While Heaven Wept - Vast Oceans Lachrymose

This was actually a little ahead of its time for 2009 - this kind of genre blending, mixing in some prog, doom and some other sounds, would seem to become more prevalent in the mid 2010s... a more expansive, eclectic mix rather than strict genre adherence. A lot of really moving stuff. A bit of John Arch stylings in the ornate vocal lines and way they mesh with the music. Some nicely catchy stuff and some pummeling, aggressive riffs that are pretty unusual for the more weepy, wistful style they play. All in all really well put-together, very cohesive as an album.

Solstice - Lamentations

Second full listen - this is really well-written, just tight, and the riffs have that above-and-beyond sort of quality, a lethal heaviness and aggression leavened with dark melody... this whole scene of 90s and '00s metal, between them, WHW, Slough Feg, Twisted Tower Dire and others, was so good.

Both are favorites of mine, but the WHW is especially awesome. Indeed, the mix of prog, doom, melancholy, and grandeur made them a unique band.

Yeah, I go back to Vast Oceans every few years and it's always so good... a really original piece of metal.

Necrot - Lifeless Birth

Needed a good fucking pummeling listen - this hits the spot man.

November’s Doom - “Amid Its Hallowed Mirth”
On a doom kick lately in anticipation of the new My Dying Bride.

ND isn’t spoken of enough. They’ve a highly impressive catalogue of albums.
Not a bad one in the bunch, and a perfect complement to MDB.

Graveland - "The Time of Revenge"
The 'special' screams in this have to be some of the most memorable in the history of a very, very screamy genre.

Windir - Arntor
Forgot how ridiculously epic-sounding some parts of this album are. Yeesh! Very cool formula.

Motorowl – This House has no Center

If you like doom, some Anathema after their death doom phase, psychedelic rock and "The Least we can do is Wave to Each Other"… you probably won't like this, but you'll likely like this if you like a mash of those and similar elements.

Clean Passage
No Center

Not metal but related because of the doom influence. Refreshingly wayward but very accessible.

Embrace - Descendence

Raw, riff-orientated womanly gothic/doom metal. Sounds pretty dope so far.

If you take a Solitude Aeturnus album and speed it up by 30%, do you get a Fates Warning album?

"Beyond the Crimson Horizon"? Yep, more or less. The only SA album I ever cared for.

My Dying Bride - “The Angel and the Dark River”
I honestly consider this - and “Turn Loose the Swans” - to be as much prog as it is doom. These albums really pushed the envelope in ways hitherto unseen. But “Angel”, in particular, was - and remains - wholly unique in its mission and execution. None of the copycats have ever even stepped foot in its orbit.

Griefgod – Deterioration

Varied death metal with lots of slower parts and a powerful production. Sounds alright. Death metal fans can probably tell me whether it's good or bad in the subgenre's wider context.

I always thought that 'Plague of Procreation' vaguely sounded like Bolt Thrower with clean vocals.

Hell - Human Remains

Completely batshit, kinetic energy... a unique songwriting style, too, nobody else could do this shit. Getting David Bower on vocals was a real masterstroke. He really adds a lot. These days the way they stretched this out to be 66 minutes feels a little contrived, but the meat of the songs, when they crank up those blaring, galloping riffs, are just so good.

Lost Horizon - A Flame to the Ground Beneath

One of the more fully realized PM bands, everything just fits together and flows. Everything is totally larger than life, sharp and catchy. So great.

Suffocation - Effigy Of The Forgotten

This fucker will have been in my life for 33 years this year! Crazy to think about.
Total classic Top 10 death metal album and better than anything Cannibal Corpse did.
Will be seeing them next Saturday night fuck yeah!

Wolf - Ravenous

Wolf's good form continued on Ravenous. The album gets off to a fantastic start with Speed On and Curse You, Salem both of which are highlights that demand repeated listens and would easily appear on a Wolf best of.
After that it's a solid, varied collection of songs that range from good to very good. But once again it probably could've been trimmed of a couple of tracks coz it does drag a bit here and there.
Ravenous is not up there with Black Wings, The Black Flame or even the debut but it's a decent Wolf album nevertheless.

Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence

Classic melodic black metal album. Is not on the level of The Somberlain or Storm of the Light's Bane but is a good album.

Love Effigy and Suffo, but Butchered at Birth and Tomb of the Mutilated are easily on par with that album.

At Vance- Facing Your Enemy

Good god man this is generic and dull. This isn't one of those bands that are simply meh like Altaria or Axenstar, this is just lame.

Obituary - Buried Alive

Was never a massive Obit fan, I had CoD but that was it, but this album really kicked my ass in 2023. Made my top 10 easily. Just something primal about this kind of death metal. No frills, just bludgeoning.

Gorgoroth - An Excerpt of X

Been checking out their discography the last couple of days and never realised the amount of different musicians involved with the band over the years. This track was a welcome surprise on Insipit Satan and it turns out solely written and performed by Infernus. Will give them a break for now but this has been the most interesting listen so far.

Perhaps my favourite Finnish death metal album. This or Demigod's Slumber of Sullen Eyes.

Black Sabbath – Live Evil (2023 Remaster)
Heaven & Hell – Live from Radio City Music Hall

"Live Evil", first listen, but the first couple of tracks don't sound promising. The production is uneven, somehow hollow with an audience that's just too distant. But, if memory serves – it's been fifteen years – the "Radio City" concert, that only features Dio tracks, is the full monty. Nice background ambience while you're doing something else.

For some reason I've been listening to a ton of 90's/early 2000's metalcore.

It's clearly one of the most underrated ones from that era.

NP: Coffin Curse - Reeking Filth of Ages

One of the best death metal albums of the year so far. Why does Chile kick so much ass?
