Emperor - "With Strength I Burn"

One of the best tracks from Emperor's landmark "Anthems..." album.

Metallica- Whiplash

Man, Lars trying to double bass at the beginning of this is really ineffective.

Doomentor - Undead Rising

This band really reminds me of those 90's doom/death/black/atmospheric bands in the way that I can hear many influences popping up in different songs. So far I'm getting reminded of early Rotting Christ, early Tiamat as well as Blood Fire Death Bathory on one track even. Pretty cool!

Nevermore - The Politics of Ecstasy

Took long enough but I've finally come to really like this album. Tense, pummeling, consistently aggressive and searing, at times haunting and somewhat mechanical/industrial in feel. I've not heard a lot like it, and I'd say it's my second favourite Nevermore album after This Godless Endeavour. Not much else by them has clicked for me though.

Rush - One Little Victory

The original mix was so horrid glad they fixed it up as much as they could.

Burzum - Spell of Destruction

I love how the 2nd riff sounds like a theme from a horror movie.

Grim Reaper - Dead On Arrival

Rip roaring NWOBHM... just one of many from an era of new found creativity.

Metallica - "The Wait"

One of Metallica's excellent covers. They really made this song their own by applying those thick, chunky riffs that were absent from the original.

Steel Attack - When You Dream

Man, I just cannot get into the Steel Attack records past the first two. There was an innocence/inexperience in those records that I just love. Plus, the original vocalist "Steve Steel" is where it's at, for me.

Blind purchase and I'm liking it more and more with every listen.

I must be the only person on the planet that loves the original mix. It made them sound so metal!

Blind Guardian - Somewhere Far Beyond

Found the used CD for $9. The cover of "Spread Your Wings" is hilarious

Supreme Pain - Towards Hell

Massive death metal, band is not really active anymore, but three albums they've put out are all good.

Another great overlooked album from the NWOBHM Movement!

Runemagick - Chthonic Temple Smoke

Nobody does a good build up and doomy crush like these guys. You can get lost in the waves of their weird, dark shit.

Pagan Altar - Lords of Hypocrisy

Just think what might have come if they had released this back when they wrote it in the early 80's.

Prong - Primitive Origins

Where it all began for this legendary NY band. Early Prong music is so great back when they played proper crossover/thrash metal. This and Force Fed are my faves by them.

Primordial - "End of All Times (Martyrs Fire)"

One of my favorites on The Gathering Wilderness, along with... most of the rest of the album, really.

Nuclear Assault - Pounder EP

This shits on Third World Genocide so much. I was hoping for an equally good follow up LP but they've only released a bunch of live albums since then.

What do you think of it now, then?

NP: Negative Plane - A Church in Ruin

Blackened metal with tons of quality riffs, spitting vocals and occult atmosphere. I dig it.

Well, when Medusa was released I was deeply dissapointed cos' I've been their fan since Symbol of Life. I felt this latest album was a rush job and safe play. And that I disapprove from any band whatsoever. But Medusa grew upon me, steadly and slowely. As always, I need to be in particular mood for albums forged like this one, and I was while taking a long walk on a cold and chilly winter day through abandoned streets. I just like that crawling and haunted atmosphere, especially on the closing track.

Sunn O))) - Hunting & Gathering

Truly CRUSHING and this is probably the most traditionally structured song in their entire discography.

Blood Feast - The Future State of Wicked

One of the best thrash releases from last year. Another example of an old school band showing the new kids on the block how it's done right.

Black Sabbath - Die Young

Even for Dio, this song is almost impossibly good. I've been listening to this album for years, and that climax still makes my spine tingle.

Had another one of those evenings when everything i listen is extremely satisfying! :) Highlights were:

Sacramentum - Far Away from the Sun

Melodic black is one of the most hit or miss genres for me, but this monster i've re-discovered hits hard! Glorious, unstoppable riffs for days

Pagan Altar- Cry of the Banshee

The solo sends shivers down my spine, extraordinary!

Sisters of Mercy - Amphetamine Logic

80's goodness, love the synth in the chorus :)

^ "Cry of the Banshee" is a damn near perfect song on a near perfect album.

Tarot - Follow the Blind

Even trying to describe how cool this band is is near impossible. So fucking unique and savagely aggressive and melodic.

Black Wizard - Livin' Oblivion (2018)

Stoner doom metal from Canada that is less derivative than most in the genres.

The Great Die-Oxygenation

The new EP by Derek Roddy's technical death metal band band The Great Die.

Crazy to think that this guy makes more money breeding snakes than being a world class extreme metal drummer (the gold standard of extreme metal drumming, IMO).

Nonetheless, sounds like something of a hybrid between his Serpents Rise project, his work with Hate Eternal, and late period Deeds Of Flesh.

Check it.
