So, for the band Nails, do you guys think it would be incorrect if I just labeled them as grindcore when talking about them? Hardcore punk and metal have a lot of intersections (especially grindcore and hardcore punk) so in your opinion would it be wrong to label them as metal? Thanks, just curious as to what people think.

I've heard them called grind and powerviolence, but they have death metal and thrash metal influence too.

Thanks for the reply! So basically, I could just call them grindcore/metal and I wouldn't be wrong? Like I've seen things saying their hardcore punk and the like, but it seems like their sound is almost the same to other bands considered grindcore.

You could instead be pretentious and say that you don't pay attention to genres and just listen to MUSIC. Chicks totally dig that.

I neurotically have to know what genre to call a band sometimes, but at the same time I don't want to have to list a bunch of genres when I'm talking so it's a bit of a contradiction.

When a band gets into genre territory that's murky and unnecessarily complicated, the easiest solution is to just label them as the #1 primary thing that they are, to make things simple.

If X band is mostly death metal but also bandies about with thrash metal, black metal, and crust punk influences in their sound, it's probably easiest to just call them death metal and save the details when further inquiries are made.

Nails play grindcore. yes they have insert-genre-here influences, but most grind bands do. It's not exactly a purebred style.

Thanks for the clarification, that makes it a lot easier to list the genres I like.

Nails aren't Metalcore, though.

It's totally okay to label an artist as more than one style as long as it's appropriate, for instance in my library I have Nails tagged as Powerviolence, Grindcore, Hardcore Punk, Crust Punk and Sludge. I usually use rateyourmusic, or my own intuition to determine which tags to use and try to avoid terms like "Metal," "Electronic," etc.

Also, Deep Purple is a metal band.

You will Never be One of Us: From the latest album, fair bit of HM2 abuse here
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hGGGh03jN4w

Suum Cique: Total elephant marching riffage on this one, also dig the rough transitions here
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GXd8DVlGvsY

Wide Open Wounds: Similar to the one above but more sludgy and brooding
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=c4nV8WV-EDY

I keep returning to these three for some reason. I'd strongly recommend that you check out their whole discography as all their releases combined don't even amount to a couple of hours in duration.

As for the OP I think the description on MA covers most of their sound. I personally consider them an extremely heavy hardcore band with influences from all over.

I really enjoy this one riff from the song "You Will Never Be One of Us."
I also like the song "Unsilent Death", and the songs mentioned earlier by the other person (didn't see their name, sorry to that person) are also good. Really any of their songs.

Thanks for the reply! That seems like a good description too. I may just keep calling them grindcore since I'm too lazy to be specific.

Don't want to sound snobby but i hate the term "Powerviolence" even though i like many bands that recieve that label. As far as i know the powerviolence term was coined by the Slap-A-Ham label to describe some of their Hardcore/Grincore bands.

At the end of the day i end up calling Nails a Hardcore/Grindcore band.

it came from here (this song is about a show played by the bands listed at the beginning and how there was a tiny latino man there moshing hard as fuck) basically if you sound like any of the listed bands, you probably play pv

most people in pv bands back in the day didn't really like the term but nobody could think of anything that fit better so it stuck.
