There are Rasputin Records stores across California (http://www.rasputinmusic.com/locations.html) in Berkeley, Concord, Campbell, Fresno, San Francisco, Mountain View, San Lorenzo, Stockton, and Vallejo. I've only been to the SF, Berkeley, and Mountain View branches, and the Mountain View one is the best, but they're all great.

Anything in Southwestern Ontario? I'm tired of shuffling through all the crap in HMV for one half-decent album.

Going to Berlin from Feb 20-26. What record stores should I check out? I'm mainly after used metal and prog vinyls. Furthermore, info on any interesting gigs, fests, etc. taking place in Berlin at the period of time in question is much appreciated.

Vintage Vinyl in Fords, New Jersey. I know people that drive a pretty good distance to go there. New and used vinyl and CD's. Huge selection of everything under the sun. Especially metal. They even have a section devoted to Black Metal LP's all by itself. Most well known metal bands stop there when they come through New Jersey, to play or do a signing for a new release. Only real bad point is due to New Jerseys never ending highway construction, and no left turn policy the place is a bitch to get to but well worth it. Easily have spent 3 hours looking through used vinyl and cd's there.

Going to Portland, Oregon for a week. Anyone know of any good shops there that have a decent selection of metal?

EDIT:

Went to Anthem Records today. They've got a killer selection. It's a small shop, but the people are friendly and they've got a lot of rare/imported material, mostly black metal, but some doom and death.

Found a couple of OOP albums for about $15 each.

Going to check out a couple more shops in the area, i'll post info on them when I go later on this week.

got a pretty weird flyer in my bag (didn't notice it in store) last time in Metal Haven Chicago about a progressive annihilation sale and that new releases would still be stocked as long as the store "remains open"... so is this another way to say they're going out of business as soon as they can clear merchandise out ?

A heads-up to all Chicago metalheads: If you're bummed out about Metal Haven closing and still prefer an actual storefront to ordering online, fear not! There is another metal store in town: Apocalipsis Nocturnal. Make sure to swing by Metal Haven's Armageddon Sale first, though!

That place sucks. The end of Metal Haven is a true sign of the dying state of metal in America. Too many internet download kids, too much metalcore, too little *metalhead* spirit. If Philly and Chicago can't support well established retail stores, there's little hope left for any other cities. Sure NYC , SF/LA might be left with some mixed-stores (rock/punk/indy/eclectic) .. but that's about it. Is Hogwild in San Antonio still open? If so, I can't imagine them making it much longer. While shopping in retail isn't really any cheaper than online, I will miss the spirit of the physical sight of being surrounded by options, ruffling through closeout sales, hearing metal blaring on the speakers while I shop, being able to get something in the moment rather than wait 2 days to 2 weeks for it to arrive. Oh well... Maybe at least in 5-10 years you won't see 13 year olds in COB tshirts at Nunslaughter shows... a fair trade I suppose.

I haven't been to Apocalipsis Nocturnal yet, although I intend to check it out soon. I've heard good things about one of the stores that preceded it though. Anyway, I tend to agree with you about Metal Haven and the current metal scene, but I am not going to take this lying down: I'm going to do everything in my power to keep metal record stores alive. Right now, I think that means supporting Apocalipsis Nocturnal.

I went to Jackpot Records in Portland, Oregon today. Very sparse, not much there beyond some hipster metal. Plus they're fairly overpriced. About $15 per album. Silly when there's another better shop a couple of blocks over that has the same exact selection and then some for cheaper.

Let me say again, if you're ever in the area (portland, oregon), go to Anthem Records.

The only thing I can tell you about in Memphis is Spin Street, where unfortunately they have the metal mixed in with the rock section (Jobros next to Judas Priest). New CD's range from about $15-20, but they can sometimes have a few decent albums in the used section, usually for about $5-10. I can't think of anything in Nashville. Say, what part of TN are you from, I attend uni in Memphis, but live in Henderson.

I'm from Adamsville so not too far apart actually. I'm attending at Lambuth Uni in Jackson TN. I'll be seeing Skeletonwitch in Memphis end of the month actually and my friend mentioned Spin Street. So maybe I'll find something there and if not more to blow at the show.

Everyday Music has a branch there. They're not a specialty shop, but they do offer a good selection (judging from what their portland shops have to offer).
