Nico - Janitor of Lunacy

This is really unexpected, i didn't think her solo albums could be this dark and haunting!
She sounds like a sorceress here, i mean literally.

Grade A thrash. The instrumental opener "Welcome to Your Funeral" and "Die in Pain" are highlights.

Shit yeah, really decent tune. The riffs are great and the melody's are nice, the chorus is triumphant and powerful, production is perfect. I hate tot say it but I do find Tobias' voice kinda annoying, he exaggerates the vibrato so dramatically but I usually find myself getting more used to his style of singing after a bit of immersive listening. I do find this hard to tell apart from Avantasia in many aspects though.

I'm currently playing Enslaved- Mardraum. For some reason, I've basically never listened to either Blodhemn or this one despite owning them both for a few years. Anyway, Mardraum is pretty great. I like the slightly raw production and the way the progressive bits sometimes cut in out of nowhere then it gets weirdly heavy again when you wouldn't really expect it. Grutle's vocals are really good too. The clean vocals have a hint of the unpolished 2nd wave stuff that Enslaved seem to have left behind. I like it. Favorite track is the opening number Storre Enn Tid - Tyngre Enn Natt which really exhibits the qualities I described earlier, but all the songs are interesting and worth listening to. Good album.

Morn of Solace: I HAVE seen Drape live and it was utterly phenomenal. Wild P was like a deranged preacher behind his pulpit. The band brought an insane level of energy mixed with technicality. Played a gang of my favorite tunes. The newest one is unbelievable. A huge 180 from Buried in Time.

Manilla Road - Dragon Star

A wonderful uncapping of pressure. This is the Black Dragon version so the track list is all jacked around. Opening with Masque of the Red Death and closing with Death by the Hammer. Dragon Star makes a wonderful little down-turn before the sledge-heavy ending.

Yeah, I guess that's what happens when he puts out so much stuff all at once, it starts to sound similar. I dig all of it though.

Psychotic Waltz - Faded

Goddamn do I love these guys. Just expert songwriters.

A few minutes ago, crying while watching X Japan play "Forever Love" at their guitarist's funeral
Immediately after, laughing my ass off listening to Alestorm's new song "Fucked with an Anchor"

The emotional difference between the two is astounding

I goddamn love that album; I personally love "Bodily Dismemberment" ("Why do you make me do these things, when I never wanted to hurt you?!") and "Re-Animator"; I dig that melodic riff that pops up throughout the song.

Anyway, I'm trying to give Overkill's newest another shot. So far however, nothing doin'. Aside from "Goddamn Trouble" and "Come Heavy" much of the album aside from a few bits and pieces fail to really do anything for me.

Listening to Everygrey- Passing Through. Nice track indeed, nice album. Particularly amused by the hardstyle kick featured to emphasise a few little bits here and there on that track.

Ahah! Great! Glad to see that they delivered! :)
i know by a direct source that they put immense amount of effort in reharsals and songwriting and it seems to be paying off, i really liked the new one too!

Root - Kargeras

Still haven't heard something like this, the guitars are phenomenal and Big Boss has the voice of a king.
The vocal build up to the "So beautiful, yet mortal!" Lyric is spine chilling :)

Disembowelment - Transcendence Into The Peripheral

This is really a one-of-a-kind album. 24 years old and it can still crush you to paste with ease.

Raven - Hellraiser

The entire second half of this record is packed with under-sung gems. Hellraiser and Nobody's Hero are two big standouts. I guess on cd I usually played this in the car and rarely made it that far. Ravens ability to bring the pure steel with an old-school rock and roll energy.

Edit: Sentence fragments are. Fuck you, bourbon.

Warbringer - Woe to the Vanquished
Honestly, it looks like Laux quitting the band and Kevill having that existential crisis on whether or not to continue making music was the best thing that could have happened to the band. This is fucking ferocious, and overall their best album across the board. They'll still never make a song as flawless as Living Weapon, but damn if they don't get close with songs like Descending Blade. I'm pretty amazed, I always thought Warbringer was a band that was obviously at their best onstage and never quite brought it as hard on record, but this one shut me up. Definitely a lot of renewed passion in this one, I'm very pleasantly surprised.

Voivod - Nuclear War

A buddy once described this tune as the irradiated version of Angel Witch and I think that's the best hot take possible. Just an unbelievable, apocalyptic ending to a masterclass album. All hail Piggy the stubby-fingered wizard.

Sabbat - Melody of the Unknown Insanity

Their side of the split with Hades Archer. With a band this prolific, I'm a little wary of buying releases outside of their main LPs for fear of paying for music I already have. It's impressive how Sabbat consistently include new tracks or different versions of old ones (plus splits give you music from another band, often one you haven't heard previously). "Plasmas Goat" is a standout here.

Early Gorefest rules. Erase is pretty overlooked, I must admit. They struck a good balance between death metal and death 'n roll on that one.

Undergang - Doden Laeger Alle Sar

Trying to get pumped for the new one, and it's working. Nothing is as good as their first album, but Undergang can still bring it.

Yngwie Malmsteen - Ship of Fools

I'm only 4 songs into this album (Attack!!), but wow this is so much better than I expected. I had not really heard many good words about this era of his career, but this is just like a less good/memorable version of his best era. Granted, this album is 73 minutes, so I'm sure it's going to drop off at some point, but so far so good!
