Death Metal isn't renowned by the quality of it's lyrics, but there's always some albums that shine on this aspect. Here my picks:

Death - Human
This one is funny, I'm generally think that Death lyrics are ok (SBG, Leprosy and part of Spiritual Healing) or just suck (embarrassing pseudophilosofical ramblings and butthurt against people on subsequent albums). But, Human contains some very cool lyrics about topics of human suffering that generally aren't touched by other bands. For example,

The horrors of schizophrenia:
Quote:
See things that are not there
Intruding voices
What went wrong to their picture perfect life
They once knew - Flattening of emotions
A mind shared by an uninvited stranger
Which comes and goes as choose to appear
Should we not prepare for the uncertain
Mysteries of our life, of our destiny

The horrors of being unable to die

Quote:
When it comes to living, no one seems to care
But when it comes to wanting out
Those with power, will be there
[...]
A request to die with dignity
Is that too much to ask?
Suicide machine

The horrors of having a siamese twin and never being able to have peace

Quote:
An illusion of privacy
Together - they absorb each other's lives
As One - they will live and they will die
A living hell has begun
[...]
Displayed as a nightmare
Criticized through words and eyes
As they stare
To the normal it seems grotesque

The horrors of being blind

Quote:
Close your eyes and imagine to be without
What we take for granted every time we open our eyes
A permanent shadow to never step away
Feel the dark in the cold
Feel the warmth of the light
Which has been denied
Hands change into my eyes

My other pick is Miasma - Changes. Probably one the few Death Metal albums that really nailed the horror, occult feeling on lyrics.

Disincarnate - Dreams of the Carrion Kind is probably my favorite.

Probably Cryptopsy's first two albums. More poetic, and "psychological" for lack of a better term, than most death metal.

From what I can remember, Ripping Corpse and Revenant had pretty cool lyrics of the lovecraftian nature.

Actually I'm going to make a claim here, Nuclear Death probably had the best dm lyrics ever. Simultaneously surreal, violent, fucked up, sadistic, but poetic. Phil Hampson was a great lyricist back in the day. Thinking of Carrion for Worm especially.

I completely agree. Mutant Christ have a totally deranged feeling that reminds me of that Saint Sebastian image on the closet of the movie Carrie.

Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity

Quote:
The bright light of day
You'll no longer see
In a blind dimension
Henceforward you'll be

A burying in darkness, you will have to bear
Deep, you're drowned, in this optical nightmare
In vortex, your visions collapse instantly
Now your life is condemned to obscurity

Condemned to obscurity

Of your eyes you are deprived
Now touch what you would've seen
Like if you still had those eyes [x2]

Lost in this void of light
There is nothing to see, everything to feel
With no more sense of sight
There is nothing to see, everything to fear

In the gloomy vault of nothingness
My imagination will agonize
Suffering of a psychic blindness
Nothing is all I recognize

In a blind dimension, henceforward you'll be
Buried in darkness and obscurity
Where visions in vortex collapse endlessly
For life, you are condemned to obscurity

Lost in this void of light
There is nothing to see, everything to feel
With no more sense of sight
There is nothing to see, everything to fear

There's rhymes, imaginative and vivid imagery and they actually feel like songs as opposed to a load of profanities, gore and buzzwords thrown together like shit to a wall hoping it'll stick.

Plenty of death metal bands with quality lyrics. Immolation stands out among the crowd though with superb, thoughtful lyrics. Especially songs like "Father, you're not a father". But really most of their songs are well written lyrically.

Nile!

I cannot pick a specific album from this band's catalog however I simply love them for choosing the Egyptian mythology theme instead of sticking with some standard gore/war/death/hatred/... lyrics. Some of their songs are really capable of evoking a damn brutal atmosphere just because of the lyrics' awesomeness:

(simply ignore the typos in this one...)

