I'm not overly familiar with post-Painkiller Priest, so hit me with your top 10 lists. I will eagerly check out the most popular selections.

Good question, I am not the right person to ask. Probably a lot of other people can do much better than me because I don't know were to start.

Just listen to Judas Rising from Angel of Retribution, and the whole Firepower album. No fucking Surrender! No picks from other albums, because they suck/haven't listened them enough. Seriously: No fucking Surrender!

No Surrender is their best song since any number of tracks from Painkiller. Just quickly, I'd have No Surrender/Judas Rising/Halls of Valhalla/Nostradamus/Firepower as top five, though No Surrender the best by a fair distance.

Don't miss out and listen to that "Jugulator" - monster!

My list of favourites (not ranked):

Cathedral Spires
Blood Stained
Guardians/Rising From Ruins
Necromancer
Traitors Gate
Judas Rising
Dead Meat
Abductors
Bullet Train
Spectre

Yeah, that's two albums only, but these are the ones I keep coming back to.

I should have elaborated.

I've listened to all of the post-Painkiller albums at least once, but nothing has ever grabbed me in a way that's led to repeated listens. Hence, the request.

'No Surrender' is a fine song, but it's a bit too stadium rock for my tastes. I much prefer 'Firepower', which is essentially ersatz 'Painkiller'.

Just skip Priest's post-Painkiller output entirely. They needed viagra to get through Painkiller and after that it's just a whole load of flaccid disappointment.

8. Burn in Hell
7. Sword of Damocles
6. Bullet Train
5. Halls of Valhalla
4. Jugulator
3. Cathedral Spires
2. Hellrider
1. Demonizer

I mean, some of Firepower is fun but I don't think I can try and push any of these out for it. Primal Fear did it better. Oh, Nostradamus...! The title track is great but do I prefer it to Blood Stained/Bloodsuckers? It's kinda similar to the latter one in being a Painkiller-esque pedal-riff monster but is less innovative ultimately.... (the rest of the album is bobbins)

I own 2 Priest records post Painkiller. One I like, AoR, one I find boring, RoS. So I'm not the best to answer this. However from what I'm reading I think I need to find a copy of Jugulator.

It's a ripper albem so it doesn't sound like your grandpa's Judas Priest. Gotta approach it as an alternate universe Priest.

  1. Subterfuge
  2. In Between
  3. Cyberface
  4. Bullet Train
  5. Cathedral Spires
  6. Solitude/Exiled
  7. The Beginning of the End
  8. Hellrider
  9. Halls Of Valhalla
  10. Crossfire or Never the Heroes

Have always been in the minority among fellow Priest fans but I love the Ripper era of the band. Subterfuge and Cyberface are wicked awesome to jam along with and shred too. I could have named 8 of the 10 spots to Ripper era songs but could not say I necessarily like them better than some songs since Halford reuniting. Death Row is blisteringly awesome but I could not put it above Hellrider for instance, however Jugulator I find is better than every album Priest has done since Halford rejoined.

Although most of you guys picked terrible songs (just kidding) but em I only the one thinks the song one on one is a very underrated song? I don’t know, but when I hear that song especially when I’m having a shit week at work or someone grinds my gears I just feel a boost of aggression when I hear that song.

2. Burn in Hell
3. Bullet Train
4. Hellrider
5. Demonizer
6. Lightning Strike
7. Deal With The Devil
8. Spectre
9. Halls of Valhalla
10. Firepower

Do you have to be a Metallica fan to like 'Cathedral Spires' ? It doesn't sound like Priest in the slightest, not even in that "It's still us, we're just pretending we can keep up with Slayer" way that Painkiller sounds like Priest.

I like Angel of Retribution, and Firepower is a great album for driving fast to, so I can manage five -

No Surrender
Firepower
Necromancer
Hellrider
Lochness (sing Stonehenge in your head, it's great)

Always thought it sounded like a great entrance song for a pro wrestler.

What does this even mean?
Methuen wrote:

Since when can one say "This song perfectly represents the sound/style of Judas Priest!"? The band willingly has only one identifying trait and that was to have no identity to call their own. Hence why they could get away with making a Speed Metal monster like Call for the Priest, which is preceded by - and interpolates - a genre of music as far removed as one can get... Gospel. That same album to have probably the first ever proper Power Metal song (Sinner), Thrash Metal song (Dissident Aggressor) and a mostly acoustic Folk ballad that would make David Gates and Bread sound like King Diamond and Mercyful Fate (Last Rose of Summer). Saying a song does or does not "sound like Judas Priest" is, sorry, just incredibly dumb.
Methuen wrote:

Or maybe Judas Priest were just happy to continue evolving as a musical outfit that had four mainstays who brought in their influences from multiple genres. Besides, Slayer have barely ever reached a magnitude that would permit them to carry Judas Priest's traveling bags.
Methuen wrote:

So two of the bands most forgettable albums is somehow better than blistering metal albums and a really surreal symphonic album?

One on One would basically be a Rob Zombie song if they threw in a movie sample and some extra "yeah's" in there. I also enjoy me some classic Rob Zombie so there's that.

That it sounds like one of those mid-paced tracks that Metallica put out, and I just don't get it as a Priest track. Maybe it's Owens' vocals ? I take the point about them having a musical evolution, so take a breath. (The quintessential Priest track is CLEARLY Turbo Lover. Obviously).
