Nearly three years in the making, SATYRICON have announced that 'Deep calleth upon Deep', their highly anticipated ninth studio album, is set for release on 22nd September via Napalm Records.

Recorded in Oslo, Norway and Vancouver, Canada, during early 2017 and mixed together with revered studio guru Mike Fraser (who previously worked on SATYRICON’s 2006 album, ‘Now, Diabolical’), ‘Deep calleth upon Deep’ is not just a new collection of songs from one of extreme music’s most enduring and reliable bands: this is a wholesale reinvention and a brand new era in SATYRICON history.

Frontman and visionary, Satyr informs us “Approaching this release, what I always kept in mind is that either this is the beginning of something new or it’s gonna be my last record. If this is going to be the last, then it needs to be something special. If there are more records, then I’d better make sure that this is so different from the last one that it feels like a new beginning. I think it’s really, really dark, very spiritual and filled with confidence and energy.”

‘Deep calleth upon Deep’ is a profound statement about the essence of SATYRICON’s music and the eternal value of art itself. Satyr continues, “The way that I see it is that for any art, be it SATYRICON or any other form of art with substance, in order for you to be able to inhale and completely understand it, it will take a little bit of you as well. If you get it all after a couple of listens, you know that it probably won’t stay with you. So the title is saying, ‘From the depth of the people making this record to the depth of the listener…’ If you want to take part in this journey, you should be prepared to dig deep down in the darkest corner of your soul with us."

SATYRICON is also proud to share the album’s front cover - an obscure drawing from 1898 by perhaps the greatest Norwegian artist of all time, Edvard Munch.

SATYRICON have always excelled as a live band, their evocative performances increasingly becoming special events as their frequency is dialled back to accommodate the Oslo band’s new ‘modus operandi’. The band are set to play a European run of dates in support of Deep calleth upon Deep:

Can't really explain why I'm looking forward to this, although I suspect I'm on a memberberry binge. For me, the last interesting thing they released was Volcano, and that was 15 years ago. Still, I can't help but to feel excited, which I'll probably regret...

The little snippets posted on their page already sound better than the previous album. I get the feeling that the band is inspired and I hope that this will be the case with this new record.

I instantly fell in love with this one in particular but the rest of them sound promising to say the least.

Loved the S/T album hope its in that vein. Yeah, I like Volcano and the other heavier albums but the S/T to me, shows a more mature and organic approach to the Satyricon sound.

Technically the best one is Shadowthrone but DMT is a very special album for me.

Last work was bland and boring as f*ck, almost anything can be better. Not excited but curious...

i've found most of their music since nemisis divina pretty boring
the s/t album was boring too
if it wasnt for Frosts phenomenal drumming they would be even worse

would love them to bring out something i can get into, here's hoping

"A lot of what we did in the beginning is relentless, violent and aggressive. It's not like it's sobbing or really sad now, but it's more percussive, varied and soulful. There's less emphasis on the aggressive violent part of it."

Just make another Wongraven record if you need to focus on "less aggressive" music. I never needed Satyricon to blast at 666 bpm all the time to be good to my ears, but the last albums (post-Volcano) have been as dull as it gets - are they actively trying to make that flatline even flatter now? Oh gawd...

The second or third snippet sounds better, more powerful and faster, the rest sound tedious and bland. The one you have mentioned is too short to judge it.

The new album will feature Norwegian jazz musician, Håkon Kornstad, who will play saxophone and add some vocal textures. Don't know what to think but my expectations have not been lowered at all. Let's wait and see.

I do not understand this statement at all, isn't exactly that what the band has been doing after Nemesis Divina? moving away from the "violent, agressive" vibe of earlier stuff? Are they seriously implying albums like Satyricon are violent and aggressive in any way?

I was gonna say, the first time I heard sax in metal was Ihsahn. Then Norwegian Shining changed their sound and I think it really took off from there.

Earliest instance of sax in metal I can recall is Another Day by Dream Theater, probably not the best example since AD is not exactly a metal song but at least it was done by a Metal Band way back in the day before it was considered "cool".

Solefald did it before in Red for Fire and they've been using it ever since. Maybe Ihsahn took the idea from there.

I know Warfare used saxophone on their 1988 album, 'A Conflict of Hatred'. Surprised Celtic Frost never used it in their early years. I can imagine one being played on 'Into the Pandemonium'. But apparently not.

Am I the only person who loves the self-titled record or what? I thought it was a pretty great album and very atmospheric but then again I wouldn't say it is their best work either. Overall it still holds up well for me after a few years and I still find myself listening to it fairly often, it actually aged better than I had expected it would when I first picked it up when it came out.

As for the new album I am absolutely excited but that is partially because Satyricon is good at spacing out their releases in a way that allows plenty of time to develop their sound between albums. Whatever they do I doubt it will be bad by any means.

Wouldn't say I love S/T, but it's a good album. Now Diabolical is the one I come back to most often. At heart I'm still a rock/punk guy and love a good hook. Sure, Satyricon approach it from a tighter, more accessible way than other bands I glom to (e.g. Midnight, Abigail, Bulldozer, NME) but they pull it off, and with style.

Looking forward to this new one. Incorporating saxophone will be, at the least, an interesting experiment. If Nattefrost and company can make it work, it ain't rocket science. Also, X Ray Spex kicked ass with the sax.

Polish Nightly Gale did the sax thing on their debut some 17 years ago. What's the fuss really? Many do it, or any other brass instrument in metal, and when you do it right, you do it right.
Does anyone really need another lukewarm Satyricon album, when all one really needs to listen to are the band's first 3 albums, or even only to the beautiful, majestic, dark and unique debut? I sure don't.

Now Diabolical is great as well and I tend to listen to that one quite a bit as well. I think there was something about the s/t one that I really appreciated from an artistic prospective. The song Pheonix still blows my mind but then again I am into deathrock and old school goth rock so that is probably why. I definitely like the rock n' roll and punk vibes that are on Now Diabolical and I agree that they are cleaner than other bands in the style but it is also not a bad thing. I would say that Now Diabolical inspired a bit of stuff on my band's latest album but we have always incorporated the whole sleazy rock n' roll deal to our sound.

One thing I like about modern Satyricon is that they found a niche that bridges black metal with the attitude of rock n' roll and they don't try to fit the whole "kvlt" element of black metal and aren't afraid to dip into mainstream sounds. In a lot of cases I would loathe that but the way Satyricon does it is quite tasteful.

It is actually the most violent and aggresive stuff. Ahh those years when many classic bands copied the industrial sound... RB is indeed an interesting album, quite different from the rest of their discography.

I didn't say that, it is, but I find it slightly lighter than Nemesis Divina, the album where they showed their most violent, chaotic and aggressive side. Revel Extravaganza is more acid and direct, from there onwards they started to slow things down and continued that path until their latest album which is anything but violent and aggressive.
