There's apparently a new Marsh Dweller album in the works. One of the only bands I've heard that occupy a similar niche to Obsequiae, so I'm pretty excited.

My Kundalini is solo project of former Ensiferum Bassist Jukka-Pekka Miettinen and it is totally the last thing I would expect from someone affiliated with ensiferum.

It's some sort of psychedelic metal with some death growls etc

Here are the two songs released so far:

I checked mostly because of the Ensiferum connection, but I really like what I hear. I'll be definitely checking this out.

Debut "The Art Of Dying" is out at 20/04.

edit: yeah new Hoth too. I'm interested in that too!

New Fable tracks from upcoming album. One is like a classical composition and the other has a Summoning vibe. Both are good - the last album was pretty fun.

Since there's no "Suprise Albums of 2018" thread, this debut from a Serbian black metal band is very impressive and unique (guitar solos). It releases April 19th, but is fully listenable on bandcamp and only .6 Euros for digital.

Endarken
https://endarken.bandcamp.com/album/tvoj-je-hram-u-srcu-mom

EDIT: Adding 2 more to the list, both coming out on Non Serviam records which has a lot of great stuff and all their digital stuff is pretty much name your price or 1EU.

Raven Throne The teaser track is good old mid-paced riffy winter black metal.
https://non-serviam-records.bandcamp.com/album/raven-throne-i-miortvym-snicca-zolak

Stortregn This is like melo/technical black-death or something, sounds like these guys really know how to pull it off better than most. I'm going to check out their previous album as well.

Impiety have been promising a new album for a long time, but according to their Facebook, they were finally in the studio in March recording a nine song album. It's been five years since The Impious Crusade EP so it's about time.

FINALLY Battleroar released name and release date of their new album!

BATTLEROAR To Release ‘Codex Epicus’ In June: ‘It’s Definitely Melodic, Powerful, Doomy And Epic!’

Greek epic/power metal force BattleroaR is currently putting the finishing touches on their fifth full-length album, “Codex Epicus”, which is set for a June 15 release via Cruz Del Sur Music.
The follow-up to 2014’s “Blood Of Legends” was recorded at Devasoundz Studios in Athens, Greece and will feature a guest appearance from someone very familiar to fans of epic metal: Manilla Road guitarist/vocalist Mark Shelton.
The cover artwork is being created by Vagelis Petikas of Revolver design.

“The title symbolizes that in order to create something that will stand the test of time, something epic, you need to fight and struggle for it,” says guitarist Kostas Tzortzis. “We drew our inspiration from the ‘Codex’, a book written by worthy men well before our time. We wanted to portray that after gaining knowledge from the ‘Codex’, you could now create music that is epic and fitting of the book.”

“Codex Epicus” will mark the second BATTLEROAR album with vocalist Gerrit Mutz (also of SACRED STEEL). Mutz, who can also be heard on the band’s 2017 split with long-running U.S. metal bastions OMEN, is described by Tzortzis as someone who “sings with great passion and strength.” Asked to describe the sound of “Codex Epicus”, the guitarist says BATTLEROAR fans should expect something even more bold and grandiose compared to “Blood Of Legends”, along with some added wrinkles thrown into the mix.

“Musically speaking, the album has some new elements to present,” says Tzortzis. “But, overall, it’s definitely melodic, powerful, doomy and most certainly epic! We worked really hard on the songs and tried to come up with some new twists and turns while properly representing the history of BATTLEROAR.”

BATTLEROAR will support “Codex Epicus” with extensive live shows across Europe.

Originally formed in 2000, BATTLEROAR’s self-titled debut album was released in 2003. The band followed it up with “Age Of Chaos” in 2005 before joining Cruz Del Sur for the release of 2008’s “To Death And Beyond…”

Super psyched. Overall, I found Blood of Legends disappointing, however it had a few TREMENDOUS tracks, and the descriptors of the new one in the post of "doomy" "epic" and "grandiose" I find quite tantalizing, as I feel this will build on the great tracks of the last one.

