Metallica - 'Wherever I May Roam'

Decided to listen to this track on its own since the main riff is stuck in my head. Say what you will about this band or this album; but this song is excellent. Snaking, simple yet interesting and memorable riffs, one of Hammett's best lead slots (balancing the wah with actual composition and playing for longer without noodling) and one of James' last great vocal performances for a long time. It even has an atmosphere - and a slow, foreboding and epic one at that - which is a rarity for this album and most of this band's future output. It also manages to go on for nearly 7 minutes without overstaying its welcome. I don't know how this track is perceived amongst listeners so I can't say if its underrated or not but regardless, it's a gem.

'Rover, wanderer, nomad, vagabond, call me what you will.'

Oh yeah, the lyrics are cool too.

I'm in a minority here I know but Metallica is a great record and that tune is one of the reasons. Great riff, vocals, bass, drums. A band performing as a well oiled machine.

Slayer - "213"

One of the outstanding tracks from 'Divine Intervention', an album that is arguably Slayer's last finest effort. This song works similar in framework to 'Dead Skin Mask', it has a slow to mid-tempo and continue the serial killer theme they were high on back then.

Awesome track, man.

The Devin Townsend Project - Traveller

Great stuff.

Immolation - "Burn With Jesus"

Now this is what heavy, blasphemous death metal is all about! A ripping track that should send you banging your head in milliseconds.

Renaissance - The Vultures Fly High

So many prog bands fail to write memorable songs, but on this album at least, they absolutely nailed it. The soundscapes they create are incredibly vivid, and basically every hook and chorus melody is fantastic.

Nuclear Assault - "Critical Mass"

From arguably Nuclear Assault's best album. A thrashy song about the environment.

Darkspace - Dark 3.12

I've decided to listen to the album that this song is on due to the reviewers high praise of this release. To be quite honest, I'm not really impressed at this moment. Maybe it'll get better later into the album.

I'm pretty sure this band can do no wrong, the last minute of this song is so catchy.

Converge - Eye of the Quarrel

Not a note out of place on this album. A clinic in heavy, noisy songwriting genius.

Edguy- The Pharaoh

Mandrake is a super nostalgic album for me. It's the first Edguy record I ever owned after hearing so many of their songs online. I bought it the week it came out, and listened to it non-stop until the following spring.
Funny story; I had just gotten a pup at the time, and that pup grew up on Edguy. :)

It is a good record, arguably the best thing Motley Crue ever recorded.

I thought that liking the Black Album was a view by a majority of Metalheads... or am I just thinking of the casual fans.

Iron Maiden - Another Life

Classic album back and front... pure speed and fun!

To date I've never actually been able to finish The Black Album. Just kinda boring for me I guess.

Watching Patton Oswalt's "Annihilation" special on Netflix. Really good.

True, but here its kind of slammed a lot as generic hard rock. Metallica gets a lot of heat on the Internet forums.

Bolzer - Entranced by the Wolfshook

This band has always been a bit hit or miss for me, but this song is incredible. That opening salvo seems to shake the very earth, and the way they bring it back after a prolonged slow section is brilliant.

It is insultingly boring. Aside from "Of Wolf and Man," "The Unforgiven," and, let's face it, "Enter Sandman," that album has nothing of worth on it.

It's weird because I enjoy Load, Death Magnetic and Hardwired, but The Black Album just doesn't do much for me for whatever reason. Just too restrained and safe I suppose.

Pantera - "It Makes Then Disappear"

Moving at slow to mid-tempo this song trudges along while detaching your skin from your bones with its sharp riffs. Dimebag's guitar solo fits right in as it slithers its way around the rhythm.

I agree entirely. I like Load a hell of a lot more than I like the s/t. For me, I think its the fact that none of the tracks really seem to stand out much. Even the thrashier Holier Than Thou doesn't evoke any kind of energy out of me. It just feels kind of...lifeless, I guess is the word I'm looking for?

Wolf - Curse You Salem

Love these guys. Good, old fashioned Swedish heavy metal.

I'll say, while that album is one of my least favourite by them, Wherever I May Roam is one of my favourite Metallica songs. I think it's extremely dynamic.

NP: Summoning- Night Fell Behind

One of my favourite tracks from the new record (Which hasn't really stuck with me yet).

Black Majesty - Lost Highway

These guys were one of the most dependable PM bands. Just no bullshit, riffy power metal with killer melodies and badass attitude. Hope they come back with something good soon.

Alkemyst - It's Time

I apparently bought this years ago and forgot... this is pretty goddamn good power metal. Sweet choruses, crisp, speedy riffs and good production. Fucking solid. I gotta try the other album.

Helstar - Winds of War (A Distant Thunder)

The perfect closing song to this album. It's nuanced and emotional where most of the rest of the album is out for blood. Wonderful stuff, tons of feel and a super satisfying release of tension.

Barren Earth - On Lonely Towers

I came back to this after listening to the new Hamferð (which is a good album in its own right) and I think Jón Aldará's voice fits Barren Earth a bit better. Probably because he has many tricks up his sleeve and the music here is not predominantly atmospheric like with Hamferð.

Megadeth - "Sweating Bullets"

Absolutely the worst Megadeth song ever written. I would blame it to the laughable spoken word-style vocals that Mustaine employs here. While not a vocal prodigy, Mustaine usually chooses appropriate vocals that fits the music he creates. For this song though, the results are cringe-worthy.
