I was listening to some Saxon a couple days ago and I noticed that Power And The Glory's title track has a riff that is eerily similar to Dio's Stand Up and Shout. Even came out the same year.

Birdflesh - Moonwalk Massacre
Death - Pull the Plug

When I was growing up, videoclips were a new thing, and "Talking in your Sleep" by the New Romantics was a song that I liked, and so I remember its video pretty well (I guess the lingerie also left its mark on an impressionable 8 year old boy). Long story short, I eventually got into metal, then classic rock, and became some kind of completist when it comes to Deep Purple family stuff, so I didn't stop at the "good" Rainbow period but also dug into the JLT era. When I happened upon the "Stone Cold" (1982) video sometime in the late 90s, I couldn't help but finding similarities with the New Romantics video, which I hadn't seen in about 15 years by then, basically, the idea of "frozen women" in a blue surrounding while the band plays. But I immediately dismissed this as Rainbow having copied a more famous video/song, just like in these days, they seemed to copy sonic elements from Foreigner, Loverboy and other AOR bands.

Until I checked the dates, recently, and Rainbow's video actually came out in 1982, while the New Romantics', in late 1983 ! Always great when a mainstream band borrows from a metal-family band.

Two other songs with very similar riffs are "Hellbound" by Tygers of Pan Tang and "Drive Like Hell" by Banshee. The former came out in 1982, while the latter was released several years later.

I just remembered this song by Ding an Sich also using the same pattern:

I think it has been a famous pattern since Pink Floyd; also found in this song from the 70s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTpYXQABkco

I wonder if any other metal song than Amorphis' Smithereens has it.

Napalm Death - Breed to Breathe
Guilty Gear X (Daisuke Ishiwatari) - A Solitude That Asks Nothing In Return
(Guilty Gear XX version)

Props to a Gamefaqs user for making me aware of this one, I'd have never caught it.

Motley Crue's "Dr. Feelgood" opening guitar intro, the first 30 seconds or so, is the same riff from Killing Joke's "Love Like Blood." They could have easily just stumbled upon that same rhythm while jamming, but of course, could have subconsciously picked it up after hearing the song or seeing that Killing Joke video, or deliberately tried to write a song based around that simple, cool, chugging, palm muted guitar rhythm on the low E string. Really different songs though, love 'em both.

"Thunderkiss 65" by White Zombie shares a similar guitar rhythm, but not quite the same as with these two here.

Super Punch Out - Mad Clown (1994)

sounds like...

Macabre - Zodiac (1993)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBsDYXZOzEg&t=1m51s

I swear this is based on some folk song though. Somewhat weird though.

One mor far fetched..

The chorus vocal melody in Alexis Utatnaq's Maqaivvigivalauqtavut (doesn't it just roll off the tongue !) sounded like something familiar and I struggled for days to realize what it was..

Listen for yourself here from 33 s to 49 s:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6U2aUNAtpw#t=32s
if the video is available in your country.

If it isn't, then try this bandcamp page:
https://nativenorthamerica-variousartis ... alauqtavut
forward to 33s

What is this melody ???

Well, to me, it's the guitar track from Black Sabbath's Solitude (1971):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmV8niW5GXs
and to a lesser extent, its vocal track.

I don't know when Alexis Utatnaq's song was written / recorded, but I have good reason to believe it was around 1978.

I don't know what Maqaivvigivalauqtavut means, but it has something to do with hunting.

I recall seeing youtube videos years and years ago entitled "Metal and rock that sounds like other metal and rock". There were AT LEAST a dozen episodes. Some of the similarities were ridiculously close, while others were grasping at straws.

edit: Here is a link to the youtube page for anyone that wants to waste hours of their time. Looks like there are 34 "episodes" now.

On Warbringer's first album, there's a couple of songs that sound like Municipal Waste, especially Total War (Warbringer) and Breathe Grease ( MW)

- Warbringer

- MW

Pop Will Eat Itself - Familius Horribilius

Sounds like...

Black Sabbath - Symptom of the Universe

For all I know this might be a KMFDM - Godlike sort of thing (that song directly samples a riff from Slayer - Angel of Death and loops it)

Some people are going to get shocked by this, but the GoT main melody was already used in Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones (by John Williams)

Not so much instrumentally, but listen to the vocal melodies.

Jameson Raid "Seven Days of Splendour":
https://youtu.be/Xlc-H8Jwny8

Black Sabbath "Age of Reason":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UN2JETFKYaE

Heh, there are probably oodles of examples of other bands lifting ideas from Sabbath. But it does sometimes happen the other way around too!

Here's a weird one:

Those opening riffs. Maybe the Japanese thrashers were fans of lesser known 90s alt rock. Wouldn't put it past them.

Anvil very blatantly ripped off the main riff of Black Sabbath's Sweet Leaf for the main riff of World of Tomorrow from their latest album.

Anvil - World of Tomorrow

It's so blatant and so prominent that I am seriously wondering if Sabbath could sue them if they felt so inclined.

Holy shit, that really is blatant. I imagine they'd pull the "paying homage" card, but damn. That's crazy.

Six Feet Under - 'Missing Victims' at 0:44

The chorus riffs of Motorhead's "In The Black" and Sodom's "Rolling Thunder" are nearly identical. Seeing as Tom Angelripper's favorite band is Motorhead it's not really surprising at all but it's still cool upon first notice.

Did someone just mention a band ripping themselves off... ?
The intros to Death's Zombie Ritual is similar to Within the Mind's, with the latter slowed down and slightly beefed up after a few seconds of similarity. Funnily enough they are only three years apart so it must not have gone without Chuck noticing.

Main riff off of Sotajumala's Pommitus, at 0:37:

Sounds a bit too similar to Zyklon's Core Solution (which came later):

I always thought that the chorus riff on this song:

Sounded exactly like the bridge riff on Maiden's "Out of the Silent Planet"

So much that during the chorus of "The Winged Panther" I always want to belt out "Out of the silent planet! Out of the silent planet we ahhhhre!"