Hate Eternal have begun recording a new album with Hannes Grossmann on drums. I don’t know if he’s an official member or is just helping out, but he’s a very skilled, tasteful drummer and can write some mean riffs, too. He’s more than welcome to stay! There was a blurb in Decibel with Erik Rutan not too long ago about how he was experimenting with a variety of tunings while writing among other ideas, and I’m curious if maybe this album will be slightly out of the box for HE in one way or another.

On June 15th Cor Scorpii will finally release their second full length, entitled Ruin.

Very, very excited for this! It's been 10 years since Monument. They got a new guy on lead guitars, Erlend Nybø from the Doom metal band Funeral. Also features guest vocals from Mats Lerberg, also formerly of same. Makes me wonder if they're moving in that direction.

I get the MA comparisons and I get why Hate Eternal will never be close to as good, but I still like them. I feel like they get bashed a bit too much. King of All Kings is a solid death metal album. Having Grossmann on drums, which is a fact I didn't know previously, will undoubtedly push this music in the right direction.

I just got a promo for the upcoming debut album by Traitor's Gate. I'm not very familiar with the EP they released in the 80s but this material sounds excellent so far. Set for release on May 25th.

I can’t honestly tell if it’ll be out by the end of this year as they haven’t officially begun recording just yet, but Confessor is back and they’ve pretty much finished writing and demoing a new album and are fine tuning some last-minute details. Steve Shelton has a blog talking about the process so far here: https://thepoundry.blogspot.com

Depravity (Aus) - Evil Upheavel (April 30)

Blistering, blast-laden death metal that sits somewhere between Morbid Angel, Hour of Penance, The Furor (more Aussie brutality) etc.

I like it.

In other Shadow Kingdom news...

They just debuted the first single off of Alms' debut album Act One, called Dead Water. Freaking great! Dual female / male (clean) vocals, not unlike The Well, drenched in acid rock style organ... with riffs right out of Volume 1 era Pagan Altar! Really excited for this. According to MA, release date is September 7.

New Heavy Load album slated for 2019 (since there is no 2019 thread, I'm posting it in here).

Demo song extract on youtube, called Walhalla Warriors.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtiOZmb0vUY&feature=youtu.be

In certain ways, very much like their classic material, like the guitars and vocals. But also a pretty large dose of symphonics added.

First impressions: The guitar riffing was alright, but is a little lacking for 2018. Would've seemed far better if it came out in 1984. The symphonics are a little too "sweet" sounding for me. The vocals are great though.

Although I have my reservations, I am really curious how this will turn out and am eagerly awaiting it.

A new song, Tear Off the Veil Off [of?] the Sun, from Angel of Damnation's new album Heathen Witchcraft, has been posted on bandcamp:

https://shadowkingdomrecords.bandcamp.com/album/heathen-witchcraft

Very interesting... the debut was a doom metal album through and through, though a lot of it was up-tempo relatively speaking for the genre. This new song is almost exclusively 80s style (epic?) heavy metal, with only a little doominess coming in the second half. I thought lead singer Gerrit Mutz sounded a lot like Saint Vitus' Scott Reagers on the debut, which was a large part of its appeal for me. On this song he sounds a lot less like a Reagers-like madman and more melodic. Not what I was expecting at all. Not bad, but I didn't love it either. Still awaiting the full album, though!

I saw them live about a week and a half ago, apparently they recorded their new album in Poland and are planning to release it in July. Super excited, I love their style of blackened death.

In other news, also pumped for new Just Before Dawn, Nocturnal Graves, and Aura Noir in the coming weeks. New Vomitor just came out today and it slays as well. It's not a bad time right now for new releases.

Anyone heard the new Shylmagoghnar single? Maybe I'm overly excited, but this is easily the most impressive thing I've heard in 2018. What exceptional songwriting and impeccable sense of melody and tempo change. If the rest of the album is nearly as good as this, then it will easily be in my top 3 this year.

