim Adrianov died in a train accident. Thus Scald was dead and some members formed a new band, namely Tumulus, and then played folk metal.

Scald was kind of Candlemass with Viking themes, meaning that Adrianov was a very talented clean vocalist and the music was basically good old doom metal riffing, so with those elements combined and long song lengths "Will Of The Gods Is Great Power" is an epic journey on the oceans that seems to be an odyssey.

Violent Force - Malevolent Assault of Tomorrow

If you ask me, it's just as good as Sodom's early work. I wish they would release their unreleased album.

This. These men had the gods by their side when they made this landmark of an album. Guess Odin couldn't wait for Agyl to grow old so he snatched him from us way too soon.

I can go and go with bands like this...and some of them have not even released albums but only EP's. Some of my favourites:

Crush
Lords Of The Crimson Alliance
Vampyr
Dark Age (US)
Witchkiller
Cities

All great classic heavy metal bands.

I certainly agree with you on Dream Death. They were such a great proto-doom death band. It's really a shame that they disbanded. Although their MA page says that their active again, so maybe something's actually going on?

Haha, that sounds like a plug to me.

Can't wait to play a show with these guys again in February. This year we really will hit up ROchester, too.

And yes, new material from Dream Death would be really welcome. I never did get into Pennence, as much as I like traditional forms of doom.

Yes, definitely.

I'm a big fan of Altar Shadows' solitary album, "Speckled Falcons," a really nice mix of black metal and Lithuanian folk music. I was disappointed to learn that the person behind Altar Shadows decided to end the project not too long after the release of the album.

That's what I came in here to say. It's a combination of Candlemass-style doom with healthy levels of Bathory-esque epic themes and so much amazing atmosphere. Just absolutely sucks you in.

But mostly the Silencer thing. Probably one of my favorite black metal releases of all time, which is saying something 'cause I'm not particularly big on black metal, save for a select few bands.

Please stop turning this into a dull list thread. Most of the mentions I don't even know what genre of metal they are. Could be metalcore or speed metal for all I know. This is the metal discussion board for a reason. And lists are not discussion.

First one to come to mind is Assault - Survival in the Street. Very energetic speed metal with a lot of catchy rhythms and powerful vocals. The music has a bit of a sloppy sense to it but it is just so damn upbeat and fun to listen to.

Repulsion 'Horrified'

This masterpiece of an album needs more elaboration! This is the thing that made me a grind fan. It's not quite as unrelenting as the stuff grind acts are putting out these days, as the thrash influence still lends the album somewhat of a "fun" vibe, but I could listen to this thing over and over with a stupid grin on my face the entire time. I've heard a lot of complaints about the repetitiveness of the riffs and while there are a number of them that sound similar I think it adds to the overall continuity and sound of the band...a signature style if you will. Those lightning fast punch-in solos are so beautiful, I worship them.

I think I read in an interview with Scott Carlson that the motivation behind their song writing was to be as fast as Siege and as heavy as Celtic Frost. I don't know if they are as heavy as the Frost but they made a pretty good run at it and I'm eternally grateful for this slab of O.G. grind.

Oh and: Best. Bass. Ever.

Never got that album. I pretty much agree with CHesses-Priced review. Starts off with a nice interesting riff but then it just quickly gets monotonous for me and goes in one ear and out the other.

Repulsion's Horrified should be on every list. Classic.

Rottrevore - Iniquitous
One of the many great DM bands with just one album. This rates on the top of the pile for me though, can't get enough of this. Heavvvvy

Necrony - Pathological Performances
Pre-Nasum. Wish they had kept this going as well. Far too overlooked.

1. those which no more exist

Disembarkation - very solid technical death metal from Canada, one album Rancorous Observision (2000)

Ved Buens ende - everybody knows that one... but we can say they continue as Virus

Mars on earth - nicely weird industrial black metal band with only EP which I am highly recommending to check out

Meridian - band from swiss with only one but quite good black metal release, Morgul from Norway did the vocals

The man called tea - lack of informations about that band, probably split-up. I only know there were some member(s) of Sirrah and their only release Sketchpad is highly original sounding industrial metal

The Helheim society - fathers of industrial black metal, only EP Fenris

Fimbulwinter - good release of norwegian black metal with some famous members and bad production

2. those which are active

it is probably not main subject of this thread but autor also listed some existing bands so I will list some which I like too...

Apotheosis (Mlt)
Apocryphal Voice
The Eternal blade
Drastique
Empyrean Sky
Frantic bleep
Gigan
Age of silence
Akphaezya

Well Blind FUry just came on in my Itunes so it reminded me to mention them.

Fantastic NWOBHM, even if it is listed as from Germany. Can't really describe this one besides saying it is catchy with excellent riffs and vocals, pretty much just awesome NWOBHM.

I was coming back here to mention Ved Buens Ende, but Slavonic has already done so. While Virus is a continuation in some senses, and indeed, the second Virus album features a number of what were originally supposed to be VBE songs, I dont' really feel that the VBE entity lives anymore. I guess it is fitting that such a force should begin and end with the monument that is "Written in Waters". The demo is also fantastic, of course.

I also agree about Repulsion. One of the very very few grind bands that I truly love.

what? From Germany?! Blind Fury's 'Out of Reach' is pretty much unanimously considered essential NWOBHM. it's great. i guess thats the only full-length they official put out, but they were also known as Satan, and later Pariah.

Gotta agree with Zdan about Witchkiller. 'Day of the Saxons' is dope.
and Cities is pretty mindblowing too. wish they had more stuff

When I saw this thread, the first band that came to mind was Spiral Architect.

Trve Norwegian tech metal. These guys may not be the most technical metal band in existence, but they're certainly high up on the list. Crazy riffs, migraine-inducing song structures, and some of the sweetest bass that you'll find outside of jazz fusion isn't everyones cup o' tea, but I absolutely love it. Listening to 'A Sceptic's Universe' is like listening to Psychotic Waltz and Watchtower at the same time, and that alone makes them twice as cool as the average metal band.

Unfortunately, they only managed to release one album (hence their inclusion in this thread), but still live on, in a way, thanks to Twisted Into Form, a band that harbors 2 Spiral Architect expatriates, and features song writing very much in the vein of SA. While TIF's debut, 'When Affliction Comes to Awaken the Dreamer', may not be as crazy, on the whole, as ASU, It still remains the next-best thing to a sequel.
