Inanimate Existence - Underneath a Melting Sky (2017)

Prog and tech. Two words that usually have me running for the hills, yet here I am! Prog/tech death out of the Bay Area, it was the artwork that made me want to check this out, and I'm glad I did. Not sure how it stacks up against the competition but this was listenable and enjoyable for me. :)

Holy. FUCKING! Shit. Has anyone else heard this? Listening for the first time. Absolute insanity. A perfect album.

Yeah dude. This album is a surprising hit. It goes really hard and boasts some really neat riffs, too. One of the dudes from BangerTV put this album as his favourite for the year.

Very good album, mate. It came out a year after their last one Calling From a Dream which received mixed reviews from fans, so this one is sort of like an apology of sorts, haha. It's got some killer songs on it but I quite like "Blood of the Beggar."

Seminal Embalmment - Seminal Embalmment

I've listened to this a couple of times now and it's a real thick, heavy album. Hailing from my home country, too, which is an added bonus. This won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you're into brutal death, you might get a kick out of it.

A day mostly at home. Only PERFECT albums today:

Black Sabbath - Headless Cross

Yes, a new fave. Very catchy and dark.

Wasp - The Crimson Idol

Perfect, and best of the first five at least.

Waiting for a Heavy Load re-release in the mail this week. Should be good.

I have to say, Dance of December Souls is a near perfect album. Perfect doom/death.

Suhgurim - No Mercy (2017)

First listen to this Black Metal one man project from the USA. Old school BM feel with better production.

Sepultura - "Amen"

The beginning of the end for Sepultura. While I still enjoyed 'Chaos AD' and it was a breakthrough success for them, we all know what followed. They would go down the Korn route on their next album, Max would split and they made album after album of worthless material. It's good that they're gaining new ground now with a trio of solid albums.

Weregoat - Malediction Command

Late to the game with these guys, but this is some seriously sick bestial metal. This track has some rabid vocals like you only hear with this style. Hide your nuns, hide your wives!

Destruction - Inventor Of Evil

This is a LOT better than I remember it being - their best post-reunion album alongside (obviously) The Antichrist. There are a couple of filler songs and the rest pretty damn solid. I don't think I'll ever get bored with Sifringer's riffs.

Virgin Steele - Rising Unchained

Virgin Steele bug the shit out of me; they can do some really amazing music when David DeFeis is on the ball but a lot of their earlier albums have this really gross, borderline pedophilic sexual posturing while the later ones are completely bloated and silly and repetitive, while The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Pt. II sits right in the middle and is thus the one I consistently enjoy from start to finish with no songs that make me want to grab David DeFeis and go, "Dave! Dave! Is this really necessary?" God I love this album. I hope it gets a remix one day--not some bullshit "remaster" but a complete do-over of the production to audiophile standards, starting with the original studio tapes. It deserves one.

How are the later Virgin Steele albums repetitive? Assuming you're talking about the Atreus series, I just don't get that at all.

I think ''Tomb of Insomnia'' is a bit shaky, but otherwise I agree.

NP: Blind Guardian - Sadly Sings Destiny

Having recently discovered this album, I can safely say that Blind Guardian are one of the most versatile metal bands out there.

Suffocation - "Dismal Dream"

For some reason, the title reminds me of Vader. I just checked and the band from Poland had a song titled "Distant Dream" which is probably the reason why I'm reminded of it when this Suffocation track came on. A great track from a great album!

Deftones - 'Pink Cellphone'

This song (and this album) would get a lot more love from me without the last verse; completely wrecks the mood of song.

I came across this project called "The Thing With Five Eyes" today. It's kind of darkwave/ trip-hop but has a lot of orchestration in parts and a lot of jazz influence.

The album is called "Noirabesque". Very interesting. It's going to take multiple listens to really get into, but I think some people here would dig it.

Seeing them this weekend. The last time I saw them, it was legit one of the top 5 best shows I've ever been to.

Bolt Thrower - "Through The Eye Of Terror"

Crushing everything in its path like an out of control tank, Bolt Thrower lays waste to everything with their ominous riffs and pummeling blast beats.

Shining - X - Varg utan flock (2018)

Have never really understood the appeal and this new album hasn't changed my opinion.

Zhrine - Unortheta (2016)

Now this is the kind of bleak, desolate BM I can get behind. Would have preferred they tightened it by dropping the unnecessary experimental/ambient stuff. The atmosphere was dark enough with the actual music.

Pig Destroyer - Valley of the Geysers

I like the dynamics of this song. Instead of blasting out of the gates, Pig Destroyer starts of at mid-pace, almost groovy before developing into a blast beat. Crushing.

Drakkar - Until The End

First listen of this and it marks a double dose of Italian power metal that arrived today (along with Dragonhammer's The Blood of the Dragon). This record isn't quite as good as the other, but is very serviceable. This album is definitely too long, but I loved Eridan Falls and Dragonship. Will take some time to learn the other songs.

Baroness - Take My Bones Away

Yellow & Green has to be their weakest effort, but this song is one of their best.

Melechesh - Genies, Sorcerers and Mesopotamian Nights

This band is a total enigma for me. Djinn is so bloody awesome, and I distinctly remember that I listened to that album first. Sphynx left me cold, not that I didn't like it but...it lacked something. I still can't say what exactly, and all of their subsequent albums lacked it too. Their live performance was quite good, but it left a bitter taste as they didn't play one song off this one.

Ed Said would hate me but fuck, Djinn just sounds so invigorating and exotic. I suppose the latter element is what's lacking.

I'm with you in that the later stuff sounds like it is missing something, despite universal praise. Sphynx kills it, everything after is playing catch-up. That sterile, antiseptic production job, insanely precise drumming and airtight tremolos are quite the force. Plus the songs have a decent amount of diversity. I mean, the opener is what a wise man would call a "destroyer of worlds."
