Dream Theater anyone?

Eh, I disagree. They have some pretty heavy songs.

The Gathering are pretty "light". I'd say anything after Nighttime Birds would qualify.

They pretty much ceased being metal after Nighttime Birds, and as for the aforementioned album, I've heard much lighter metal.

Unicorn (Italy) that's cheesey video game music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOvtXCGG4eQ and it's got 116 views mostly from you guys i'm sure. It sounds like something out of a teenage angst afternoon special. It's horrible. I was horriffied that it sucked so bad. You guys listen to some sick shit but Unicorn is just sad, sad, sad.

I guess not everything can sound as riveting as late era Satyricon. Seriously, you have no room to talk.

Ocean Machine: Biomech by Devin Townsend maybe? Arguable though, since he does so many screams and wails.

Ocean Machine has some really heavy parts in it at times, I don't see how anyone could seriously mention devin's solo material as being the "lightest metal band". I mean hell even KI was heavy in places.

Meh, Voices in the Fan and Funeral are pretty light.

Yeah? And so is Voice of the Soul, but nobody's calling Death a light band.

Well scratch all that. Praying Mantis is one of the lightest metal bands.

Skylark... so..... sweet, for a Power Metal Band
And Jethro Tull... well, they are Progressive Rock, not Metal. Like Dream Theater, but they have heavy songs.

Praying Mantis are not considered metal by this website, so depending on who you talk to, they might not qualify.

Kudos to anyone who said Alcest because it's the correct answer.

That's not to say that the band is bad, but they use a heavy shoegaze element which is one of the lightest genres of music period anyhow.

Shoegaze can be crushingly heavy depending on how it's done. I do think "Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde" is extremely light, particularly "Tir nan Og" which reminds me of elves and druids.

You're completely mistaken. In fact, My Bloody Valentine, pretty much the godfathers of shoegaze, are one of the few bands to have taken the "loudest band ever" title away from Manowar.

Evidence.

Every now and then, we get these threads about what the heaviest metal band is. I've yet to see one about what the lightest band is.

So, who do you guys think is the lightest? Who has the thinnest guitar, most saccharine vocals, and softest drumming while still being a legitimate metal band?

THIN LIZZY... if you consider it metal (of course, one of the starters)

Yup. Not to mention a lot of the tones on their records are extremely abrasive and harsh. Shoegaze isn't just about delay and chorus pedals, folks.

Indeed. Many shoegaze bands could be described as drone rock, even.

Also, if you need proof on the harshness of shoegaze, look no further than Jesu. The melodies, chord progressions and singing styles may be mellow, but the sounds can be extremely harsh, much more so than numerous metal bands.

I'm coming into this thread a little late, but I've been following it and as soon as I listened to this song I shit myself, and here's why: go open the link to that Unicorn song again and listen to the riff that comes in at about 0:21 or 0:22 and then go listen to this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2VNoFhYL1g

[edit]This, by the way, totally gives credence to what matrixmetal said:

My Bloody Valentine, above all on Loveless, were huge sounding. If any of you haven't heard that album, go check it out, because they use some seriosuly gnarly guitar tones. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0DLCyWr ... re=related

When it comes to that sort of really heavy shoegazeish sort of stuff, i.e. Jesu, who I saw mentioned earlier, the Angelic Process also comes to mind as absolutely earth-shaking.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOPU-1L4xF4

I'm not calling either band metal, of course, nor am I trying to steer the thread off-topic, but it's certainly a good springboard for the inverse of this thread, namely the heaviest non-metal bands.
