Manilla Road - Mystification

This was always one of the ones I never fully 'got' - I enjoyed it but it was always too thrash for me and didn't have the 70s stuff or more epic leanings I liked from a lot of MR. Now I got it on CD and it's definitely clicking. This thing just doesn't let up. Really commendable. Great riffing.

HAUUUNTEEED PAAALAAACE!

Saxon - Unleash The Beast

GREAT album. Rarely talked about in the Saxon discography and for shame. Really rockin' tunes and the title track is an all-out-assault!

AC/DC- It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock & Roll)

Wish they did more with the bagpipes.

Carcass - "Cross MY Heart"

One of my favorite tracks from Carcass' much maligned album. I still maintain that this album is not as bad as people make it out to be.

Windir - 1184 (album)

Melodic black metal with method and wit cleaving like the dagger of the veiled nomad.

Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta III : Saturnian Poetry

profound Glory and the deepest despair personified. A combination so few musicians have ever achieved; not only in the history of metal but music in general. A monumental achievement by Vindsval. True occultism at its best.

Metallica - Ride the Lightning

Listening to this song made me realize that my state doesn't have an electric chair but it does have active gallows. Which is weird because you'd think that gallows is a more barbaric method of execution. Maybe they got sick of the burning flesh smell?

Cirith Ungol - Paradise Lost

Rules. This seriously beats at least One Foot in Hell IMO, which is still fucking great. Might be my second fave after King of the Dead.

Seriously, what an opening track. Should really listen Time more. Not my total fave from them, but what could rival albums like their two first ones.

Whenever I see someone mention post Don't Break the Oath Mercyful Fate here, I wonder if I'm really missing out much. The first two albums are excellent and DBtO is one of the best metal albums ever so.

NP: Blind Guardian - Ashes to Ashes

To me this is the album where BG really combined the best elements they'd be known for.

The e-chair was pushed by Thomas. A. Edison to promote his use of DC electricity. True.We listened to that old Metallica album recently, after watching For Whom the Bell Tolls on DVD. Good stuff, album and film.

Eternal Tears of Sorrow - Black Tears

The album title (Chaotic Beauty), the band name, and the artwork (gothy looking sad female) all made me think "AHA ! Delain will no longer have only Nightwish for company !", but I was deceived. It's some odd Finnish gothic-symphonic-deathy-thrashy-blacky-metal thing.

Great fun, and the chorus below is done in a proper shout-along power metal style -

This fluid on my cheek
It drains me, I get weak
My heart is cold and bleak.
BLACK BLOOD !
BLACK TEARS !

Hah ! Thanks, every day is a school day ! I bought their album on a total judge-a-book-by-it's-cover whim, so I'm totally blind about them.

NP: Darkthrone - Those Treasures Will Never Befall You, from the Circle the Wagons album.

Circle the Wagons is an album from one of my favourites Darkthrone phases. Their metal punk releases (2006-today) just kicks ass! Darkthrone is one of the most versatile bands IMO, always doing a great work mixing different genres in metal thoughout its releases.

In the Shadows, Time and 9 are great stuff. Great vocals, great riffs. Couldn't live without those. Well I could, but life wouldn't be as happy. In the hardest "fanboy phase" I used to worship Into the Unknown and Dead Again too, but now I kind of see their flaws. :) Still fun to play every now and then.

Vader - The Final Massacre

Would love to hear this with the bass drums toned down a bit in the mix, I usually lose track of what he is doing with his hands due to the double kicks being so overwhelming.

Still my favorite Vader record though.

Sabbathian doom married with free jazz saxophone wildness with the Stooges-like power? Yes please!

^ Sounds cool. I'll have to try that.

Brainstorm - Ravenous Minds

These new songs are seriously fucking cool. I don't know why I'm that surprised. Tight, heavy, meaty power metal the way they have mastered for years now. This is some of their more clear, accessible, consonant stuff, too.

It really is cool. A lot of jazz stuff there and no vocals but some vibes are doomy and Sabbathian. The beat is a steady rock thing too.

Cockney Rejects - Lethal

Very cool album. A hard rock/NWOBHM ditty that really sounds good!

You'll be glad to know that that song is on both the debut and at least one of their six hundred rerecording compilations!

Fuath - "I"
Very cold Atmospheric Black Metal by Saor mastermind Andy Marshall heavily inspired by Transilvanian Hunger era Darkthrone. Very cold, grim and nostalgia-infused album.

Mightiest - "SinisTerra"
This album may be one of the contenders for my favorite Black Metal album of all time, and really holds up to the band's mid-90s legacy as well. Recommended to fans of Dissection, Emperor, Nagelfar, Nordlys, Lunar Aurora, The Ruins Of Beverast and many others.

Trying to unrust the clean vocals after years of disuse, this has become my go-to cord stretcher.

Dance With The Dead - The Awakening

I've been getting into electronic dance/rock music lately and I have to say that this is pretty awesome. It's good driving music for those long, summer travel days. Definitely has kind of an 80's vibe to it.

I'm on a classic metal kick recently. This song is very haunting.
