Cool as that design sounds, don't do it. The cotton just wicks up the paint and it bleeds like nothing else. You can still use stencils, just use a tube of acrylic and brush it on, then after it dries set the paint with an iron.. If you want to make it perfect, use a freezer paper stencil. http://www.ehow.com/how_2121330_make-freezer-paper-stencils.html

I almost ruined a jacket with spray paint once, luckily I tested it on the discarded sleeve first.

Sounds good - is the acrylic nice and durable? I was inclined towards spraypaint because there'd be little chance of it rubbing off, but if acrylic is better and much neater, I'll go for that.

I was wondering what everyone thinks of non-metal/rock patches on battlejackets? Is it alright, doesn't it matter or is it no-go? I'm thinking of putting a Those Poor Bastards patch on my jacket, but still haven't made up my mind about it.

Haha, they make you instantly untrue and a poser. Avoid showing off your actual taste of music in your vest if not all you listen to and enjoy is metal.

The main reason why the vast majority of vests are only metal is because people might not even come to think of the fact that some non-metal bands too have patches. Another reason is that fewer non-metal bands put as much effort into making their text logos unique, let alone aesthetically appealing to metalheads. A third reason is that people generally buy their patches from metal distros and gigs where non-metal pathes are usually not available.

A Those Poor Bastards patch? Damn cool if you ask me. I have a patch and a pin of Bob Dylan on mine, I don't care, it's your vest, do what you want it, fuck the conventions, if they exist.

Definitely mix it up with non-metal bands if you are into them. There are loads of bands that would make it to my jacket they did patches.

I have a badge with Stuart Lee's face on, that's the closest to a non-metal band on mine.

I realise it's my vest and all, and that it doesn't make me a poser and stuff like that. Just wanted to hear what people had to say, probably gonna throw it on, maybe a Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks patch too!

When the acrylic is "sealed" by ironing it into the fabric it holds decently. You can go to a craft store and buy something called "Textile Medium" or "Fabric Medium" which you mix into the paint 25-50% by volume and it will make acrylic hold just as well as what they print t shirts with, and it will make it more flexible. I prefer this to most fabric paints.

The most important thing is to test everything on another piece of fabric, and to practice stenciling.

EDIT: If using fabric/textile medium you might want to buy the paint a shade darker to be safe. It dilutes the color less than you would think, but it's best to be safe.

Thanks for the advice - I've spent this evening putting on the "Bathory" logo - I sucked at stencilling, somewhat, but I've managed to neaten it up, and I'm adding the finishing touches tomorrow, before sealing it.

Got any advice on sealing it effectively? The fabric-paint I baught gives reccomendations, but I'd like to hear from a few sources.

I'm going to start stenciling a Warning logo (the doom band). First attempt and I'll post results.

This is what I've done so far, I'm fairly satisfied. - it's not perfect, but I've got a myriad of excuses to quell my own inner perfectionist with.

To seal it I usually wait a couple hours for the paint to dry then I cover it with an old shirt and iron for about a minute, until the paint gets very slightly tacky, but not so much that it rubs off on the cloth you covered it on. That just allows it to kinda melt into the fibers, so it holds better.

I made mine (well, in progress) on a plain cotton hoodie. I found the patches really blend into the black cotton, to the point you can't even tell they're sewn on. I'm still not sure how to post a pic, though. I'm sure somebody mentioned how in this thread

Just started. I have 6-10 more patches to put on, depending on how it looks finished

You upload a pic of your vest to a site providing free upload services (I don't know any English ones), copy the url of the picture and when you make a post, you put the url like this:

Or you can just attach the pic to your message with the "Upload attachment" service of this site.

Now that's what a vest should look like.

It's your jacket, and should reflect your personality. I have more than one non-metal patch on my vest: The Blues Brothers, Vincent Price, H.P. Lovecraft, and Edgar Allen Poe, and I've received plenty of compiments on them when I've worn it to shows.

When you say H.P. Lovecraft, do you mean the completely badass writer or the completely badass psychedelic rock band?

I mean the completely badass writer.

I had Elisa at Over-Zone custom make patches with portraits of Lovecraft and Poe. She liked how they turned out, so she added them to her regular stock.

She does good work, and is very responsive. She has made several custom patches for me that the bands were kind enough to give me permission for (on a one-off basis). Recommended.

I would say a light worn looking denim looks the best.

I think it's blasphemy to sell your vest :). Anyway, you can sell it, but guys, in PMs only. The thread is not a marketable.

I live in a small town now, with an absence of a music scene. Whenever I go out drinking at bars and such, all the bikers there start up a conversation about it. It's pretty neat.