Japanese Amazon now has 45-second samples for all the songs on Mary's Blood's new album, Revenant. WHICH STILL HASN'T APPEARED ON REGULAR AMAZON. OR ANYWHERE ON THE INTERNET.

And these samples got me rock-hard. AOTY, right here. "Tsukiyomi" and "R.I.P." are confirmed neck-breakers.

It's finally coming! New York Doomsters Orodruin releasing their second album in February 2019 on Shadow Kingdom Records!

Unfortunately though, long time drummer Mike Waske steps down.

Click for facebook post

This development must be why there was no second John Gallow album, which was supposed to be released this past December 20. Pretty frickin weird though that John would say literally nothing about it online and proceed to delete the facebook pages of almost all of his other current bands without a word.

I wonder if any material that was meant for the second John Gallow album will appear on the new Orodruin? And how much, if any?

So according to a new interview with David DeFeis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zuo26cv ... e=youtu.be) there will be a boxed set out in some months ahead featuring Hymns to Victory, The Book of Burning and two new discs in there; one will feature mostly live orchestral versions of ''classic'' VS tracks, which could be cool considering I liked the live bonus disc of the Invictus reissue. The second disc will feature new material that should be a mix of bluesy/gothic-y/epic VS stuff.

I'll put it simple: if DeFeis will sound tolerable, this material could be rather good. The second disc of Nocturnes of Hellfire & damnation was better than the actual regular disc, after all. Of course here's hoping Pursino will be more involved again, but even if he won't, these new songs could still be decent, assuming the new material won't be very metallic to begin with.

^ It pains me to write this as I love Skeletonwitch, this might be their first album I give a hard pass to. That song sounds absolutely nothing like the band anymore at all. For a post-black kind of thing it’s fine, but that’s not their style nor is it a logical evolution of it and there’s plenty of other bands already established with it. Where’s the thrash and death and melodic influences? Where did the riffs go? Even the titles and artwork come off as a deliberate attempt to distance themselves. If it’s the only song like it I suppose that’s tolerable. I’ve got a feeling they’ve completely and unnecessarily overhauled everything, though.

I was just able to give the song a full listen and unfortunately I agree. I found it enjoyable but it's nothing like their previous work which was what I was hoping for.

So far three songs have been released and holy cow! - If you want old school Swe-Death then this album is gonna blow off your pants :D
And seeing that Ihsahn & Thy Catafalque release albums on the same day it's gonna be quite a day.

So May 18th from Sepuchral Voice Records is a new Necros Christos album. Domedon Doxomedon is a 3xCD or 3xLP format with quite a lengthy run time. Been a while since Doom of the Occult, so I'm keen to see what this has to offer. There are the obligatory by now interludes and Temples, and a few songs that are over the ten minute mark, which will be interesting for mine to say the least. Hopefully it will still have the Necros Christos stamp of quality.

I actually don't think that Skeletonwitch song is that bad, nor a drastic departure from their old style (at least from what I remember of them...it's been a while since I've spun any of their albums).

Re: The new Skeletonwitch song sounds pretty good. I understand some people being disappointed by the shift, but I think if any band can make atmospheric/melodic black metal work it's theses guys. They've always had a satisfying grasp on how to write a good melodic riff, even on their earlier thrashy releases (Burned From Bone off Serpents Unleashed is a good example), so I'm pretty excited to see what they do with the genre, presuming the rest of the album is similar to this single.

I generally don't listen to preview songs and just like to wait until the album comes out, but this talk of Skeletonwitch moving in a more gloomy melodic/atmospheric black metal direction has me very excited after their last ep. I'm tempted to point to the new vocalist as an influence on their newfound style (his voice is more black metal than the last guy, and when I saw them on tour for the ep he had a Revenge or Conqueror shirt), but as PvtNinjer pointed out, there were inklings of metamorphosis on their previous material, both on that song he mentioned and especially on the wonderful opening/closing riffs of "Under a Cloudless Sky."
