Sometimes you have to 'judge a book by its cover'. For a lot of technical death metal bands, I really enjoy seeing a crazy detailed and trippy album cover. Some of my favorites are Symbolik's Pathogenesis EP, The Faceless's Planetary Duality, the classic Suffocation Effigy of the Forgotten, every album cover from Rings of Saturn (Dingir is especially cool), and Burning the Masses's Offspring of Time. Ya know...the kinda stuff you'd get stoned just to stare at it while the entire album plays.

So what are you favorites - super complex, colorful, and detailed as all hell covers?

Cool topic. The vibrant, detailed artwork has always been of the biggest draws for me for metal in general. Here's some of my favorites...

Image

Prosanctus Inferi - Noctambulous Jaws Within Sempiternal Night

This reminds me of Dan Seagrave's cover for Dark Recollections by Carnage taken a step further. Some of the most exquisite, and expressive use of color I've seen recently.

Image

Occultation - Silence in the Ancestral House

So dreamy and surreal. Captures the vibe of the album perfectly.

Image

Mekong Delta - Dances of Death

Very atypical artwork for a thrash metal band, but fitting considering their brand of eccentric, depth-defying technical thrash. Those burning oranges!

I super like the well detailed and inspired art works,or paintings made by true artists in cd covers. I never heard these mentioned bands before.A amazing cover for sure it´s a invite for a first listening. Here´s some i can remember by famous bands, not necessairly complex or colorful, but insteresting in the trippy aspect:

Image
Sepultura-Arise(duh)

The 90´s death/thrash metal vibe, the apocalyptic and infernal atmosphere, the gloomy sight.

Image
Tiamat - Wildhoney

The trippy and nature vibe, the sunny, lysergic atmosphere and good use of colors, portrays and captures the album concept with a beauty rarely seen .

You know it's a Kristian Wahlin non-black metal artwork when he's managed to sneak in at least some butterflies and blossoms. Missing here: bugs.

Ghoul-Splatterthrash

I love all the Ghoul covers but this one it's like a Death Metal gig was meant to be :-P in a small and crowded place.

Obviously Mastodons Once Around The Sun deserves a mention. I still don't know what the fuck is going on in it.

Spoiler: show
Image

Dude, you gotta put the spoiler tag on the picture if it's too big.

I nominate these ones:

(I.) Kampfar - Profan

Image

As far as I know, the band took the cover from Zdzisław Beksiński, a Polish surrealist painter. It looks dark and mysterious, and fits the music well enough.

(II.) Vader - Tibi et Igni

Image

This one basically speaks for itself. Hellish, detailed, dark. Perfect.

(III.) Iron Maiden - Virtual XI

Image

I reckon the fans of Derek Riggs' work won't be too pleased with this one because the cover was actually made by Melvyn Grant, the guy who also did "Fear of the Dark" and "The Final Frontier". Talented guy in my opinion. Also, this album is underrated as fuck.

(IV.) Akhlys - The Dreaming I

Image

Jesus Christ, the horror. It fits the music perfectly, even though I'd say this one is more appropriate for nightmares than dreams.

There are probably more I could think of, but I don't want to steal the opportunity from ya, guys.

And I'm still hoping for Katy Perry to do another Christian album.

Aarni - Bathos (check out their logo on their M-A main page, too)