Quote:
-The Burning Pits of the Duat-

I Hath Been Immersed Head Down
In that, Which Floweth In Abundance from the Slaughtered Ones
I Hath Been Made to Eat Feces and Drink Urine
I Lay in Chains before the Undying Flames
I am Helpless in the Presence of He Who is Master of the Pits of Fire
I am Humbled and Broken in the Presence of Those Who Shall Consume My Shade in the PIts of Burning
I Didst Bow in Homage to the Spawn of Set
I Hath Kneeled in Homage to the Servants of Shesshes
In Rebellion, I Did Recite the Formulae of RItes in Glorification of the Lords of Flith
I Hath Recited the Formulae of Rites in Glorification of the Lords of Wickedness
He Who Hath Dominion of Khenti-AMenti Hath Uttered, "Hack in Pieces and Cut Asunder the Bodies of Mine Enemies and the Members of the Dead Who Hath been Turned Upside Down
Scatter in Pieces Their Shades
They Shall be Cast Down Headlong into the Pits of Fire
They Shall not Escape nor be able to Flee From the Flames Which Art in the Serpent Set-Heh"
My Heart Desires to Burn in the Pits of Fire
Allow my Ka to Blaze in Flames and be Utterly Consumed
I Stand in Submission Before the Living Ureai of Flame Who Hurls Forth Burning Heat Against The Tongue of Those Who Hath Spoken Evil
Incinerate Me in the Pits of Burning
Sear Me in the Pits of the Damned
Immoalate Me in the Pits of Torment
I Seek only the Charnel Bliss and the Blackened Caress of the Burning PIts of the Duat
I Burn, I Burn
I Burn in this Tomb of Fire
I Burn,I Burn,I Burn

I really need to sit down and listen to those two one of these days. I've listened to bits and pieces, but I guess got sidetracked. I know I'd really enjoy them if I listened more.

Probably not as deep as the aforementioned examples, but I've always found the lyrics on Necroticism (Carcass, duh) to be insanely well written.

Pyrrhon.

Darkly witty, acerbic and stylish.

Doing real evil sure seems risky
And like it might require a suit and tie
Better to trust time-tested theatrics
Ancient sacraments passed down from the ‘80s

Oh, it’s the old rot of Rome
Dolled up in goat horns and a gas mask
And croakin’ out turgid liturgies
I got your old-time religion right here

Crypto-Christian cheerleaders
Root, root, root for the losing team
Better start picking up hours
Thousands to spend on robes and costumery
The hordes won’t show if your look ain’t fancy

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled
Was convincing you saps
That ‘observe the dress code’
Shall be the whole of the Law

Incant thy prayer to pseudo-profundity
Inverted crosses confess thy pontiff envy

Menacing gibberish covers for hollowness
Bestial blasphemic nunrape nonsense

Edge Of Sanity's Crimson obviously... a great story about humans trying to survive in a post apocalyptic wasteland where they can't breed and having their trust betrayed by a diabolically evil Crimson Queen!

First ones that I immediately recalled are Necrodeath-Fragments of insanity and the first two Pestilence albums.

More to come, lot of death metal bands have very interesting lyrics

Suffocation was the first band to come to mind when thinking of death metal with great lyrics. Pierced From Within has some really well written lyrics on it. Suspended In Tribulation is a particular standout from that record. Death, Carcass and Gorguts are also good examples.

Pestilence's latest album 'Hadeon' has great story about mind parasites. Made me almost believe into them creatures ;)

Fuckit, I think the lyrics on Tomb of the Mutilated are brilliant. They are horrific, but there seems to be a reason for the horror unlike so many try-hard goregrind or death metal bands: an ongoing concept about psychopathic brutality being this absolute breakdown of all borderlines of humanity. It really is a human becoming a cannibal corpse.

I wouldn't say the say the same about another album I love: Onset of Putrefaction. Those lyrics are fucking silly, essentially only about eating dead people, but who cares, the music is incredible.

I have always been very fond of The Chasm's lyrics. They're introspective and surreal, and capture a definite lovecraftian horror / multidimensional terror like aura. Very fitting for the way their compositions are structured too.

I've always liked Immolation's lyrics, particularly on Close to a World Below. On par with Spiritual Healing/Human era Death in my opinion - intelligent and valid, without going overboard into pseudointellectual rambling territory.

Timeghoul's 'Occurrence on Mimas' stands out to me as well, this time for perfectly capturing the pulp sci-fi novel vibe.

Lack of Comprehension (I believe) is about people who place blame on others, not realize they themselves are the source of their own misery/downfalls in life. Using excuses to justify their own inner weaknesses, etc. It's not as strong a lyrical theme as the others, but Chuck usually goes for that type of fair.

