NP: Folkvang - Dead Flower

There's a thread asking what melodic black metal is. This is melodic black metal. Such an underrated band, Six Stories Without Keys is a gorgeous album.

Death Angel - "Final Death"

Death Angel's debut is no doubt their best. It simply bleeds with youthful exuberance and energy which translated to a bunch of great thrash songs.

Godflesh - "Wound"

Cold and harsh, there's a militaristic tone to the industrial beat as its akin to the soundtrack of parading soldiers.

Shambles - "Primitive Death Trance"

This song sums it up for Thailand's Shambles' music. It has thick ass riffs that envelop the song that has doomy parts which occasionally speed up beat-wise but the riffs remain slow. Fans of Coffins and Anatomia will absolutely love this.

Never see this band mentioned here. I wasn't even aware that they released another album last year. Will have to check it out.

Deceased - "Unwanted Memories"

One of my favorite tracks from 'As the Weird Travel On'. This was the first Deceased album I heard and I was pleasantly surprised how melodic Deceased sounded. I expected them to sound more like the typical '90s old-school death metal. Not that I don't like listening to OSDM, but I guess the melodicism really struck me and I immediately dug it.

Malokarpatan - Nordkarpatenland (full)

This caught my attention because of its high placement on many AOTY list.

I don't know why, but i expected an eastern european Sigh: in reality it's way more restrained and mentally sane, even there is no shortage of strange moments and classy riffs. Great stuff!

Dark Tranquillity - Atoma (2016)

Had almost given up on them so was surprised how much I enjoyed this. Strongest when they're at full throttle but the brooding stomper Faithless by Default and alt-rock Clearing Skies were standouts. Oh and that coverart is fantastic.

I just started getting into these guys recently and I'm really digging it. Especially the gothic era stuff.

NP: Between the Buried and Me - Condemned to the Gallows

New Between the Buried and Me. Looking forward to this album. They got a little too noodly-prog for my liking after the Great Misdirect, which is not to say that the material is bad (Parallax II has some of the band's best moments) it's just a bit too far removed from what made me love Silent Circus through Colors. But this new song is the closest I've heard them sound to that era in awhile. I'm digging this track quite a bit more than anything I heard off of Coma Ecliptic, so I am pretty hyped.

Does Rob Lowe sound close to what he did on the early Solitude Aeturnus stuff though? I've heard his voice deteriorated quite a bit over the years. :(

NP: Hooded Menace - Sempiternal Grotesques

I'm still amazed by how good Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed is. It features interesting melodic characters that really add some emotional depth but fortunately also possesses massive, oppressive riffs that demand one to get caught into this powerful piece of art. Wonderful.

His stuff with Candlemass is the best he's ever sounded imho, even better than the early days of SA. His voice got deeper and gravellier. Apparently his live performances were an entirely different story but for studio albums he's never sounded bad.

Manowar - The Lord of Steel

Been a regular listening for the past few months. Quite a misunderstood album, I think. Songs like Black List and Born in a Grave are fucking cool, just so fucking rebellious! Even the bass sounds good on the latter one. Expendable seems to be the only song that doesn't get me moving.

I agree, I thought he was a perfect fit for Candlemass and I was really looking forward to hearing more albums with him on them. Sucks that things didn't work out. :(

Dismember - Dreaming in Red

My favorite song off of Indecent and Obscene. That bass line at the beginning is so hypnotizing and really does give the sense of the song representing something of a hazy, blood soaked dream.

Virgin Steele - Rising Unchained

Virgin Steele bug the shit out of me; they can do some really amazing music when David DeFeis is on the ball but a lot of their earlier albums have this really gross, borderline pedophilic sexual posturing while the later ones are completely bloated and silly and repetitive, while The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Pt. II sits right in the middle and is thus the one I consistently enjoy from start to finish with no songs that make me want to grab David DeFeis and go, "Dave! Dave! Is this really necessary?" God I love this album. I hope it gets a remix one day--not some bullshit "remaster" but a complete do-over of the production to audiophile standards, starting with the original studio tapes. It deserves one.

Flayed Alive - The Infernal Discernment

Track 5 off Zack Plunkett's solo project Flayed Alive's "The Enigmas of Deistic Torment". Really like the vocals on this. The guitars could be a bit higher in the mix, though.

NP: Zuriaake's live set at Festival Midi Pro (2016). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4k5BGBPw80

Watching this gave me the chills. As good as this band is on record, their live show looks absolutely enchanting. Maybe if we're really lucky, they'll come to the states one day...
