I've always pronounced Celtic Frost as Keltic Frost and literally the only other time I use Seltic is if I'm talking about the Celtic Bostons basketball team.

I've always pronounced it as "drood - kuh" but who knows if that's right.

One that really bugs me is Arsaidh/Saor. He changed the name from Arsaidh to Saor because of pronunciation issues... How is Saor any easier to pronounce? Sore? Sour? Say - or? I actually found Arsaidh easier to pronounce as "Ar - sayed"

He's right, and its how I've always known it to be. Tom Fischer himself pronounces it this way.

It's unclear whether Mutiilation is pronounced "Mutilation" or "Mu-tee-lation", so I just say "Mutilation" to avoid embarrassment.

Also, I know Varg pronounces "Burzum" with a long "u" sound and a kind of weird rolled "r". Tolkein pronounces it with long u's without the rolled "r".
Me and most metalheads I know pronounce it "Berzum" out of habit, and because any English speaker would sound ridiculous saying it the way Varg does.

Drudkh??? I can only imagine "drood" followed by a hacking sound in the back of my throat, so I avoid saying it altogether for fear of sounding Jewish..... :boo:

A lot of those foreign names you can figure out easy with google translate's voice function - like Peste noire, taake, tsjuder, etc. One I'm not really about how to pronounce is !T.O.O.H! - You could just say the obliteration of humanity, but not everybody would know what you're talking about. Is it just simply "Too"? And despite how Tom pronounces Celtic, it can be pronounced either way, unless that was a conscious and intentional decision made by the band.

According to an older metalhead friend of mine, there was some old interview, maybe on MTV or something, with Tom Warrior and Martin Ain where they were saying "Seltic", which is where the confusion could be..... Can't be sure though, can't find the interview they were referring to :???:
He seems pretty bitchy about saying "Keltic" nowadays.
Japanese presses of their CDs also label them "Serutiku Furosuto" in Katakana.

.....and there's also the S.O.D. song.....

I like it. It's a very Brazilian take on standard blasphemous metal covers. Satan's androgyny makes him seem more symbolic.

If you want a bad Sepultura cover look at that stupid CGI bird guy on mkII's last album.

Krisiun. CRY-SEE-UN? KRIS-EE-UN? KRIS-YOON? CRY-SHUN?

Akeldema. AH-KUL-DIMA? AKULL-DIMA? AH-KULL-DEE-MA? AKEL-DEMA?

I definitely know there's more than just those. I've certainly stumbled across this problem when in a rare instance of a metal conversation because I rarely say these names out loud. And when I go to mention a band I've probably been listening to for years, it always comes out like, "yeah, that one band they're called something like..." and then I just sound like an idiot. It's almost like having to learn a new language.

I heard from someone who knows the language that said it was pronounced as "drood-kh". I don't know if he's correct but that's the way I started saying Drudkh from that point on. The kh-sound being a long k during exhaling.

Varg clearly pronounces it in a Scandinavian way. We often have clear and rolling r's and the u-sound he uses is also very Scandinavian. I say it the same way he does. If that is because I have heard him use it that way or because I myself am Scandinavian (and the language it comes from isn't actually a real language) I don't know.

Otherwise a classic example is Motörhead. Since I'm Swedish I tend to actually pronounce it with the Ö-sound even though I know I shouldn't. It was just a fad for bands to add diacritic marks over randomly selected letters in band names. I find it works out nicely and doesn't sound to off since I do pronounce the rest in an English way. The Ö isn't that pronounced then.

Sounds like latin to me which would probably mean its closer to a pronunciation without the sh-sound.

"Am-ay-seurh" (with the slight gutteral 'r' at the end), I believe.
Even if my French grammar is effroyable, I'd say my pronunciation is somewhat alright.

But no, the name I have a problem with pronouncing is Lyfthrasyr.
I just get to "Lyfththh" and give up because I'm probably never gonna talk about them to anybody in real life anyway.

Post subject:  Re: What bands do you mispronounce?

generally bands like Beherit, belial and others whose name is referred to mythology or traditional demonology should be pronunced in the italian way (that is standard pronounce for latin and greek as well as for transliterating non western languages such as chinese, japanese, arabic: no nationalism or chauvinism at all, it's just an international language convention).
While french or latin bands bands should be pronounced as in their original language and it can give some troubles to those not used with french (as me, for example, totally negated in it)

So Belial should be pronounced Beh Lee Al
Beherit should be Beh heh reet

Russian bands have a quite plain pronouce similar to italian, but vowels without accent has different sound

for example: Voda (water) should be pronounced Vadà (accent is on the last vowel, so the first wovel changes from "O" to "A")

Teatr Tenej should be pronounced Tiatr Tyenyej ("E" becomes "I" in the first word because accent is on the "A", while it keeps it's original sound of "ye" in the second word) and in general russian "е" is pronounced as "ye" (except when it's after "T" or "D", while "ё" always sounds as "yo" (Пётр = Pёtr = Piotr)

Never heard that outside America Celtic Frost is pronounced Keltic....this is the very first time I hear such variant
