Isenmor - "So Willingly Deceived" from the Land of the Setting Sun EP

I love this little folky/pagan EP way more than I probably should. Memorable melodies that undoubtedly will play over and over in my head for days after this listen.

It's a shame that a lot of people only know the song 'Ace of Spades' when discussing Motörhead. You don't have to go very far to find another one of their classic tracks... literally. The very next song is one.

As great as the song is, you could start the album off with Love Me Like A Reptile and still have a classic album on your hands. Wish it was played more live.

Immortal- Damned In Black

the only flaw is that it fades out. I hate it when bands do that.

Pathogen - "Necrological Rites"

Blasting out of my speakers like it was 1992, Pathogen (PH) gives some potent heavy, doomy old-school death metal.

Anvil - Black Smoke

A few respectable songs so far, but let's just say that this won't top anyone's 2018 year-end list.

Pessimist - Ignorace

I constantly forget how great this album is. I suppose you'd call this progressive death metal, but maybe just progressive metal with death metal overtones might be more appropriate, as this album goes through many passages and ideas. Despite that, it never loses sight of what it wants to be and continues to please the listener with awesome riffs (guitar and bass), immaculate drumming showcasing his different styles, and trade-off harsh and clean vocals. Definitely well worth seeking out if you can find the album (I was lucky enough to get the CD but I absolutely forget where), and for those into some left-field but intensely interesting prog-death.

I like the frenetic vocalizations made by Mille on this track. It surely adds to the frantic attack of the music.

NP: Destroyer 666 - Call of the Wild.
I've been waiting for new D666 pretty eagerly, but I'm really not liking this. There's a solid riff there, but the vocals sound hilariously uninspired.

Mist of Misery - Shackles of Life (2017 EP) and Fields of Isolation (2017 EP)

Symphonic black double-header with lots of emphasis on simple but effective piano melodies. Too many instrumental interludes though but interested to hear a proper full length from them.

Hateform - Perpetual Cold

Awwwww yeah, that's right. I'm back up in this bitch, shamelessly plugging an album from 2013. The one that still doesn't have one review. One. Single. Goddamn. Review. AND I WILL NEVER STOP GOD ITS SO GOOD GUYS. But on the topic of this song, it probably contains approximately 18 of my favourite riffs of all time. And two of my favourite solos! I'm completely incapable of not breaking out my air guitar for the entire duration of Sanctuary in Abyss. I'm not sure anyone on this planet is up to that challenge.

The Ruins of Beverast - Exuvia (2017)

Giving this a listen as it came so high in the MA year end list and it had passed me by during the year. Enjoyed the mixture of voices, choirs, chants etc. and the tribal elements and decent production. Need to give it another listen then will probably have to buy it.

Just little memories back and started to listen these albums, and wondering why Tom kicked Bernemann and Makka.

Trenchrot - Necronomic Warfare

One of the best, modern death metal bands in the last ten years. Easily. Keeping the old-school roots alive while still sounding fresh, brutal and invigorating. Fucking stunning headbashin' stuff here, with some tasteful leads and atmospherics thrown in for good measure, without sounding contrived or forced. Brilliant!

Ancst - Moloch (2016)

Really enjoyable and eclectic mix of melodeath, post-black, crust... despite the various influences it's fairly straightforward and aggressive in a good way. Eagerly anticipating the new album in March!

Incredible atmosphere, it really feels like a shamanic ritual in a forgotten cave. I need to be in the mood for it but it's pretty amazing

"Moon" is a great song, and "The Congregation" is probably their best album. However, Leprous can be super infuriating to listen to - they sometimes put WAAAAAY too much emphasis on vocals, which, with a band of terrific musicians, annoys the living crap out of me (don't get me wrong, Einar is a good singer, but it seems like he's hogging the spotlight most of the time). The new album is rather guilty of that, although quite a few songs are still super good.

NP:
Warfect - Scavengers
Good-but-not-great death/thrash. A few really good songs, though, such as "Skin Bound".

I remember hearing Leprous for the first time last year - they were opening for Devin Townsend Project in Zagreb. His vocals blew me away. Sure, his singing may be too emphasised at times, but I don't personally see it as a problem, since I enjoy his vocals like I enjoy, for instance, ICS Vortex's or even Geddy Lee's (someone mentioned Rush in this thread - don't worry, we didn't forget those awesome Canadians!), and I heard that some people consider these guys' vocals to be somewhat annoying at times as well. But to each their own - if we all enjoyed the same things to the same degree, the world would be a pretty boring place

You nailed it with the "his singing being too emphasised" comment. I understand that this might not bother most people, I just feel that it shows in the songwriting sometimes, when his parts are prioritized over the band. Like the "ooooh oooooh" ad-libbing thing he does so often - in my opinion, it would be better if he just let the band play. But I agree with your bottom line: this is a matter of taste. I like both ICS Vortex and Geddy Lee, by the way :)

Melechesh - Sphynx

How has nobody reviewed this monster in nearly a decade? Easily their best album, the other ones either have weak production and/or don't appeal to me, but this one has that dessicated, direct attack that works well with the style.

I forgot to mention that I feel his vocals give the music more color, so to speak. Their music wouldn't be the same if they had a different singer, but I understand and respect your point :)

Now playing:

Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways (Phase One)

Interesting stuff. I'm not too familiar with PT, but I've listened to some of Wilson's solo work. Nothing outstanding, but nothing bad either - it's good.

Seasons of the Wolf - Solar Flare

God I need a new album from them. Only a few more weeks... this song is growing on me; sounded a bit rote initially but I am digging the snappy riff and awesome, aggressive vocal lines now.
