Seems like some people here didn't know but Swedish death metallers Desultory are coming back. They are signed to Pulverized and are working on a new album, hopefully finished by November. I had brief e-mail contact with Thomas, the drummer, and he said they were to record it this summer and planned to be released by November.
I asked about the musical direction and he said:

Quote:
It will be more like Bitterness rather than Swallow The Snake. We are trying to incorporate a little bit of modern death metal and also a tiny bit of black metal.

I'm anxious to hear this. It took me a little longer to get into Bitterness but now I think it's great.

This sounds absolutely, ridiculously awesome.

I made the terrible, terrible mistake of selling off the Desultory catalog about 7 years ago when I was desperate for cash. I didn't realize then how difficult it would be to get a hold of this stuff again. I've got to get on that.

Looking very forward to this.

Bitterness is one of my favorite albums and Into Eternity and the demos are very cool, as well, so hopefully they can deliver.

I really love Bitterness and just got Into Eternity, literally, yesterday.

Desultory is a band that my brother (but mostly my brother) and I discovered entirely by accident. I came home from college and introduced him to our first Death Metal: Death's Symbolic and Morbid Angel's Covenant.

A couple weeks later, my brother was at an OnCue store (they no longer exist) and happened across some Death Metal-ish looking stuff in a discount bin for something like $2 a CD. He picked up some album from The Accused (which sucked), and Accidental Suicide's only album (which was atrocious) and Desultory's Bitterness--which kicked serious ass.

An inclusion of Black Metal influence, though? Don't know how I feel about that. Still, I'll likely pick this up when it's released.

Check on ebay for Into Eternity CD, Bitterness CD and if you have cash get the Forever Gone MLP too, else try to find the democompilation CD-bootleg "From Beyond The Visions Of Death" (easier to get hold of than the MLP).

Avoid Swallow The Snake under all circumstances.

Into Eternity is such a ripper of old Swedish Death Metal. Cool Sunlight production, Matti from Dismember on some guest vocals (best track of the album) and great great guitar riffing.

He specifically pointed out they were being very cautious about that, not making too blackened. I think it will only show in a slightly colder atmosphere than on Bitterness.

I think they will make an approach to black metal similar to the Unanimated's comeback album.

Me too and that makes me so much more anxious to hear it. I loved In The Light Of Darkness.

I just heard the song ''Into Eternity'' and wow! This is really good stuff, it has that specific Swedish sound I just couldn't imagine that this band was from America, for example.

Reminds me a bit of a rawer, better Dismember with a different vocal style.

To be honest, I never considered them to be amazing. They've got some decent songs here and there, but they just don't grab me like most death metal bands do.

When it´s qualitative like 'Bitterness', i definitely buy the album. They had a truly unique sound back in the days.

They were the first death metal band I really liked so I obviously think they are amazing but Desultorys first and second albums are hard to beat.

Actually it's not - Dismember is clearly a better band. Let's not get all ridiculous. Desultory is a fine band - their demos and "Into Eternity" are their best work. "Bitterness" is OK. They never recorded anything as monumental as "Like An Ever-Flowing Stream" or "The God That Never Was" though.

Into Eternity can easily stand up with Like An Everflowing Stream, it's just unappreciated. That says a lot because Like An... is a masterpiece by an awesome band. But in the long run Dismember have a stronger discography.

It's not as good to me - the lighter production and more thrash-derived riffing don't stand up to the overwhelming darkness (with just a hint of melody) on the 1st Dismember album. I still like it, don't get me wrong. It reminds me at times of the Utumno EP, although I also prefer Utumno over Desultory to be honest.

That's true - of course few bands can compete with Dismember on that level. They've been around a long time with few serious dips in quality, though there were a couple weak and uninspired albums in the middle.

Yeah Desultory have never been on the same level of heaviness as Dismember but I think they made up for it with the cold atmosphere. And Utumno makes Desultory seem as popular as Metallica. Truly a buried gem.

I'm with you on this one, still looking forward to hearing this new Desultory though.

my hopes are high for this, Into Eternity and Bitterness are some great hidden Swedish gems-gotta love em. and i'm glad to see an old, semi-obscure come back and try and do something

hopefully they don't smoke any of the shit they were smoking when they made STS though.

One of my favorite "gem" bands. They've always been a little more underground than a good host of bands in their league. Loved Into Eternity and Bitterness, but I can't same the same for Swallow The Trousersnake.

I can't wait for this. I've always lumped this band with Unanimated, even though I found out about Unanimated last year and Desultory only this year (aside from them playing different styles). Unanimated toppled the year with their returning album, and I can only assume Desultory doing the same.

This is great news.
Bitterness is a brilliant album. Swallow the Snake an utter disappointment. If they keep the energy of Biterness, this could be something.
