Rush - "Limelight"

Rush is simply awesome. I have to listen to them more. I have to buy more of their records.

^ Was playing that Rush album earlier. That and Permanent Waves are their creative peak I think - blending technicality and accessibility.

Threshold - Trust the Process

I think Glynn Morgan might be the best singer they've had. I never thought I'd say that after hearing the initial track they released for this.

Yeah, don't worry about non-metalness. This thread is for all music. Pink Floyd is fantastic, too!

Oh, okay then :) And yes, Pink Floyd is great! For some reason I can't get enough of them these days, my poor phone is constantly pressured into playing stuff from The Division Bell, Momentary Lapse, Dark Side and even Final Cut

That being said, gonna give good ol' "Dogs" some love as well now.

Soundgarden - King Animal

Not nearly as massive, triumphant or refreshing a comeback as say, Black Gives Way to Blue, but a) no album really is and b) it embodies all the technique and attitude made their classic stuff great and therefore it's fuckin' cool.

Nile - Unas, Slayer of the Gods

I've always wondered if Karl consciously ganked the most epic of all Candlemass riffs outright, or if he didn't realize it until after, or what happened. Not that I'm complaining, everybody should have a song with this riff in it. :metal:

I feel like I could write a masters thesis as to why "Dogs" is one of the greatest songs written in the last 100 years. I mean, I can't or won't... but that's how I feel.

NP: Converge - Trophy Scars
No Heroes gets my vote for 2nd best Converge album.

The Obsessed - Sacred

Was a bit underwhelmed when this came out but it has gradually grown on me. Great vocals and nice doomy riffs.

Black Witchery - Desecration of the Holy Kingdom

For whatever reason Black Witchery have really been doing it for me lately. The monochromatic extremism of their linear compositions really carry a pure feeling of disgust in them. With repeated listening small nuances become apparent as well, which makes for a very rewarding listening experience. This album in particular is probably my favorite from them.

Dark Tranquility - Haven
I don't know what's up with this band but I find myself unable to enjoy any of their albums other than Fiction. And it's not like Fiction is wildly different from the rest of their albums but for some reason I love that album in particular but haven't enjoyed any of their other records yet.

What about (1995) Dark Tranquillity - The Gallery? I don't like nothing more by them.

Helloween- Victim of Fate

I would give up every partial song in the Kai Hansen "medley" for this song to be played in full (and sung by Kai) live!

Hmm, surprised Character doesn't gel with you. I always found Damage Done sort of boring but other people love it. Haven is cheesy as fuck and lame, though.

Vanilla Fudge - You Keep Me Hanging On

I checked these guys out because I heard they played a key role in the genesis of metal, but I have to say I didn't find that much I could link as a big influence on proto-metal, but I did find some of the best 60's psych I've ever heard.

I'm pretty indifferent towards Character, I didn't dislike it but I wasn't super into it either. As for Haven I was halfway through the first track and I could already tell things weren't going to work out between me and that album. But I went and listened to The Gallery and ended up liking it a lot.

Sadus - A Vision of Misery

Why is this so underrated? It's easily their masterpiece, imo. Their two previous albums are monsters of extreme thrash but this album steps up their thrash game to another level. They've sacrificed all out speed for a more well rounded complex approach to their sound. The complexity and musicianship is jaw dropping.

What a great album. Does anyone remember the DVD that came with the limited edition CD where King tells the story? That was a great clip.

Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train

Man, that riff! I heard Ozzy's later '80s albums first and heard the two Rnady Rhoads albums later. So imagine how blown away I was with the guitar playing on the first two albums. Not to say that Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde pale in comparison but man, Randy Rhoads was something else!

It's hard to revert your mind back to not hearing these songs 100000's of times. But Crazy Train is incredible. The other day while walking, Mr. Crowley came on my shuffle. That's another one that I burned myself out on after hearing it SO many times in high school, but fuck, that's an fantastic metal song.

Desolate Shrine - Deliverance from the Godless Void

Long, daunting, but an okay album with a really evil guitar tone. The atmosphere works, it's just the "dark on dark" style that can get tiring very quickly. If only this were like 15-20 minutes shorter...

This is some serious depressing and dark stuff. Aaron's clean vocals sound a lot better than on the stuff that I'm used of him, too.

Arkhon Infaustus - Passing the Nekromanteion (2017)

Can't believe it's been 10 years since their last release. Great to have them back and the EP does it's job leaving me wanting more of their dense blackened death. Could have done without the throwaway 10min instrumental though.

Fucking smoldering steel riff-work. This is beautiful music. Brash and rugged and exuberant.

As legendary as that riff is, the one right after it under the verses deserves some love too. As long as it's being played properly of course (alternate double-time picking it).

Beneath - Ephemeris - Amorpheus Globe

These guys and Archspire together took my taste in a fun direction for death metal this year. While this album is brutal, it stands out with catchy grooves and riffs galore. Definitely up in my top for the year.

Witchery - I Am Legion

... meh. Some okay riffs, some good solos... just overall, this has a new Satyricon "occasionally pleasant, but completely inconsequential" vibe.

EDIT: And then the last track, "The Alchemist" came on. They throw in some speed metal and some proper shredding and the whole thing is suddenly 100x better.
