Yngwie Malmsteen - Fire and Ice

I got kind of bad impression of the first side of the first vinyl (it's a double lp). Second side is more like it.

The Obsessed - Sacred (2017)

Re-listening for my 2017 list. Must admit I played the re-released 'The Obsessed' more than the new album this year.

^ Interesting, I picked up the self-titled debut instead of the new album a few months back as my introduction to The Obsessed and had the opposite reaction, wishing I had picked up the new record instead, as what I'd heard off of it is ferocious. The self-titled isn't bad at all, but is really classic rock-y if you know what I mean.

NP: Occultation - Silence in the Ancestral House

The perfect accompaniemnet for a cold and lonely autumn morn. Surprised this band isn't more widely praised. They're like a heavier, female-fronted Ghost with stronger Mercyful Fate vibes.

Cool album, i was intrigued to hear the guitarist behind Negative Plane playing that kind of doom metal and i wasn't disappointed :)

Kontinuum - Breathe

This album has grown on me so much, can't wait for their next one!

Fire and Ice is one of the greatest Malmsteen songs ever! The album as a whole is definitely a step down from the four that precede it, but lots of good material throughout the record.

Yeah, I'm only lately come to realize how great (at least older) Yngwie is. There are lots of awesome material in the first four, and Fire... seems like an album you want to play over and over again.

Bethlehem - Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia

I really liked _Schatten aus der Alexander Welt_, and now I'm exploring some of their newer stuff. So far, so good. It's strange - I don't like much industrial music, but I enjoy the little bits that make it into Bethlehem's experimental stew.

Trey Azagthoth's guitar madness is just what I need these days. Heavy, sludgy and occult-fueled.

A world-consuming brute of a song from an unbelievably massive and dark album. The song competes with 'Maze of Torment' for my favourite MA track and Gateways is, to my mind, the 2nd best thing they ever did. Fantastic stuff; a modern classic.

I don't think it's as good as the first three, but it's a solid fucking album for sure.

Morbid Angel - World Of Shit

Utter mastery of their style. Probably their best with Altars. Just utter fury and hate in every note.

THE WORMHOLES

It's a cool space rock/ prog band from France.
with nicely psychédelic and 70's influenced songs.

Saw them live yesterday night.

Replacire - Do Not Deviate

Technical death that isn't the usual dissonant stuff. They save the guitar wankery for the rhythms and lose most of the monotonous solo noodling of TDM. My favorite TDM of the year.

Symphony X - Kiss of Fire

I seriously don't understand why Underworld got as underrated as it did. This has quickly become one of my favorite SX songs really, just sheer power and heaviness.

Have you checked out Beneath's Ephemeris? That was by far by favorite non wankery tdm release this year. Thanks for sharing that though, good stuff.

Morbid Angel - Garden of Disdain

Interesting double bass roll swagger going on here. Some seriously amazing drum work in death metal this year.

The Sound of Lucifer Storming Heaven - Necromantia

I'm only familiar with the band's first two albums, so I thought I'd check out the rest since Osmose is doing some reissues next year. So far, this one is kinda underwhelming.

Ironflame - The Gorgon

They played this song last night flawlessly. Andrew D'Cagna's voice is incredible!

Morbid Angel - Kingdoms Disdained (2017)

First playthrough and the only song that really impressed me was Architect and Iconoclast - simply relentless. And I guess also Azagthoth going HAM at the end of The Pillars Crumbling.

Kalmah - The Trapper

Like 75% of this album is about a guy hunting local finish wildlife and it fits perfectly with the music. Something about the focused singular experience of hunting down a fox in the freezing finish night lines up perfectly with majestic melodeath I guess. Or fishing. Or hunting ducks.

Radiohead - Optimistic

Teeters on the edge of optimism (like the title) and mania - noisy, Velvet Underground-like rock with clanging guitars and catchy vocal theatrics.

Doedsvangr - Satan ov Suns (2017)

Yet another band from Shatraug. Nothing groundbreaking here, just your meat n potatoes variety of BM with forgettable vocals.

There's a breathtaking riff in Rituals though which comes out of nowhere that instantly took me back to Sargeist at their finest!

Nice to see some appreciation for Kiss of Fire! Underworld is easily my favorite Symphony X album. One of the heaviest power metal albums out there, it has such a massive sound.

Now:
Megadeth - Hook in Mouth

One of my favorite Megadeth songs. I can never decide which album out of the first three is my definitive favorite. Killing is My Business, Peace Sells, and So Far, So Good is a perfect trilogy in my book.

Narcotic Wasteland - Delirium Tremens

Pretty good death metal, cool riffs on here. Nothing groundbreaking, but I've always liked Toller-Wade's vocals and playing. This works for me.

Deceased - Unwanted Memories

Deceased has become a favorite of mine ever since I heard 'As the Weird Travel On'. I always had this impression that they were your typical death metal band as I read articles about them but not really being able to hear their music. Boy was as I surprised when I heard this album. I don't have anything against death metal, I listen to it regularly. But Deceased's music was so much more than what I expected.

Cadaver - Ins-through-mental

Cadaver were one of the more unique sounding death metal bands in the Earache roster. Their album 'In Pains' remains a favorite of mine till today. It was quite disappointing when they disbanded only to resurface years later as Cadaver Inc. and with a totally different sound.
