Excalion - Arriving As The Dark

This is such a kick ass tune. Who says Europower can't rock the fuck out?

Vektor - Psychotropia

What a great record, hopefully the band didn't totally implode and can recover.

Destruction - Our Oppression

I've been tearing through the Destruction discography. This song is great even if the "gang shouts" are really f'n weak.

The new Vallenfyre. Not too great, too many unmemorable fast songs.

Edguy - Wrestle the Devil

If you don't like Edguy's more rock-oriented style, you won't like this. I prefer Ravenblack, but Tobi sounds pretty good on this.

I've tried that album recently again and like it quite a bit. The gang shouts sound fine to me.

I was hoping Vallenfyre would be one of the better retro death metal bands, but aside from the lead guitars they don't have anything to offer that really impresses me.

NP: Fields of the Nephilim - Love Under Will

You can really tell Tiamat were influenced by these guys later in their career, even though this sounds more like my thing.

Hell yeah. I fucking love that chorus effect FotN (ab)use so much.

Gods Tower - Reign of Silence

I should write a review of one of the albums from this band one day. Unlike a lot of other folk metal, it's very personal and heartfelt while also being 5x more metal than most folk metal bands.

Excalion - Divergent Falling

Very much enjoying this song. Let's see if the entire album holds up as well. Not too thrilled that it's an hour long, but hopefully Excalion can pull it off.

Finally giving this a listen and I'm floored. von Meilenwald is a goddamn genius.

Meshuggah - Straws Pulled at Random

This is the 2006 re-recorded version. I can vaguely remember the original 2002 version of Nothing so I can't really compare if the 2006 version is an improvement over that. What I can is that this is damn heavy owing to the 8-string guitars they used here which they originally intended to use for the 2002 version but were unable to do so.

Has to be my favorite Meshuggah track.
Enjoyed The Violent Sleep of Reason, my favorite from it is Clockworks.

Yeah, this album is quite good! It works without Schmier, and that My Sharona cover is really great! (I also really like the original, so maybe that's why, haha.)

The 2002 album is much better, because that's how it's supposed to sound despite the rushed job, plus the re-recorded version sounds exactly like Catch 33, which I didn't want. The only improvement is the final track, really.

Amentia - Scourge

I got this today, and I'm impressed! It's going to take a couple of listens to really sink in, but from first impressions, it's quite good. I like the staccato riffing in it.

Havohej - Kembatinan Premaster

I can't see Havohej coming out with anything like this ever again. Such a unique album that's not for everyone, but works really well for me!

Fucking 'ell this is brilliant. Damn, damn, damn good stuff. Amazing record with crisp riffage and tons of atmosphere thrown in, along with the glorious song craftsmanship. Been spinning it at a rather fresh 5am run to work every day and I'm really impressed. There are times where it feels like a seamless blend of Dark Medieval Times and The Shadowthrone too, which is a nice little nostalgic touch for this old man...

The best Meshuggah album along with Catch 33.

Destruction - Mortal Remains

I've read negative reviews of "Metal Discharge" but when I finally got a copy and listened to it, I wasn't disappointed at all. It's still the same energetic, high-intensity thrash that we expected from this power trio.

Hell - Curse and Chapter

I can spin the two Hell albums over and over. This one might be a tad weaker than Human Remains, but it still rules. And I love the vocals - so much venom, so much sarcastic bite, and so theatric.

Haven't worked my way up to "Metal Discharge" yet but if the rest of the songs are as good as this, I'm gonna dig it for sure.

Prior to going on this Destruction binge, I was only familiar with "Infernal Overkill" & "The Antichrist" and stupidly felt like Destruction was a distant fourth to Sodom, Kreator, Protector but I'm re-thinking that now.

MALAPHAR - Promo 1991

Old school death metal, the obscure way.
There are doomy moments, and riffs that almost sound... Finnish?

Nocturnal Rites - Before We Waste Away

This isn't the greatest song that's ever been released, but it's definitely promising. The chorus is pretty damn good.

Orden Ogan - Come With Me to the Other Side

It usually takes me a bit to get into OO material, so I won't freak out just yet, but I'm not really feeling these new songs. Why did they even have Liv Kristine sing on this track?

Gotta disagree on that Orden Ogan song. I'm liking these new tracks way better than Ravenhead and probably most of the rest of their stuff too. Lot of heart and passion in this, a lot of atmosphere.

Edguy - Wrestle the Devil

This is basically exactly what I liked this band for. Super fun and with a monster riff and cool vocals. Just rocking the fuck out. Good summer time music.

Like I said, it usually takes me a while to get into their music. I originally hated Ravenhead, but one day, it just clicked for me.

Iced Earth - Incorruptible

I don't know a lot about Iced Earth, but this isn't bad.

Edit: I knew you'd like that new Edguy track, Emp.

Re: Orden Ogan; Ravenhead never did much for me, but this new stuff is why I used to like them - they just do really cool things with melodies and aren't afraid to step outside the box. This song and "Fields Of Sorrow" are incredibly emotional, intense songs, much more than a lot of their stuff has been. I'm actually really looking forward to it now and plan to buy it.

Tankard - Maniac Forces

Um, so I guess I've been underestimating Tankard for decades. Had them written off as a joke band unworthy of the mantle of Teutonic thrash mastery but I was clearly wrong. Don't know what changed for me but suddenly they are right there with Destruction/Protector for me (still a notch below Sodom/Kreator).

I just came here to post about this song as well. Definitely a more solid step into the black metal as well as the folk territories. While it doesn't give much to the occasional black metal listener if surely is effective and quite catchy. Been listening to it repeatedly!

If the whole record is focused on her strong points and make them shine, then it can hopefully be better than the really weak and messy attempt at black metal that was the debut.

That was the entire point of creating this gimmick account, wasn't it? I'm surprised you've stuck with it for so long.

Escape ain't bad at all... that's just some not-so-obscure bit of trivia (that it was an attempt a single) that everyone likes to cite to seem like they are in the know. And well, no well-meaning metalhead can admit liking a song aiming at more mainstream inclinations.
