Ekaterina Velika - Aut

Classic Yugoslav post-punk.

Cloven Hoof - Astral Rider (from A Sultan's Ransom)

NIIIIIIGHT RIDERS ON THE ASTRAL PLANES! God I haven't played this album in forever. It's a masterpiece, full-stop. If you love Satan, you love this.

Wintersun - The Forest Seasons

This is pretty bad so far. Don't have time to hear the entire thing right now, but it sounds like the kind of overwrought, bells and whistles songwriting Jari was known for, except slightly less gaudy and in your face about it, which makes it sound just sorta directionless and confused. It doesn't really evoke much of anything and the disparate sections just kind of feel mashed together. His aesthetic seems to just be 'more is better' with no actual cohesion or defining idea. Guess this is what happens when you let studio tricks and production value be the crowning achievement of your music...

It's like, if you want to do classical-style soundscapes that are long and flowing, sure, but shitty melodeath growling and clicky metal drums in the middle of that aren't an improvement. The writing itself is just very dull too.

The choruses of that album make me literally explode: Notre Dame, 1000 Nights, Highlander.. perfect for highway driving

Manowar - Mountains

Monstrous chorus here, worth every second of the mellow parts

Carcass - Heartwork

Haven't spun this record in a long while, but I wanted to after hearing Surgical Steel and really enjoying it. I forgot how goddamn catchy it is. Carcass tend to be heralded mostly for their grind era stuff, but I love their melodeath sound.

Soulmass - Chronicles of the Abysswalker, off Despairing Fates

For a death metal band inspired by Dark Souls, this is remarkably subpar. It's not awful, but it sure is pretty generic, and universally fails to mantain musical momentum. Like, usually a song will start with a pretty awesome riff right off the bat, and then just... sort of peter out. Like an ember. Because Dark Souls jokes!

The Haunted - In Vein

Kind of gave up on this band after the second record but fuck the debut is some angry shit. A lot of Pantera in the vocals but it works well here.

Pagan Altar - Mythical and Magical

In light of news about the new album, I'm working my way back through their incredible, though short, discography.

Temple of Void - "Savage Howl"

Remember Runemagick? Ever wish they kept the same sound they had on the Enter the Realm of Death album? Don't worry, because Temple of Void has you covered.

I bought the first Temple of Void full length based on their sound and the Runemagick comparisons, but the album is not all I was hoping it would be. A lot of repetition in the riffs and song structures. Only thing that stands out is "Rot in Solitude," for the closing section that mirrors the lyrics quite well.

Three Leg Dog - Red Sun

Estonian, Kyuss-ish rockin' - good stuff.

Alice Cooper - Sanctuary

Brutal Planet is just a masterpiece. I'd go as far to say it has the best lyrics of Alice's career, and musically, it's top 3 for sure. Also his heaviest record by a mile, and annihilates every industrial/nu-metal band of the era. I love this album so much.

+1. Love that record.

Jordablod - Upon My Cremation Pyre

Only one listen down and I'm hugely impressed. I thought i'd get standard Swedish style black metal lite, but this was much much more. This hands down has the best lead guitar I've heard on a black metal album in forever. Slow, endless shredding almost in the vein of epic/trad metal, but with tons of dark atmosphere and fast tremolo leads. The slow parts have a really loose and jangly sound, kinda like DSO if the rigid technicality was replaced with a jammy vibe. This is like meloblack, atmospheric/ritual BM and post-black all wrapped up in an epic package. Never would have expected to have a potential BM AOTY.

Excalion - Dream Alive

Now that I have the real CD and not just internet streams with commercials in between, this is a fantastic album. Incredible work of power metal, brilliant songcraft and melodicism. 2017 is such a great year for PM so far.

A great song from what I think is an underrated album. Sure it's not The Call of the Wretched Sea but The Divinity of Oceans has a lot to sink your teeth into.

I must listen to all their albums properly. Last one grew on me GREATLY.

(2011) Shining - VII: Född förlorare on my way to work.
I like even the "popy Shining".

Demigod - Dead Soul

The ominous melodies are the main reason why I love this band. Demilich have them, too, but the riffs' sheer eccentricity overshadows them.

Orden Ogan - Gunmen

I get a strong Gamma Ray vibe from this. I remember seeing them once live (around 2011 or 2012) and they were both quite boring and misplaced (opening for Tiamat, dafuq)... however, this ain't half bad, it has both sugary melodies and decent heaviness.

(2012) Shining - Redefining Darkness and (2013) Shining - 8 ½ - Feberdrömmar i vaket tillstånd on my way back from work.
The second one is quite useless till Black Industrial Misery.

Destruction - The Ritual

Thrash Anthems II shows just how good the deep cuts of the Destruction discography are. None of the selection would make most people's Destruction songs shortlist and yet everything on here is killer. Better production on the re-records this time too.

Have been rocking out to that, and, really, the entire album for the last week. I bought it years ago and was upset that they'd lost the whale-esque heaviness, shelved it for all this time, but randomly decided to give it another chance again recently. And it is pretty damn good! I realize the "drunk monk" vocals are very much a part of funeral doom, and while I don't love 'em, I can deal with 'em.

Pagan Altar - The Lords of Hypocrisy

I'm not quite as well versed in this album as Judgement or Mythical and Magical, but man, it's still top tier doom/heavy/NWOBHM.
