Sabaton - En livstid i krig

The Swedish language is so beautiful, and I say that as a Norwegian. It can be so straight-forward and poetic at the same time.

Theatre of Tragedy also had a really great middle electronica period. They're the band I always think of when that kind of style change comes to mind.

I used to be one of those guys who hated the change, but in my "later years" I've come to really love them. Especially Musique. That album has a real "Rammstein-esque" grit and heaviness to it.

Moonspell - Vampiria

The singer sounds kinda like Pete Steele on this track. And that should be a good thing.

Paradise Lost - Permanent Solution

From their Depeche Mode era. A billion percent different from the early and later parts of their career, but then again, I've always been fascinated by the mid-periods of all these 90s-borne gothic/death-doom bands where they started getting really into electronica and synthpop.

And all of them they did a great job there, from Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride to Moonspell, Morgoth and Tiamat.

Both PL and Tiamat were doing okay around 1997, but their doom/death outputs were so much better. I think only The Gathering were changing for the better once they stopped playing that style.

NP: King Diamond - Arrival

Not as good as classic Mercyful Fate but still worthy. Andy LaRocque's shredding is absolutely fantastic.

Opeth - Forest of October

Definitely the best song from their first two albums (although I'll always have a soft spot for Black Rose Immortal). I've always said that Opeth on Orchid and Morningrise didn't really write songs; Rather, they wrote individual segments of music that they just stitched together into big compositions. This one is definitely the most cohesive whole out of them all.

Running Wild- Victory.

Really, this album isn't nearly as bad as many folks say it is. OK sure the production is kinda flat and mechanical and the drum machine sucks, but as far as post-90's Running Wild goes, this is quality shit. "Fall of Dorkas", "Tsar", "The Hussar" and the title track are all sheer power metal might!

Thanks to bad health i got another incredibly satisfying evening, music wise. I decided too listen stuff i overlooked for years and i'm quite mind blown

Queen - Prophet's Song

I kinda snobbed Queen in the past, but i'm really regretting it. This is so epic, is staggering!
...also i think that Quorthon tought the same: some parts on Blood and Iron sound inspired by this song

Voivod - The Prow

Both upbeat, dark and otherwordly, i think that this song is the star of Angel Rat, alongside the title track. I'm starting to believe that this album is one of their best, and i've listened to it far less than it deserves

Tribulation - Nightbound

I already liked a lot this album, but after a re-listen i'm becoming sure that this is way more than a good record.
This song in particular contains some of the classiest guitar work i've ever heard, and manages to be both straightforward and laid back at the same time, listen to believe :)

Acrosome - "IV" from Non-Pourable Lines

Loosely labeled as post-black metal, this album is a bit all over the place. Not a terrible listening experience by any means, but it definitely is a bit disjointed.

Goethes Erben - Spuren im Schnee

They call it "Neue Deutsche Todeskunst". The early days of german gothic music with a heavy focus on dark poetic lyrics

Assumption - Absconditus

FFO Evoken or just good death/doom/funeral doom in general. Just like Evoken it uses psychedelics to create different atmospheres and I like that a lot.

Underrated band! I'm most familiar with "Death Set the Beginning of My Journey". Depressive but so ANGRY.

Speaking of which...

Thy Art is Murder - Shadow of Eternal Sin

I remember how much I shat upon TAIM a year ago. Since then, I've started liking them a lot and eventually seeing them live which was pretty fucking amazing

Serum Dreg - Rotten Pillar/Lustful Vengeance

On my second spin of this album "Lustful Vengeance" now. I really liked it at as whole the first time (the whole thing is only 22 minutes), but it didn't have a stand-out track to me (yet).

Aorlhac - La Révolte des Tuchins

Anyone else get strong Dissection vibes from this? A bit less frantic than they were, but the vibe and spirit is there in spades.

Carach Angren - Lingering in an Imprint Haunting

I almost wrote this off as too over the top and theatrical. But "Where the Corpses..." is growing on me.

This is definitely better than FATE by a long shot, and I quite liked FATE.

Aes Dana - Les traces de la branche rouge. Deep folky black, heavily influenced by Heol Telwenn, but less cheesy.

(+1 on Aorlhac by the way, Subrick. But no Dissection vibe for me.)

Best fucking song she's ever done by far. She'd be so much better doing vocal-based dark folk like this, because it's absolutely beautiful.