Secret Face is about people's "true face" beneath the one they show society. People will lie to you to get what they want out of you. You get to see their secret face. Poker face. I think the Japanese have a word for the "faces" people exhibit when alone, in a group, or being themselves, etc.

Vacant Planets is about humans screwing up Earth to the point of needing to find a new place. So many supposed vacant planets to land on and recolonize; would we have to adapt to living underground on said planets?

Some far out, bong-induced stuff for sure.

Well I'd say it's clearly a stab against modern stereotypical pseudo-evil, corpse-painted "Satanic" imagery.

Probably means they see themselves as the "real deal?"

The first verse of Death's "Destiny" moves me almost to tears when I think about them. It has been a mantra for very difficult moments in my life.

"Time is a thing we must accept
The unexpected, I sometimes fear
Just when I feel there's no excuse for what happens, things fall into place."

I don't think Pyrrhon uses the same type of imagery nor claim to be "evil". I think they just diss the whole concept of bands relying strongly imagery, assimilating them to Dungeon & Dragon nerds, and denouncing their obsession with Satan as a form of repressed love for Christianity.

If it weren't for the reference to nazi imagery, I would think it is directed at Ghost, but it's probably directed at them and a bunch of other bands too.

Those were from "Condemned to Obscurity", from the same album.

I think the title track's lyrics are influenced by Oliver Sacks' book Awakenings (1973), which influenced the movie of the same name (1990).

French death metal/grindcore band Benighted has quite a few tracks with great lyrics. Their vocalist Julien Truchan has worked in a psychiatric hospital and he used this experience to create some very intense and well-writen lyrics. They write both in French and English.

Stay Brutal:
Quote:
Have you ever heard the rattles of agony ?
When each minute seems like an eternity
When the silence is broken by the screams of anguish

Perceptions altered by rage
Enclosed in a cage
Howling
Encircled by morbid visions
Which take all the place in me
Submitted to emptiness
Envolves merciless spirit
I have made things I cannot speak
Dreams which never die in me

Dead human bodies are treated like simple toys
Macabre games where victims are my near relations

Inhuman practices come to me by insctinct
Invading my heart with dark insanity
Accepting this pulses pleasure is growing more and more
How I like this feeling of culpability
Delectation without name
Remains of humanity
Inviting anyone in my circle of madness
And my need for violence is boiling in my veins
Gutting all the bodies until the last

Stay brutal

Chained up, muzzled, blinded, molested
Stay brutal
Beaten, borken, strangled, mangled
Stay brutal
Slowly dismembered alive
Stay brutal

Voices told me : "I am the one
Full of hate who guides your arm
Forget all notion of the asset of life"
And I still standing with my eyes closed to this sublime work of ferocity
Voices tell me : "Do it again, stay brutal !"

Forsaken:
Quote:
Forsake
Every night happens the same relentless terrifying scenario
Alex ten years old has to confront hell to finally find the sleep

Closed eyelids do not prevent him to see
The hands on the ears and he still listens
Afraid that his heart stopped in te hammering of a funeral march
Forsaken, the hour has come
He's forsaken by the ones he trusted the most in

Between invisible creatures as darkness is falling around
Freezing kisses from his mother rejoining her bed in heaven

Closed eyelids do not prevent him to see
The hands on the ears and he still listens
Afraid that his heart stopped in te hammering of a funeral march
Scary noises under him

An uncertain place on the Earth and the ritual reject
Lead him to surrender himself in terror
Slave to the agressive outside
In the lair of the ashamed child

As he stands close to the Styx
Ready to fall and swim
Convinced that he will never be able to cross it
Abysses inhale him from underground

Closed eyelids do not prevent him to see
The hands on the ears and he still listens
Afraid that his heart stopped in te hammering of a funeral march
Forsaken, the hour has come
He's forsaken by the ones he trusted the most in

And there is plenty more. If you speak French, you should also read their French lyrics.

I was just listening to Asphyx - Last One on Earth and couldn't help but think about the lyrics even though I don't know/care about the lyrics of 95% of what I listen to. You can check them out here: https://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Asphyx/Last_One_on_Earth/4921 - pretty interesting stuff.
