I'm wondering if there are many instances of these.. I'm not talking about litterature in general (Lovecraft, Tolkien), mythology or horror movies, for there should be about 1 million of those.

Only comic books (or graphic novels) and video games.

When Sylvain Houde fronted Kataklysm, he sometimes wrote lyrics influenced by an RPG game called "Ultima". More specifically those references are found in "The Vortex of Resurrection" trilogy, first recorded in 1993 (and later as "The Rebirth Vortex of Creation", 1995), and in "Shrine of Life", first recorded in 1992. Of course he had other influences blended in, mostly from the Simon Necronomicon. Elements borrowed from Ultima are gargoyles and their language (ver amo cor, i ves tas..).

The other case that comes to mind is Voïvod. On Rrröööaaarrr (1985) they have a song called "Korgüll the Exterminator". Only 2 years earlier, this Belgian graphic novel / comic book called "La Saga de Thorgull" (https://www.bedetheque.com/BD-Scrameust ... -3207.html) came out. Körgull and Thorgull are very similar names. If not a coincidence, it may even have been unconscious. At any rate, the song lyrics are very general and could apply to any vilain. The comic book on the other hand is quite safe and tame; Thorgull is an evil robot from outer space.

Then of course Anthrax with "I am the Law" (1986), influenced by Judge Dredd back when he was just a comic book character.

I'm fairly certain the Battleroar song Vampire Killer is about the Castlevania video game franchise.

EDIT: Also the Dexter Ward song Double Dragon about the Double Dragon video game franchise.

There's a number of bands drawing inspiration from the Elder Scrolls series (Daedroth, Daedric Tales, Boethiah, Tamriel, Vvardenfell and Jagar Tharn, to name a few).

Only ones that come to mind right now.

Obligatory mention: Bal-sagoth https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ba ... ab_members
Their entire discography is based on a graphic novel created by one of their founders.

Another famous one. Iced Earth - Dark Saga. A concept album (or so they say, I haven't checked the lyrics. Music's good tho) based on the spawn comic series. https://www.metal-archives.com/albums/I ... k_Saga/168

The Axis of perdition based some of their music and lyrics on Silent Hill, they even included some samples from the games. https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Th ... ition/7836

Bal-Sagoth's discography isn't based on a graphic novel, that came after those songs were written. The novel is based on the songs.

But, Bal-Sagoth did make a song about the Silver Surfer, Galactus and the Celestials and it rules.

I believe that "Thor the Powerhead" by Manowar is based on the comic book incarnation of Thor.

This demo by Dockalfar seems to be entirely inspired by Hexen

I'm fairly sure Tales from the Deadside by A Sound of Thunder is based on Shadowman (which I'm currently playing through, funnily enough).

I believe Novistador has lyrics influenced by Resident Evil, with the band/project name coming from an enemy in Resident Evil 4.

Sinergy - To Hell and Back had a song, "Gallowmere", which was about the PS1 game Medievil, haha:

There's a few Dark Souls and Bloodborne inspired bands on M-A, such as:

Kingdoms of Flesh, now called Soulmass

Yahar'gul

Sadly, they're pretty much always mediocre. :(

Chthe'ilist's debut has lyrics inspired by Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time. Also, Demilich take their name from Dungeons and Dragons (I'm sure D&D's influence on metal is enormous, but that's one specific example that comes to mind).

Sinergy also has "Alone in the Dark", based on the game of the same name, which I guess Alexi and Kimberly were obsessed with when they were married.

Lameass metalcore band Still Remains has a track called "AVALANCHE", based on Final Fantasy VII. I recall the song being bland and lame but I could be mistaken.

If I could be a dork I could also point out that the one stanza of lyrics I contributed to The Outer RIM (the "Thousand Curses" part in "Tower of Babel") were based on Persona 4, though the entire song isn't based on it

Bolt Thrower what?

Entombed's Wolverine Blues (1993) was not about the Marvel hero originally, but Earache cut a deal with Marvel. That's what it says on Wikipedia

There's Tarsonis about... well you'd guess it if you played Starcraft. I've only listened to them once or twice like 10 years ago and I remember I was actually surprised that they didn't suck. I totally forgot about the music now but it was quite nice. I can't find any youtube links though, everything I get is directly related to the video game.

I think they had a bunch of material about Warhammer 40k, if I'm not mistaken.

I also think that Blind Guardian should be mentioned here - "Sacred Worlds" was created for the video game Sacred 2, with the BG members even doing voice-overs for the German version of the game.

Abuser's song Stone Mask Overlord has lyrics based on JoJo's Bizzarre adventures

Discordance Axis have songs inspired from Evangelion in their last Album (The end of Rebirth, Angel Present, The Third Children)

Blacksoul Seraphim's two tracks of their last Ep are based on Dark Souls and Demon Souls, respectively.

Not only that but the name "Bolt Thrower" is literally the name of a unit of war that you can use in Warhammer. Not knowing Bolt Thrower is all about WH/WH40k is a serious blow to both nerd and metal cred.

The Dark Angel song "Darkness Descends" is taken from the Judge Dredd comics as well.

This should be fairly well-known by now, but a number of Battle Beast songs ("Band of the Hawk," "Iron Hand," "Victory," "Golden Age/Kingdom," "Touch in the Night," and "The Eclipse" specifically) are all based on the ongoing anime/manga series, Berserk.

Anthrax was mentioned before.

Honourable mention for Iron Man. The song is not about the Marvel character, but said character was created in 1963; the title could have been influenced by the character. At any rate, the 2008 movie's trailer featured an extract from the song. I haven't seen the movie, so I wouldn't know if the song features in it at all.

Also for Voïvod's 1987 short cover of the 60s Batman tv theme, itself influenced by the DC comics of the same name.

Anders/Blackheim sampled the original Diablo expansion Hellfire in Diabolical Masquerade's 'Nightwork' album. Can't remember which track but it lifted one of the bosses taunt's when the player encounters it and incorporated it into the lyrics.

Ahhh I remember it being repackaged with new artwork prominently featuring Wolverine on the cover as some sort of cash grab. Flimsiest tie-in ever if you ask me and felt so out of place.

Sonic Syndicate's Break of Day takes large chunks of dialogue from the superhero-themed TV show Heroes.

I know it doesn't exactly fit this topic, but it's the closest thing I can think of.

As for video games and I'm not sure if this counts, but Riot Games has hired some metal musicians to create some power stuff for League of Legends, most notably ZP Theart and Jørn Lande. It's even listed here on the Archives, it's Pentakill: https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Pe ... 3540382017.

Bilzzard has their own in house metal band of guys that worked on World of Warcraft called Elite Tauren Chieftan that do music for that game.
