Korpiklaani - Aalon alla

They're always so much better when they stick to more serious subject matters sung in finnish. So far this new album is a far cry from the BEER BEER BEER days a lot of people associate Korpiklaani with. Im only at track 3 so far, but this is tastefully written folk metal. I'm liking it.

Yes, the drum machine sounds weird at times, but, RIFFS.

Whitehouse - Great White Death

Don't know why, but I've always had an affinity for experimental music, including noise, drone, industrial, etc.

This just really hits the spot right now.

On a side note, I need to discover more noise shit.

Led Zeppelin - IV

Now I got the album title right. :) Don't know what kept me away from this for so long. Maybe the singer was one reason. Always liked strong vocalists like Byron and Gillan more. But yeah, this is still legendary. Where is that fucking stairway, want to find it.

Black Majesty - Wars Greed

Honestly the PM album to beat this year. Insanely good.

Eh I dunno, I just started my second listen and it's certainly worlds better than Cross of Thorns (which was just mega boring), but between the oddly wonky production, the vocals sounding more strained than I remember them sounding (though he still doesn't necessarily sound bad), and the songs not really grabbing me right away, I'd still notch it quite a few pegs under the early-year standouts from Frozen Crown and Thaurorod. Most Black Majesty albums are growers for me though so I'm more than willing to give this the requisite number of spins to burrow into my memory.

The production is the only thing that really holds it back for me. Honestly the songs are some of the best they've ever done, just no filler and constant barrages of melody and heaviness, actually pretty complex compared to their other recent ones. It's the same feeling I got when I heard In Your Honor a decade ago and that blew me away after the disappointing Tomorrowland. I don't think the vocals sound strained - he sounds awesome to me. I just wish they hadn't buried him in the mix for whatever weird reason. I didn't like the advance single when I first heard it, but it and the whole album have been growing on me with each play. I keep thinking of standouts but then I realize I'd just be listing like half of the songs.

Second listen finished. It's fine really, but I still think it starts and ends much stronger than most of the middle. The first three tracks + War's Greed are great and Reach Into Darkness is a fantastic closer, but pretty much everything in between is a blur for me. Still good, I'd recommend it, but they're always going to be chasing the dragon of Silent Company to me.

Yeah the first two will always be their best, but every once in a while they pull out a real fucking barn burner like In Your Honor or this album. Solid fucking band.

"Lonely" and "Always Running" are actually two of my favorites on this one. And "Hideaway" - see what I mean?

Kendrick Lamar - Element

Such a great work. Super soulful and yet hard-edged.

Dio - Sunset Superman

Fuck, this main riff sounds like something Riot would come up with circa Thundersteel. Way better than the 1983-1985 material of this band.

Paradox - Massacre of the Cathars

Nice, intricate thrash. For years I was only familiar with 'Product of Imagination', but now I can say that 'Heresy' is a clear improvement.

The Sisters of Mercy - Black Planet

"First and Last and Always" is such a perfect album - great atmosphere and great songwriting. Also, Andrew Eldritch said there'd be another Sisters album if Trump was elected, so uh...I'm still waiting, dude. Hurry up and make goth great again.

Man, Silent Company was a favorite of mine back around the time it came out, but I stopped listening to it at some point. I'm not sure why, and I think it might be time to revisit!

NP: Therion - Symphony Masses

The last Therion album that's worth a damn. It's an oddball, but I absolutely love it.

Haha yeah I’ve been waiting for Eldritch to deliver on that promise as well. In his defense he probably figured (like most of us) there was no way the dipshit would actually win.

NP: Ordo Equilibrio - Reaping the Fallen...The First Harvest

All too fitting this gloomy autumn morn.

Traitors Gate - Devil Takes the High Road EP
Virtue - We Stand to Fight Compilation

Both great NWOBHM releases, although I think I like Devil Takes the High Road a little bit more.

Plainride - Life on Ares

Catchy and fun stoner rock. I'm not sure where the divide between stoner rock and stoner metal is, but these guys can riff, and their guitar tone is pretty heavy.

Freak Kitchen - Move

1) Freak Kitchen is grossly underrated.

2) "My old man stuck seventeen candles up a poor slut's butt / Well done dad" is the best opening line to a song in music history.

3) Not to promote any wild conspiracies or anything... but has anybody ever seen Mattias Ecklund and Buckethead in the same room together?

I'm on a streak of random outrageously good stuff

Pagan Altar - Flight of the Witch Queen

Doomsword - The Fulminant

Warlord - Aliens

Seriously, how can a guitarist can be this inspired?

Looks like USPM is still alive and well, and here's one of the bands carrying that movement alongside bands like Eternal Champion, Sacral Rage, etc.

Fireleaf - Faceless

Goddamn this goes hard. Just megaheavy stomping guitars and some of the best new PM vocals in ages. One of my favorite recent albums - hoping for another one soon.
