Dimmu Borgir - Sorgens Kammer Del II

This is like the perfect song to show someone who isn't into black metal in an effort to get them into black metal.

Sarcoptes - The Fall of Constantinople, off Songs and Dances of Death

This is just fucking amazing. Basically picture really thrashy black metal punctuated by symphonics that sound apocalyptic rather than cartoonish, and... yeah. Xl approves.

It's not like I expected much, but... this is pretty damn bad.

Morbid Angel - Thy Kingdom Come

Blessed Are the Sick has never been my favorite Morbid Angel and while I used to think its flaws (the weak production, diverse songs and the so-so instrumentals) were bothering me too much I just can't deny how strong it sounds to me nowadays once it's on.

Another cool one. Not as round as (1992) Gorefest - False but quite good guitar playing and production.

Urna - Iter ad Lucem

My first foray into this band, and I'm impressed. It's like a slightly more suffocating Esoteric, another great doom band. I'll have to check out more of these guys.

Runemagick are so damn good: this track has it all in the riff department. Incredible death-doom with potential wide appeal.

I'm convinced that this band could switch to pop music and still sound good.

Runemagick are great, but personally they didn't get to awesome status until Requiem of the Apocalypse, personally. :)

Drug Honkey - Cloak of Skies

This is really trippy, but I like it. Experimental doom metal that probably requires weed to fully enjoy, but as a not-stoned man, this is nice! Plenty of nice riffs and sound throughout the album.

Decided to marathon a bunch of recent Edguy albums in the car today - long ass drive and it's been a while since I recapped a few of them. The ones from Hellfire Club to Age of the Joker are still tremendously strong to me - what a confident, vibrant band, great instruments and brassy, loud, charismatic choruses. They never did the same thing twice.

Stormlord - And the Wind Shall Scream my Name

What a title! Not exactly my genre, but i have the chorus melody stuck in my head: they captured really well the mediterranean feel

The Slow Death - II

Some killer Aussie funeral doom. I love the female vocals in this (which are apparently less operatic than before), and the riffs are just awesome. The opening 22-minute song is just amazing. I will check out more of this very talented band.

Blessed are the sick is one of those records that I never thought of as a huge, indispensable achievement, but I also realized that I have no trouble playing it three times a day and enjoy it.

NP:
Xentrix - For Whose Advantage?
Quite complicated in the way it's written, but really well-done. Somehow reminds me of Forbidden's "Twisted Into Form", except with crunchier guitars.

Any doom fan, hell, any metal fan who hasn't heard those first two Trouble albums is really missing out. They are rare masterpieces. I recently bought their Stockholm DVD.

Right now I'm listening to one of those rare perpetual loop albums, playing the following over and over. Riff-after-riff death metal with a hint of Blood Red Throne.

Inhumation - Ontogenesis

I put on Paradise Lost last night while I was writing, and have just stuck with them all day. Every time I hear this band, they move another notch up as a favorite. Can't get enough of them.

Possessed - Fallen Angel

Seven Churches is really hitting the spot today. This song in particular is a great example of what I love from them: raging, about-to-fly-off-rails speed mixed with quirky riffing. The main riff to Fallen Angel sounds so playful...I really love that in this satanic setting. It makes everything sound so revelrous. The bells they added are also fucking perfect. Great albums, flies by!

Seems like everyone is listening to Morbid Angel; I'm on Altars of Madness right now. Been on an old school death metal kick for the last week, and I remembered liking this one. So far so good.

Morbid Angel - Heretic

I can't wrap my head around the logic behind this album. From that guitar tone to the awkward song construction to the large amounts of padding... just, what?

Morbid Angel - Summoning Redemption

Joining in the whole MA discussion going on here. I appreciate the early albums highly. They are called masterpieces of death metal, and rightfully so. I've yet to hear any band do such a weird mix of otherwordly acrobatics, doom and dissonance like Morbid Angel did on Gateways to Annihilation, though.
