Melechesh - Sacred Geometry

One listen and i immediately felt the need to pick up the guitar and learn it in full.
It's amazing, very diverse and they have an incredible mastery of dynamics! :)

Bell Witch - Mirror Reaper (As Above)

Can funeral doom be beautiful? I think it can. The way the first song transitions and picks up the pace ~26 minutes in... that is quite something.

I've been listening to Enslaved's new E album and I've been loving it so far.
It has that progressive sound they've been going for, maybe it's not their best but it's damn solid on these first couple listens. That run with the organs through "Sacred Horse" has me thinking of the run through "The Dead Stare" where you had an almost Pink Floyd sound going through it. I like that "On the Run" kind of fun that Enslaved rolls around in once in a while.
That cover of "What Else is There", even though it is a bit out of place, really works to lull you out of how much harder the rest of the album hit. Great album, those northman vocal harmonies always perk my ears up, but it's one I need a few more listens with to really feel out.

It seems good but those vocals...

Whoa boy, I missed this piece of fierce holy terror metalcore last year. Never rips so hard.

Root - The Incantation Of Thessalonian Women

This album is so good. Just learned it was available on Amazon after all - that wasn't the case when I was in high school and had to go off an illegal download. One of the greatest metal albums ever probably.

Legionnaire - Enigma of Time (from Dawn of Genesis)

Just ordered this on LP/CD. Finland and Detroit are the hottest spots on the planet for heavy metal volcanic activity right now. Legionnaire are everything that I love about this style. Muscle and atmosphere of USPM with the melodic deftness of nwobhm, and the relentless forward focus of a speed metal gem. These boys get it!

Judas Priest - Revelation

Giving Nostradamus another shot years later. I forgot how absurdly long this shit was. Pretty crazy from a band that had never tried anything conceptual like this before. So far it's OK and I do admire what they were trying for - some more epic, structured arrangements in a somewhat modern Power Metallish way...

edit: Yeah this is pretty dull. Just not a lot of real powerful hooks or melodies. Competent at best, but no real money-shots so to speak.

Hellhammer - Messiah [Satanic Rites december 1983]

So after the death of Martin E. Ain brought my attention back to Hellhammer and Celtic Frost. I listened to the first two demos today ('Death Fiend' and 'Triumph of Death') and... they sucked! Now, I finally got to 'Satanic Rites' and... holy hell! This is good stuff!!!

This goes nicely along the first Bathory album!

Some days I say that one's my favorite; other days it's Somewhere in Time. But yeah, an undeniable classic all the same.

Savatage - Edge of Thorns

Was never sold on the "second phase" Savatage, but now, really listening to this, it sounds good. Good that there are some fun basic heavy metal songs scattered around all this more atmospheric stuff - like Lights Out.

Motorhead- 1916

This is real experimentation. Ripping off Alice In Chains, Motley Crue and Soundgarden doesn't count as experimentation you faggot Metallica fanboys. Metallica got big because of marketing momentum and sucking the corporate cock. This has more emotion and weight than ANYTHING Metallica has ever done. Fuck you and your insulting of bands that stay the course.

Desolate Shrine - "The Waters of Man"

Psyched for this album. The released songs are shorter and more to-the-point than the last album while still having that fantastic atmosphere.

Wow, that was unnecessarily aggressive for no apparent reason and used a homophobic slur - how shitty of you.

Revisiting A Twist In The Myth for the first time since it first came out. I was a little burned out on BG (and power metal in general) in the mid 2000's, so I'm hearing this record fresh, finally.

Black Breath- Sentenced to Life.

This is something of an unheralded favorite of mine. I don't think about this album often, but when I do, a big, wicked smile comes across my face and I have to jam at least to "Sentenced to Life" or "Endless Corpse". Is is crust? Death metal? Thrash? Crossover? Yes. If you're a fan of any of those, this sucker is very highly recommended.

Yeah it just works better every time. I only have the three first albums, which were basically a different band, and The Last Supper, which I really liked. I have Heart of Darkness waiting for heavier listening here.

I need to rewrite my review for The Last Supper, definitely better than I remembered, with decent production. Although the self titled has the best guitar tone committed to disc for them.

This is what I think when I listen to Iced Earth. They are 'experiemental' by Motorhead standards, but actually are one of time's most consistent bands, but always get shit from the fedora crowd for being 'cheesy' or 'stock' or whatever. Jon Schaffer triplets for your FACE.

Lizzy Borden - Save Me (from Love You To Pieces)

You gotta save me!
I'm not just any fool!
You gotta save me! Save me!
I'm dyin' here with you!

FUCK! This song is up there with the most catchy choruses I've ever heard. It's unbelievable the way the lyrics/vocal delivery/riff all swirl together into a perfect earwig moment. Save me! Save me! I'm dyin' here with you!

Rock-solid candidate, but i think that my vote goes to Across the Universe.. or maybe Voice of the Cult :)

Holy Moses - Finished with the Dogs (full)

It eclipses their discography and roughly 97% of the whole thrash metal genre.. how much angry needs to be one man to compose this?!?

Here's the thing. I LIKE experimentation, as long as a) it comes from the right place, and b) the band has the authentic chops to pull it off. The "let my heart go" country nonsense doesn't fit Metallica. The place Metallica was coming from was "lets troll and piss off as many metalheads as we can." Well fuck you, then. If you are going to create from a place of hate you better expect it back triple-fold.

The Dark Element- The Dark Element

I'm convinced when Jesper left In Flames he should have rang up Annette to make this album, cos this is essentially a less shitty Reroute To Remain. Better late than never I guess.

Voivod - Fuck Off and Die (Rrroooaaarrr)

What's in a name? Why, it's everything you need to know! Absolute savagery to get me through some real work here at work. The relentless hellpace and caustic nature of this album is unmatched. One of if not THE most confrontational album ever.

Rrroooaaarrr is definitely underrated to be sure. I'm disappointed "Thrashing Rage" (my favorite from the album) isn't on their live repertoire anymore. Seeing old videos of Snake mimicking a machine gun kick was pretty cool.

Anthrax - Among the Living

Just a blind purchase at an FYE because they were selling it for only $5. I never actually listened to the album in its entirety before that. This is actually really fun. I remember a while back we ran polls of the best debut, sophomore, 3rd album, etc for each of the big 4 bands. If we did that again, I'd probably put Among the Living as the best third album.
