Stratovarius - Twilight Time

I've never listened to this album before, and so far it's really good! Definitely a big improvement from what I've heard of 'Fright Night', and about even with 'Dreamspace'.

this is so inventive and all around amazing. Doing a split with him. This is something that needs to be heard if you want to go as far as progression and experimentation can psychedelically go.

Late 80s German crossover. Good shit.

Rush - Xanadu

Still a goddamn legend. I say it's enough to include them on MA. So many later bands, particularly in prog and power metal, would use this kind of structure and dynamic.

Moonsorrow - Havitetty

Once every 3 months or so I'll go into a Moonsorrow only diet and for whatever reason been checking Havitetty a lot. Think this might be my favorite of their albums (Verisakeet and Kivenkantaja are 95+ in my book). Goddamn chills with this one, how do you cram so many good ideas into a song without sounding bloated?

That song always represented everything I loved about progressive rock. And when that riff kicks in after the intro.... I can't think of anything that I would change, guitars, bassline, drum patterns, vocals, lyrics....just fucking perfect. Thank the maker I got to see them play it live before they retired and even at 55+ they fucking smoked it.

Fuck I love Rush, even the 80's stuff.

Shape Of Despair - ...To Live For My Death

This album has such an immense sound to it and this song is the zenith of it.

Seventh Wonder - Unbreakable

Aside from seeing them at ProgPower a few years ago, this is really my first time listening to Seventh Wonder. I'm digging them. I was familiar with Tommy Karevik from his work with Kamelot, and while he does a fine job with that band, he sounds more at home in SW... which, of course, makes sense, since he's not tasked with having to fill someone else's (huge) shoes here.

Ignea - How I Hate the Night

"The Sign of Faith" gives me some Myrath vibes, and I ain't complaining. I dig it.

I really, really wish Kamelot would take more advantage of Tommy's range and abilities. The dude's a fantastic singer, one of the best (much like Khan actually). I feel like they've kind of put him in a box, and this is coming from someone that likes the Tommy albums and has seen the band twice with him at the helm. "Mercy Falls" is great, by the way. Also, I'm really looking forward to the new Seventh Wonder album.

@LycanthropeMoon: Yeah, he does seem a bit under-used. I like the albums they've done with him, but they never seem to rise above the level of 'pretty good'. They used to be great frequently, even usually, back when they had Khan. Speaking of Khan, what do you think about Conception being back together?

NP: Myrath - Wide Shut

Continuing with the 'albums I've never heard before' trend here. And once again, I wish I'd listened to this years ago. Not sure why I didn't, since they totally blew me away live. Ah well....

The day they announced their crowdfunding campaign, I donated - Khan is probably my favorite power metal vocalist of all time, and he's a great lyricist to boot. Conception were fairly underrated from what I can tell - I really love "Parallel Minds". Myrath are absolutely fantastic, btw.

also...
Tiamat - A Pocket Size Sun
"Wildhoney" is probably one of my favorite goth metal albums of the 90s. I dig the prog rock influence on here for sure.

today-

Seven Sisters Of Sleep: Ezekiel's Hags Picked this up for a buck a few months back & it's pretty badass. Don't like the cover art but lovin' the music

UNLEASHED: Midvinterblot Intricate & awesome with some absolutely SMOKING guitar solos

Eric Dolphy: Out To Lunch Great hard-bop late 60s jazz classic ... love the vibraphones on here (by Bobby Hutcherson) especially. Also some Django Reinhardt and Opeth's ORCHID in the cd player

First listening. Got a bunch of cd's and lp's from a friend, who abandoned materialism, hah. Have a feeling that I'm going to like this. Heavier than the first album.

Black Majesty - Children of the Abyss

This is pretty fucking good so far. Much rawer and hungrier than their last several. Surprised at how intense it is. The vocal production is a bit wonky but I am getting used to it. Gio is one of the best around, even now.

SR was one of the 80's bands that got heavier as they went along, at least until Bach left.

Decapitated - Anger Line

I think I'm now in a Decapitated phase. Time to order another record, the question is, get Blood Mantra or go back and get one of the early tech DM records. I've been listening to tracks off various records on YT and not sure if I want to go back to the early stuff or more of the later material that is more in line with this. Winds or Nihility...or Carnival or Blood Mantra....maybe just get them all.

Yeah, Heartwork is fucking great, and by extension, so is Swansong. Carcass probably peaked with Necrotocism though.

Alright so I'm not much of Dio (as in the band) fan at all but there's something about Lock up the Wolves that really resonates with me - this bluesy style just worked well for this band.

Solstice - White Horse Hill

Soaring, towering, monolithic, massive, etc...
I think this recent era of the band is superior to their 90s era, which is no small accomplishment.
