Catamenia-The Day The Sun Faded Away

Man the vocals on this song AND on the album are low for some reason, solid tune too. Loved these guys.

Greta Van Fleet - Flower Power

This is pretty badass old school rock. The vocals are fucking wild and the guitars have a real genuine retro vibe. Digging it...

Scorpions - Life's Like a River

I like 80's Scorpions well enough, but this band made absolute magic with Uli Jon Roth. God damned breathtaking.

It's pretty sad how underrated he is, really. Worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Hendrix, Van Halen and other pioneers.

NP: Ministry - Vex and Siolence

Dark Side of the Spoon gets a lot of shit for not being as ferocious as Ministry usually is, but it's an A-/+ album. You just have to think of it as Al's soundtrack to a missing David Lynch film or some shit. One of their best albums.

Hammerfall - "The Dragon Lies Bleeding"

Hammerfall through their debut album contributed to giving the metal scene a needed kick in the butt back in 1997. Back then metal was all but dead as its major players released mediocre efforts. And then like a valiant, shining knight Hammerfall came out of nowhere to infuse a fresh, new take on heavy metal.

Judas Priest - "Hell Patrol"

1990 was such a landmark year for metal. There were so many awesome releases that year. Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer released milestone albums. Judas Priest also came back strong after a couple of weak releases. When 'Painkiller' came out I was surprised with how heavy, intense and thrash-y it sounded. It was like a statement album that they were not resting on their past achievements and they still had something very modern to contribute to the metal scene. And contribute they did, 'Painkiller' stands as one of their best releases.

Destroyer 666 - "I AM the Wargod (Ode to the Battle Slain)"

The perfect soundtrack to a field battle with swords, spears and shields clashing while blood and guts gushing.

Except in 95-96 Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Running Wild and Iced Earth and Motorhead were all releasing amazing efforts. and they were about the same level, if not higher than Hammerfall. You make it sound like Metal Age was getting as much mainstream airplane as efforts by Korn and Limp Bizkit in 97.

Yeah I guess it's debatable whether or not Hammerfall was a leader in the resurgence of less extreme metal in the late 90s or just a natural consequence of the reinvigoration that was given to the style thanks to Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, et al, and it's hard to overstate just how hugely popular they were, but to say they singlehandedly saved metal in 97 is laughable.

I mean i don't want to take anything away from Hammerfall, and they were certainly valuable soldiers in the resurgence started by the 95 power metal explosion, but calling them the sole reason completely ignores said explosion.

Okay, I take it back and edited my wording. Although I was speaking from a personal perspective. But I agree on your point that the bands you mentioned were making strong albums at that stage. But some of it sounded stale and Hammerfall had a fresh take on the old familiar heavy metal sound.

I've been waiting for new D666 pretty eagerly, but I'm really not liking this. There's a solid riff there, but the vocals sound hilariously uninspired.

Yeah, I think I'm pretty much feeling the same way about this. Although I'd say even some of the riffs sound uninspired.

NP: Deathspell Omega - The Synarchy of Molten Bones
Took long enough, but I'm starting to come around to a new appreciation for this album. The short run-time is still a valid criticism, but I'm over it now (it did comprise the majority of my initial hangups when this album came out). The title track is up there with some of their best stuff, and that ending is brilliantly jarring. I still think this would have gone over a lot better if it were an EP rather than the followup to an illustrious streak of full lengths, but for what the album is, it's fantastic stuff.

Awwwww yeah, that's right. I'm back up in this bitch, shamelessly plugging an album from 2013. The one that still doesn't have one review. One. Single. Goddamn. Review. AND I WILL NEVER STOP GOD ITS SO GOOD GUYS. But on the topic of this song, it probably contains approximately 18 of my favourite riffs of all time. And two of my favourite solos! I'm completely incapable of not breaking out my air guitar for the entire duration of Sanctuary in Abyss. I'm not sure anyone on this planet is up to that challenge.

Halfway through this record right now, as I've pretty much been hunting down any solid death/thrash I can find, so thanks for this recommendation! I do like it a bit more aggressive than technical, but nevertheless, the guitar work on this album is indeed bonkers. Good stuff!

Mammoth Grinder - Cogs in the Machine

Their new album is set to come out in a couple weeks. Hoping they incorporate more death metal this time as opposed to more hardcore as was heard on Underworlds.

Something that isn't classic Motorhead. I didn't realize there was a streak going and I don't want to break it so pretend its No Sleep Til Hammersmith or something.

Spoiler: show
If you really want to know, here's a hint: Janick Gers is a much better slow soloist than he is a fast one.

Switching it up from Motorhead with

Sabaton - Solider of 3 Armies

I don't think anyone disliked communists as much as this guy. Too bad the follow up record blew. Then again I think you only need 2-3 Sabaton albums to get the gist.

Ancestral - Master of Fate

Power metal is usually not my thing ... too happy, predictable and monotonous. But I must say this is extremely tight and somewhat thrashy. A little heavier in spots than average PM. One of the better PM releases I've heard in quite a while.

Finally listening to the new The Chasm - A Conscious Creation... A very dynamic record, immersive and I am sure someone else may have mentioned it but it really makes you forget where you are now and pulls you into another reality.

Bleeding Gods - Dodekathlon (2018)

Had never heard of this Dutch band before. Typically slick and polished Nuclear Blast product that comes across as a thrashier Behemoth. Some cool parts here and there but songwriting not yet strong enough to keep me constantly engaged.

The first album, Dominance, is far more aggressive, while still remaining pretty technical. It's absolutely my pleasure. A band as good as them deserve far, far more recognition than they've received.

Hell of a shame about Eddie Clark.
