Jesus, man. I thought this would be mediocre, but it's awesome!

If this is that Italian symphonic death/black band I might check this out.... last time I heard them was their debut which was almost 20 years ago iirc. Had no idea they're still going.

NP: Rebaelliun - Bringer of War (The Last Stand) EP (2017)

No surprises we're getting more raging death metal played at warp speed. If it ain't broke don't fix it as the saying goes. Most of this just blurs past but The Last Stand track is one of their best as it adds some groove and slower sections to balance out the blitzkrieg attack.

Bell Witch - Mirror Reaper

Will need to give this another listen later on. Lots of extended quieter sections, but I love the mood established throughout the piece. Definitely overlong though...

Emperor/Enslaved - Emperor/Hordanes Land -split

One of the first bm albums I ever bought, and it has lasted. Not meaning to say Emperor is bad, but Hordanes Land truly destroys it. I was alone with my opinion back in the day compared to other metallists, though. In HL every song is better than the last, and that last one is propably my favorite bm track ever. Wondering if this cd is any of worth. Bought it around 97-98.

Judas Priest - "Turbo Lover"

Sounds more like a Billy Idol song rather than a Priest track. Definitely the weakest among Priest's '80s output but there are some enjoyable moments.

Gojira - The Shooting Star

I know Magma got some lukewarm reviews, but I really like this song. Atmospheric and very elegant.

Code Orange - Forever

Same problem as the rest of their albums. Front loaded with some heavy stuff then it just kinda meanders with weird lulls and disjointed industrial elements. Doesn't feel coherent.

Almyrkvi - Umbra

Good stuff, I need to check out more of this slower, spacey black metal.

Sólstafir - Berdreyminn

I'm genuinely surprised. Haven't really given this album a proper listen since the day it came out, but it's really good! It's sad that Gummi was forced to leave, but what can you do?

I was all about I Am King when it dropped but their schtick is feeling pretty tired now. Forever has some decent heavy stuff but their edgy mall metal vibe is downright embarrassing at this point. Nothing as memorable as "Dreams in Inertia" or "Alone in a Room". Sad to think they're likely the first modern hardcore band that a lot of metalheads are hearing right now.

Skyclad - "Sky Beneath my Feet"

Was always a Sabbat megafan but never checked these guys out. I'm digging the violin and the more atmospheric riffs, but the thrash parts feel a bit pedestrian compared to what Sneap was doing. Maybe i'll check out one of their later albums instead.

Anorexia Nervosa - Quintessence (Darkthrone Cover)

Call it blasphemous if you want, but this is a cover I hold above the original. It's just so damn theatrical.

Agreed. Take half of Forever and half of I Am King and you have a fantastic album. Though I'm more of a fan of what the band does under the Adventures moniker.

NP: Akercocke - Renaissance in Extremis
Definitely enjoy the album. Still trying to suss out where I feel this fits in their broader discography.

Circle did very little to me too. Maybe should give it a new chance.

Amorphis - Skyforger

But this is where the good is at, at least for me. Fucking awesome.

Thantifaxath - Void Masquerading As Matter

Bingo. Dissonant as fuck, but actually quite exciting and creative, mixing both atmosphere and aggression. I might have to go back for their full-length, this is seriously good black metal.

StarGazer - Hue-Man-King (from A Great Work of Ages/A Work of Great Ages)

Really atmospheric opening to this song, and hey, that's what these guys tend to do best. Marry up atmosphere thick-as-a-brick with wonderful riffing. I honesty don't know how to label these guys, calling them black/death just feels lazy. There's a ton of traditional heavy metal and thrash influence, progressive rock, 70s rock...it's obviously all their favorite shit thrown into a blender. But the focused nature of what gets poured out is unbelievable to me.

Helstar - Destroyer (from Remnants of War)

Kills. This fucking kills so hard. That slick riff they bring in towards the end when the story-arc changes, god damn. This album gets slept on compared to the two that followed but it's one of the darkest pieces of USPM ever recorded. A total masterpiece.

Aetherian - The Untamed Wilderness (2017)

Impressive debut album. Melancholic melodeath from Greece with some deep growls. Reminds me of early Dark Tranquillity mixed with Insomnium.

edit: The track Seeds of Deception may be one of my fav tracks of 2017... very anthemic and gets something stirring inside me.
