From Blue Cheer's website:

Quote:
I have to report that Dickie's health has taken a turn for the worse. Please light a candle and keep him in your prayers.

Thank you from Duck, Paul, Dickie's family and all the 1%'s
out there.

Let's just hope he gets better, we don't need another loss and especially the driving force of Blue Cheer.

--

Update: He has just passed on.

RIP Dickie, you had a long and solid musical career and will be remembered.

Quote:
Dickie Peterson, the bassist/vocalist and founding member of BLUE CHEER, passed away this morning (Monday, October 12) at 5 a.m. in Germany. He was 61 years old.

BLUE CHEER was an American blues-rock band that initially performed and recorded in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and has been sporadically active since. Based in San Francisco, BLUE CHEER played in a psychedelic blues-rock style, and was also credited for pioneering heavy metal (their cover of "Summertime Blues" is sometimes cited as the first in the genre), punk rock, stoner rock, doom metal and grunge.

Throughout his life, Peterson's relationship to music has been all-consuming. He was quoted as saying, "I've been married twice, I've had numerous girlfriends, and they'll all tell you that if I'm not playing music I am an animal to live with. . . Music is a place where I get to deal with a lot of my emotion and displaced energy. I always only wanted to play music, and that's all I still want to do."

Despite the fact that BLUE CHEER was considered a pioneer in many different genres, Peterson downplayed the band's influence, stating in an interview, "People keep trying to say that we're heavy metal or grunge or punk, or we're this or that. The reality is we're just a power trio and we play ultra-blues, and it's rock 'n' roll. It's really simple what we do."

Peterson spent much of the past two decades based in Germany, performing with BLUE CHEER and with other groups as well. In 1998 and 1999, he played a number of dates in Germany with the HANK DAVISON BAND and as an acoustic duo with Hank Davison under the banner DOS HOMBRES.

Heh, I glanced at the thread title and read it as "Cher has died" for a moment.

I'm sure Liebling is mourning.

New Improved Blue Cheer is going to be turned on right now.

Can we assume this is the end of Blue Cheer?
Never disbanded from 1966.

Wow, that's sad. Odd thing is, I hadn't listened to Blue Cheer in ages but yesterday while driving out of the blue I felt like singing Parchment Farm and Summertime Blues.

So this thread doesn't go to waste, let's actually have some Blue Cheer discussion.

Vincebus Eruptum is usually hailed as their best effort, and while it is their heaviest, I cannot say that it is my favorite. Sure you have some really hard rockin' tracks, some badass solos, and Dickie's best vocal performance, but the songs don't offer enough variation like its superior successor, Outsideinside. The compositions are varied, some songs are certainly quite heavy (Gypsy Ball, The Hunter, Babylon), but others take on a more relaxed, blissful feel a la "Sun Cycle" and "Feathers From Your Tree". Not to mention the riffs are just better.

And here comes my second favorite, the heavily underrated "New! Improved! Blue Cheer". Now, alot of people complain about the A side. Every track on there rules! They don't sound much (if anything) like what we'd be previously exposed to, but they're still high quality songs nonetheless. The Dylan cover is even better than the Stones cover from the previous album. The real highlight though is the B side. Holden really knows how to write a good song, but his solos are even better!

The only other albums I've heard are the other 70s ones, "Blue Cheer" "Oh, Pleasant Hope", and "The Original Human Being". I didn't care for them at all. They lost the charm of the lighter songs and just seemed derivative. I'll probably relisten to them a few more times, but until them my opinion remains low.

Has anyone heard the 80s, 90s, and most recent material? How is it?
