I 100% agree with the dude that said Tom's guitar tone on the Hellhammer demos. Fucking evil.

Here's one for ya, Kadath - Chasing the Devil. Just listen to the first song off that album and try not to shit your pants.

Entombed's Left Hand Path isn't all about chainsaws. It's also about a purring lioness guzzling on the bloddy entrails of a still alive gazelle and growling in deep satisfaction! Those guitars growl at you.

Candlemass on their s/t album FTW. Ye gods, that guitar tone was so unspeakably heavy.

^ Epicus Doomicus Metallicus and Nightfall are all absolutely essential doom metal albums. If you have to choose just one, go with Nightfall. Their 2005 s/t album has a decidedly more "modern" feel to it, but is also quite mindblowing and still as heavy and doomy as anything else Candlemass has ever released.

My favourite all time guitar tone for DM is Massacre's sound on From Beyond - it is so crunchy and heavy, the PERFECT sound which for me has never been bettered on any LP ever.
For BM it is without a doubt Dark Throne Under A Funeral Moon - so Lo-Fi and high pitched. This was the best sound I have ever heard on BM LP and suits the style of music down to a tee. CLASS indeed.

The whole production on this masterpiece sounds fucking deliriously good on vinyl, like it was made specifically for it.

I'm reviewing Soundgarden's Superunknown right now, and I must say the guitar tone(s) on this is / are fantastic. Bludgeoning, crisp, decimating, dreamy - it's all there and it's all wonderful.

I like either HUGE WALL OF SOUND tone like Bathory in "Nordland" or abrasively trebly, raw screechy like Be Persecuted or Bethlehem.

Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Amazing clean/rhythm/lead tones, all around amazing. They sound great live too!

I have always liked Maiden's tone on Somewhere in Time, sounds perfect to me. I also enjoy Obituary's tone on Slowly we Rot and World Demise. It fits what they are doing perfectly. I also think Napalm Death had a great guitar sound on Fear, Emptiness, Despair it sounds very crusty and grindy and what have you.

First four. They're all great and I'm not even a doom person.

This, but EDM and Ancient Dreams are more accessible, I think. Leave Tales of Creation for the end.

I certainly think Pig Destroyer needs more lovin' in this thread. Always dug their tone in their last three full-lenghts, especially Phantom Limb. Ripping, clear and evocative.

Darkspace is another display of ass-smashing heavyness, in my opinion. Mysterious, swirling and . Perfect fit for their music.

Shatraug of Horna has also perfected his guitar tone on Sanojesi Äärelle, clarity and ripping rawness in an equal mix.

Seconding the Portal-reply too. Audial madness.

diSEMBOWELMENT on "Transcendence into the Peripheral". sounds like a chainsaw going through half a dozen reverb pedals. the clean tone is also eerie as hell.

I really like Dismember's guitar tone. Has a razor sharp edge to it, something like a chainsaw sound. I have to mention Dystopia (the crust band). Their sound is awesome. Heavy and dismal, especially in the sludgey, slow parts.

I think Grave's debut is the best for the classic Swedish buzzsaw.
