A teacher of mine is interested in knowing the top three best albums of certain genres. Those specifically being death metal and black metal, as they are more common

I already made my own list but I am interested in other peoples ideas as they may help influence my decision.
Post your opinion on either one genre or both, and lets try not to shoot down everybody else's opinion either, remember it is only musical tastes and opinions.

personaly I think covenent by morbid angle is the # 1 for death metal because they where the first death group under a major label.

Wow, only 3? That's just .. impossible.

might I add narrowing it down to three is really freaking hard so at least try to name some candidates in no order

However, they don't.
They cease to exist!

Anyways..
Personally, I think the list goes like this:

1 - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss - Burzum
2 - ...And Justice For All - Metallica
3 - Altars of Madness - Morbid Angel

What was happening during the time that you typed this? It is a mess.

Honestly, there is never going to be a top record for anything, because such things are far too subjective.

This I agree with for black metal, for a starter, that is.

Otherwise, a death metal album to go for has to be one by Bolt Thrower, hands down.

Very, very hard :) It is difficult to make a top 20, but top 3...

Anyway, here goes:
Death - Leprosy
Morbid Angel - Blessed Are The Sick
Cannibal Corpse - Tomb Of The Mutilated

Mayhem - De Misteriis
Emperor - In The Nightshade Eclipse
Immortal - Battles In The North

:)

hmm..

Death metal:
1) Hypocrisy - Osculum Obscenum, because it's just insane, and Masse sounds good for once.
2) Obituary - Slowly we rot, because of that old-school feel to it.
3) Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus, because of the awesome atmosphere behind the whole thing.

Black metal:
1) Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger, just because it's pure fucking black metal in its base form.
2) Immortal - Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism, for the reason see the reason for album number one + some epicness to it all.
3) Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, because of the incredible mix of black metal and ambient.

For death metal;
1. Scream Bloody Gore - Death
Really thrashy and has some excellent choruses. I enjoy the gore lyrics as well, I think it fits the album better than latter era Death lyrics would.
2. Clandestine - Entombed
Better than Left Hand Path IMO.
3. Effigy of the Forgotten - Suffocation
I've been listening to this for a while, and it tops anything else I've heard by Suffocation. Relentless brutality without becoming a parody of itself like so much of the new brutal death metal.

black:
1. A Blaze In the Northern Sky - Darkthrone
I changed by opinion of this one over time, and now like it the best of Darkthrone's classics. Instead of the absolute minimalism of Transylvanian Hunger it has a very headbangable quality to it.
2. De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas - Mayhem
Great classic black metal topped with the bizarre yet hypnotic vocals of Atilla. I especially enjoy the title track's vocal performance.
3. Dark Medieval Times - Satyricon
Such wonderful flute and guitar parts! When I first heard one of these interludes on the title track I was quite blown away.

Death Metal (Forgive my noob taste!)

1. Severed Survival - Autopsy: This is my all time favorite death metal album. It feels like a tank, and it sounds like a tank. The lyrics that are pretty much puked out help with the feeling too.

2. Litany - Vader: Man, this comes in very close with Autopsy. Totally different style, but it's much faster, and seems more aggressive, which fits more with my thrash oriented taste. Great album.

3. Consuming Impulse - Pestilence: A classic. I really don't know why I love this album so much. :(

Honorables~
Effigy of the Forgotten - Suffocation: Heavy album, with excellent guitar work.
Altars of Madness - Morbid Angel: Chapel of Ghouls!
Leprosy - Death: This album got me into death metal. (Along with Autopsy). I feel like this album is better than Scream Bloody Gore, but many disagree.
Random Bolt Thrower Album - Bolt Thrower: They are all equally awesome. Maybe some come on top of the others, but it's Bolt Thrower!

For death metal (it's so damn close when you get this high that ordering doesn't really matter):

1-ish). Immolation- Dawn of Possession

Given its high standing it's obviously one of my favorite albums. Churning, shifty and chaotic as death metal should be.

2-ish). Cryptopsy- None so Vile

Break-neck fast, punchy and fun.

3-ish). Morbid Angel- Altars of Madness

I considered my mind blown the first time I heard it.

For black metal (which I am maybe not so well-versed in):

1-ish). Dissection- Storm of the Lights Bane

Melodic yet strangely cold; amazing riffs, amazing vocals, amazing everything.

2-ish). Burzum- Hvis Lyset Tar Oss

Atonal, minimalism at its finest.

3-ish). Emperor- In the Nightside Eclipse

Way over the top, crushing, blasting, hard to take it all in even after the first fifty listens.

Death metal:

Demilich - Nespithe
Possessed - Seven Churches
Death - Human

Black metal:

Taake - Nattestid Ser Porten Vid
Sigh - Scorn Defeat
Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon

Kinda hard (well, impossible) to think of lists like these, especially when they are limited to mere three choices. Those are some of my favorites, anyways. (And sorry for just posting a list instead of elaborating).

it's because it is a fucking heavy bad-ass bloody slab of Death Metal.

along with Consuming Impulse i'd put Altars of Madness and Cause Of Death since those are really as old school as they come. i'd put Death but their/Chuck's early work doesn't really interest me.

Death Metal:

1. Death-"Leprosy". It has everything needed for a great album, good production, evil riffs, and some sinister growls thanks to Chuck (R.I.P.)

