Hey!

I'm searching for some albums with great artwork but with really bad music. It's really easy to find some atrocities of art but with really good music, but it isn't the other way around.

Thanks.

Not really "horrible music", although I don't care one bit for it, but I find Ghost's cover artowrks infinitely more captivating and well-crafted than the records' contents. I could say the same for Blasphemophagher's full lengths (the third one in particular) and the vinyl version of Filipino Antichrist by Deiphago.

For those who can't stand drone/doom, I think most of Sunn O)))'s discography would qualify.

I'm not gonna call it horrible cos there is no such thing as a horrible Motorhead album, but man, Bomber lets me down every time I give it an umpteenth chance.

Mortuary Oath's "Once Upon a Dreary..."
Image

At first, it seemed like the perfect band for me. Old school, 90's death-doom heavily influenced by King Diamond, awesome band name, and the dark, eerie cover art seemingly sealed the deal. Well, then I heard what the band actually sounded like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJX7mONLw9k

Listen to that dude's fucking vocals!!! It's less of a "death growl" and more of a "light cough". Needless to say, I never bothered to explore the band further.

i'd say children of bodom's last album is a prime example of horrible shit encased in rather nice cover art

Fortress. The 1985 album. When I first saw the cover art and heard the intro guitar lick on "Metal Meltdown" I thought "hell yeah, this is gonna be some badass USPM album like Master Control". But no, it's just bad hard rock (except from "Into The Night").

That's an interesting choice - care to elaborate? I'm interested, as it's easily the closest thing to a good album Master has ever released . Pretty cheesy art if you ask me, but it's got a certain charm to it...I guess that's reflective of the music, in a way.

I agree.

I nominate this thing here:

Personally, I don't hate the album, I find it a bit unfocused, but the cover art looks cool, at least to me.

That is a part of the CMS detector at the CERN super collider: a cool piece of artwork indeed for a disappointing album.

I beg to differ. For me, Master's finest moment was their self titled album. From there it was really nothing but a downhill course. On the 7th day has got a very impressive artwork, call it biblical, call it transcendental, but the music was a borefest like no other. Paul Speckman had such more potential than to release that subpar recording. But that's me.

Not horrible music, just boring and forgettable. The best thing about these albums is by far the cover art

All three of those albums are classics, nothing boring or forgettable about any of them.

That seems to be a common issue with threads like these. What one person thinks is horrible, inevitably it's something that somebody else really likes.
(and with that, I apologize to the Meshuggah fans out there.)

Meshuggah belongs in the "terrible artwork for terrible albums" thread in my opinion hahaha.

That Casket album art is amazing. Old school sci-fi looking. Ill go in with low expectations.

My contribution would be Inferi. Personally, this is just another run-of-the-mill, forgetful melo-death band. Their album art is awesome, though.

I quite liked the St Anger cover if I'm honest

The music is a lazy, badly-performed, reprehensibly underdeveloped mess (of course)

Heresy!

You don't have to like what they do, but saying they are a horrible band shows a pretty limited and shallow appreciation for music and creativity in arts in general.

Xibalba's two main albums are a pretty unfortunate waste of perfectly good Dan Seagrave artwork.

Xibalba's first is an amazing mix of sludge and hardcore with some smooooothly mixed in doom elements. Loved it. Fine artwork two.

even if you think it is just a run of the mill album it wouldn't qualify as horrible though, personally I like the album a lot but hé, tastes etc.
still browsing my collection for albums that I dislike but have a cool album art, mostly both are not that good though.

That Molested album is good stuff. If I was going to say anything negative about that album it wouldn’t be the music... it would be the kinda goofy cover art, or the awful band name.

I think Sunn O))) are generally okay, dude; I was speaking for those who find no value in their genre of choice, as I don't think anyone could deny their records generally display very impressive packaging and artwork choices. I wouldn't call it "horrible music" myself, even at my least favourite (e.g.: I'm not fond of the Merzbow guest tracks, but even though I don't particularly enjoy listening to them I will still recognize it as an interesting concept).

Indeed, I was thinking that those three albums represent an opposite idea to this thread's: great music, not so great artwork.
To be fair, Molested are kind of a hard band to get into; I remember giving the record many spins before it started clicking with me.

They're ugly in a good way. Death Metal is all about finding beauty in things that look evil, twisted and disturbing.
Also, in my humble opinion, To The Depths is that kind of album that is only worshipped based on cult status instead of real quality.

Yeah the artwork is alright, but I honestly think Fear gets way too much hate. It does have a few boring tracks in the middle, but Bruce's energy and raspiness is at an all time high, and the guitar licks are super fun. "Afraid To Shoot Strangers" and "Judas Be My Guide" are two of my favorite Maiden songs ever!

Seconded. To be honest, aside from Weekend Warrior and The Apparition, there's really not much on this album I'd rather axe.

Chains of Misery is pretty bad too. And Fear is the Key is such a miserable downer, who the hell wants to hear a song about fucking AIDS from Maiden? Plus some borderline retarded vocals there, you can hear that Dickinson didn‘t gave a shit at this point.

The Fugitive on the other hands is underrated.
