Reverend Bizarre - The Wandering Jew

This track is long, yet not a second TOO long. I found this band around 'Harbinger of Metal', and 'Strange Horizon' got me first. But the real jewels are this, and 'From the Void'.

Cauldron - Together as None

WOW. What a 80's glam THROWBACK this is. I can't even pretend I don't fucking love this. I wish this had come out in the early summer.

Azaghal Nemesis, to be followed by a couple with Finnish titles that I'm too lazy to type.
Their later works, esp Nemesis, sound a bit, to my ears, like Watain with better songwriting.

Maligner - Lust for Fire

Swedish death/thrash. Their debut full length, Attraction to Annihilation, is fucking sick!

Lantern - Cleansing of the Air

Bought the album this is from shortly after it was released but am just now giving it the listening time that it deserves. Enjoying it more than Below. They upped the melodicism of their compositions without compromising the darkness or heaviness of their work. Unique but firmly rooted in oldschool. Lots of Celtic Frost and Hellhammer-isms to be found through out the run time too.

Loretta Lynn - Women's Prison

This is utterly amazing. Just pure soul and song-craft. Arresting.

Skinless- Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead.

Real entertaining brutal DM, like a darker, grimier Cannibal Corpse. I also particularly like the sound bits the accompany most of the songs. Usually I find this practice annoying, but the variety (everything from Patton to Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and even an episode of MST3K make an appearance) gives the album personality and shows off the band's sense of humor.

Black Sabbath - Letters from Earth

Been getting a huge kick out of this album again and it only made me wonder what could have been if this line-up continued under the Black Sabbath name. Dio sounds like a vicious beast on this one and the overall style is as sludgy and heavy as Sabbath's 70s stuff.

My favorite Dio era album and one of their best works.

Black Sabbath - Cross Purposes

Martin strikes it out of the park again. Heaviness and melody and his performance - magic.

Count Raven - True Revelation

I was previously turned off by the overt Ozzy-isms of the vocals on a Count Raven track that I heard. Thus, it came as a pleasant surprise that none of those annoying Ozzy clone vocals are evident on this track. Christian Linderson's voice is adequately doomy but doesn't owe too much Ozzy inspiration as later Count Raven songs (as done by his replacement Fodde). And this song simply crushes like a pile of granite being slowly thrown at you at close range.

The Gathering - Shot to Pieces

I'm really enjoying "if_then_else". It's somewhere between their "Mandylion"/"Nighttime Birds" sound and what they did on "How to Measure a Planet?", the album previous to this one. The results are pretty damn spectacular.

Saw them at a fest last weekend and they were great live so I grabbed this vinyl. Good straight up metal.

Immortal - Wrath From Above

"Damned in Black" is one of my least favorite Immortal albums but it does contain my most favorite song of theirs. That song is 'Wrath From Above'. This song is beautifully constructed as it blasts out of the speakers on the get go and then changes tempo at various points of the song and highlights the icy cold riffs that has been the trademark of the band. Brilliant!

I know what you're talking about. I even think that Immortal's later albums have mostly been a hit-or-miss affair, having some real burners (yeah - "Wrath from Above", "Damned in Black", "Solarfall", Tragedies Blows at the Horizon" and "All Shall Fall" come to mind) and too many fillers where I even can't remember their names anymore...

oh, as for contributing:

NP: Satan - Doomsday Clock

These old guys still sound fresh. Have only gotten into them recently, because I couldn't handle the trebly sound in the past. I got over that a little by now to realize that "Life Sentence" is a pretty amazing album.

Draconian - Silent Winter

I forgot just how much I liked the melodic hooks these guys could craft when they were on-point. I still say "Death, Come Near Me" is their magnum opus and one of the finer songs in the gothic/doom metal genre.

Decapitated - Kill the Cult

Not a popular opinion but this song fucking rocks. Nice solo too. I have only really listened to the debut time to remedy that.

Megadeth - Diadems

Megadeth has a knack for contributing songs to movie soundtracks. This song comes from Demon Knight and it's one of my favorite non-album tracks of theirs. I like the slow build up until the pace picks up and goes relatively faster until it climaxes and slows down again.

Wolfmother - Colossal

After 15 years of metal and 10 years of punk, I have finally discovered the beauty of hard rock. This band is basically Led Zeppelin's and Sabbath's lovechild.

Iron Maiden - Brighter than a Thousand Suns

Edging in on the end of Bruce's autobiography, so I'm revisiting a bunch of his stuff chronologically. You can really see how they came through the years and how they shed expectations, etc. This album was always odd but powerful. Real intense heaviness, if inaccessible at times.

Nidhoggr - Ravens Over the Road of Kings

Long time hunting the demo, and now I found it on cd. Under 20 minutes of playing time, so you can spin this 10 times in a row.

While Heaven Wept - Vessel

After knowing about this band for YEARS, I finally gave them a listen and I am in love with this album! This track has a wonderful chorus (much like the rest of the album) and sublime guitar melodies.

Signum Regis - Unfold The Mystery

Too bad they just announced their singer's departure from the band. They've had a couple different singers over the years but I thought Mayo's vocals fit really well with the band's style. I look forward to hearing who will fill his shoes though.