2. Cryptopsy-"None So Vile". This is the first album that I can honestly say raped me into submission.

3. Vital Remains-"Dechristianize". Somehow brutal riffs offset with ridiculous melodic leads works, and works damn well.

Black Metal:

1. Darkthrone-"Transilvanian Hunger". Speaks for itself.

2. Leviathan-"The Tenth Sublevel Of Suicide". Seeping with emotion, it just makes for a thoroughly great listen.

3. Anaal Nathrakh-"The Codex Necro". Speed, speed, vitriol (as well as V.I.T.R.I.O.L.), and more speed.

Death Metal:

Autopsy- Mental Funeral
Yogth Sothoth- Abominations of the Nebulah Mortiis (just came out in 08, yet it slaughters almost any classic...)
Cryptopsy- None So Vile

Doom Metal

Candlemass- Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Wormphlegm- In an Excruciating Way (demo)
Sabbath- Master of Reality

Black:

The Ruins of Beverast- Rain Upon the Impure
Mutiilation- Remains of a Dead, Cursed Soul
Mayhem- De Mystriis Dom Sathanas (that how you spell it??!?)

Traditional/Epic/Power

Manilla Road- Spiral Castle
Pagan Altar- Mythical and Magical
Judas Priest- Sad Wings of Destiny

Folk:

Tyr- Eric the Red
Legend- From the Fjords
Summoning- Oath Bound (technically black metal, but wayyy more on the folk side of things.)

EDIT: didn't know you only wanted death/black.

Oh well, I'll keep the others up for good measure ;)

My personal top 3 Black Metal albums:
1 - Nokturnal Mortum - Nechrist - Alright, I'll say this first, I don't give two shits what the lyrics concern as long as the music is good, and the music on this album is (IMHO) pure transcendent beauty. The folk parts always come in at perfect times to balance out the raw, harsh black metal. Plus, and you can call it a gimmick all you want, but I simply love the catchy melodies of folk music, so it makes this album even better in my eyes. I was simply blown away by this album the first time I listened to it, and it grows on me even more with every listen.

2. Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas - I admit I do have a soft spot for this one due to it being the first black metal album I gave a proper listen, but that does not take away from its classic status. This is also unique to me because the riffs are more memorable than the complete atmosphere of the album, pretty much the complete opposite of what black metal music is meant to be. Euronymous' solo on Freezing Moon is definitely one of my favorite solos, ever. Attila seems to be in his own little world, but definitely provides an impossible-to-ignore performance. This album is not greater than sum of its parts, so to speak, but that is not a bad thing at all in this case.

3. Evilfeast - Lost Horizons of Wisdom - Burzum influence is clear here, but I think this tops the minimalistic style Varg pioneered due to 1. GrimSpirit's vocals are much better 2. Synths are utilized more effectively in creating the cold, grim atmosphere this type of black metal is known for.

For some reason, whenever I try to logically compile my favorite albums for a particular genre, my mind just goes blank. It's as though I've literally forgotten everything i've ever listened to. But anyways, here's mine:

Death Metal:
----Altars of Madness
----Seven Churches
----The Sound of Perseverance

Black Metal:
----Transilvanian Hunger
----Black Metal
----Filosofem

Death Metal - Number 1 is Death - Scream Bloody Gore because it more-or-less invented death metal and has an awesome, gritty sound
Number two is Dark Heresy - Abstract Principles taken to there Logical extremes. Not very famous (No review on this site!) but its hands down one of the best albums Ive ever heard. Number three is Autopsy - mental Funeral

Black Metal - #1 is Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger - for obvious reasons, it defined the genre. The raw, mid-tempo, hypnotic saatnism works so well, everyone should own this album.
#2 is Mayhem - Live in Leipzig. Most would prefer De Mysterries De Sathanas, but personally, i think live in Leipzig is the best release by the best Black metal group ever. #3 is Burzum - Filosfem. Ambient black metal neevr got better.

Hey, we can do Thrash too?! Awesome!

1. Terrible Certainty - Kreator: Many people write this album off because of the production or whatever, but I really like the production, and the riffs in general. Sure, it's not as br00tal trve as PtK, but Terrible Certainty seems more "mature" and a bit more technical.

2. Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? - Megadeth: Man, I can't describe how much I love this album. Timeless classics with the trademark riffage and genius of Dave Mustaine. Anybody who doesn't like it can shove it up their ass.

3. Swallowed in Black - Sadus: Technical thrash at its best in my opinion. The riffage and speed in this album really can't be compared to in most respects. + it has Digiorgio on bass :)

Fuck. I was intoxicated when I read it, so I misunderstood it.

Anyways, here are my top 3 again.

1 - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss - Burzum
Because the epic mother fucking songs from this are possibly the best BM songs I've ever heard. And the ambient song, Tomhet, is completely mesmerizing and soothing, I can't help but love it.

2 - The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide - Leviathan [even if its 70+minutes]
Dark, evil, hypnotic, depressing, very droned out and always interesting throughout the whole album. I love it. One of my favourite albums of all time.

3 - Fucking Your Creation - Dodsferd
Reminds me ALOT of Mutiilation, but more hateful, better production, depressing when need be, and the vocals are fucking awesome!!

And for my DM list it will go...

1 - Altars of Madness - Morbid Angel
Why? Everything about this album is great. The black-esque vocals, but still pretty death-like at the same time.. the thrash-y riffage but brutallity of death metal riffing and it's just awesome every listen. Only Morbid Angel album I like, and I love it.

2 - Blasphemies Made Flesh - Cryptopsy
Fucking HEAVY, sickening, and evil. Lord Worm's vocals are fucking insane, and the songs are just amazing. No other way to describe it.
Besides, how can you NOT like that bass?

3 - Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious - Carcass
Long, epic songs, with some of the best riffs ever.
Must I say anything at all, really? After all... it is fucking Carcass!
