Chozzen Phate is probably the worst example of this. Great band who released an amazing demo in the early 90's but that name is shitty to say the least. Who are some other offenders of this crime?

Slauter Xstroyes
Myramainz

Both are amazing bands who shot themselves in the foot with stupid band names.

Motörhead should be the only English band name where umlauts are allowed. I love Dream Tröll, for example, but god damn that spelling is stupid. I pronounce it "Trewl" as it's written out of spite.

Mütiilation. There should be a missing I, not an extra one. Really a missed wordplay opportunity.

Great bands bro. I remember reading an interview with Paul Kratky on why Slauter Xstroyes is spelt that why and he said he or they were doing drugs while trying to come up with a name for the band and he thought it looked and sounded cool. You have to be high to do something that retarded.

I don't get it...mutilating the word mutilation to emphasize its meaning?

If it was Mutlation, that would be missing an "i". Get it?
Missing an"i"/ missing an "eye"?

Haha it took me awhile to get the Mutiilation/Mutlation joke also, but it was a good one!! Well played!!

Anyway, I actually know this band personally so no offense to them, but I still don't know why exactly they spelled their band name "Elctrikchair" (pronounced "electric chair"). They used to play a lot in my hometown when I was in college, so needless to say I was drinking a lot during this time and can't really remember the reason(s) for why they chose to spell their band name that way.

I remember reading an interview with Luc Lemay where they asked him if he regretted, in hindsight, calling the band Gorguts. He said if he could go back and change it, he would simply add the "e" in.

Ancient VVisdom (two v's instead of a 'w')

Agreed on Slauter Xstroyes and Sunn O))). Also all of the Sunn O))) worship/parody bands out there that use shit like squares and ]]].

I've seen one or two bands called Wykkid Wytch or something similar. That's trying too hard to me.

The Wizar'd (what is the fucking point of that random apostrophe?)

Dark Tranquillity - Maybe not as stupid as the other ones already mentioned here but I've always wondered why this is misspelled. What is the extra 'l' for? Is their intention to have their name pronounced similar to 'Padilla' or 'sarsaparilla'?

Mercyful Fate fits the thread, but I like the misspelling in this case because it makes it more memorable and it makes the logo more aesthetically appealing without making the pronunciation obscure.

Nah, Tranquillity (with two "L's") is the UK spelling.

I disagree on Sunn O))) - it's not an alternative spelling to anything (like Chozzen Phate is to Chosen Fate) and actually means something.

Also fvck those bands who spell their u's as v's.

I remember reading a King Diamond interview in a zine called "Less than one" from around 1995 in which Kim said that they were aware of it and that this particular spelling was intentional.

My real question is how the fuck should you pronounce their name? I'm sure it's just "wisdom" like a normal person but I have too much fun holding out a v sound when saying it out loud.

I'm also at a point where I have to remind myself that the historical Camelot was spelled with a c, not a k...

i know you're supposed to say "doom us" but my mind still hasn't gotten used to it

The band Wyrd also sounds weird to me (in both ways)

Cianide. When I see the correct spelling of cyanide it looks wrong to me, so they got that going for them.

If you're bothered by these type of names, be prepared to get a whole lot more bothered in the coming years. With the ubiquity of Google, bands need to find ways to optimize search results and distinguish themselves from bands with similar names. Mütiilation was ahead of the curve. You might think their name is stupid and ungainly, but they've successfully differentiated themselves from eleven other bands named Mutilation (possibly more that aren't on the archives). Same thing for Cianide. I'm not thrilled about this, but I prefer it over bands with sentences for names.

Well there's also Sadistik Exekution, but given how fukking insane the band is, this spelling is totally justified.

Intentionally changing C's for K's or double K's and adding 666 in a band name is pretty stupid in my opinion. I don't have an issue with bad band names, I still try to focus on their music, but hell, what's the appeal of doing that shit?

The stupid part of Sunn O))) is the O))). For years I assumed the band name was pronounced "Sun Oh." Nope. Just "Sun." So not only is the O superfluous, but of course those stupid end parentheses.

Agreed about bands that do the u-v switch, though.

I'm listening to their The Console Wars digital album and it's not bad. The album concept is about the displeasure of console gaming. I guess they're a part of the pc master race.

Not really a misspelling but I hate how blasphemy have a lowercase H in their logo. BLASPhEMY - once you see it, it can never be unseen.

Personally, I've always loved that part since I interpret it as sonic waves emanating from Sunn speakers. Don't know whether that was the artist's/artists' intention, but given Steve Malley's visual art, I suppose so. Also considering how strongly early Sunn 0))) relied on steady, uniform waves of pure sound, this seems very plausible to me.

There is a band called !!! (pronounced chk chk chk), and an indie rock band named Alvvays (pronounced Always). Yeah, like someone said earlier, you're going to see more and more of this.
